Dynex External USB Floppy Disk Drive DX-EF101 (1.44MB)

I had to replace my old defective one and I simply could not be happier. This device reads my floppies just fine. The only complaint is that it is not entirely compatible with Windows 8. It will read the discs but it cannot format or write to them. It will once in a great while, but is a chore to get it to write to the discs. It also tends to read empty discs as full. Since I've transferred all of my stuff to a flash drive, I'm simply happy to have one of these in case I ever need to read a floppy again.

I had some old floppies that had info on them that I was curious about & some I really needed. This external drive is the finest floppy drive I've ever used. It is quick & works fast & correctly read floppies that are over 10 years old. It was also relatively inexpensive.

I ordered this product because it was advertised to be compatible with WINDOWS 7. It came with an installation disc but it was not needed to load. I loaded my 'floppy disc' & my files were displayed. When I clicked on the files they FAILED to open. I tried another floppy. Same result. This product DOES NOT WORK IF YOU ARE RUNNING WINDOWS 7. This product is USELESS to me. So much for "truth in Advertising".

Not sure what to say other then the device worked as descibed. Using it on a windows 7 machine and was able to read 6 of 7 disketts. The disk were really old so I was suprised it read any of them. I would order from this vendor again.

Works like a charm. Installed plug and play on a 64bit W98 system. Used entirely satisfactorily in a 32bit Vista system. The USB cord was 14" long which might be an issue or inconvenience for some, but wasn't for me.

Enclosed documentation states it is plug and play for systems with XP and Windows 7 with no special drivers needed. In both cases message appears "You need to format the disk in Drive A before you can use it. Do you want to format it." Multiple previously recorded 1.44 MB HD floppy disks generate the same message. Whatever the cause, does not do the job it was purchased for.

It came so quickly, and I really needed it. It is a replacement for one just like it that lasted for years. It only broke because a floppy came apart in it, and I broke getting the floppy out. Durable and great!

There is more to be said. This right here is the missing information. Hi, I've been looking for something to back up those old school projects on and purchased this item..... Here's some old geekspeak for ya: There is actually a distinction these drives (and old floppy disk drives both internal and external) make between "HIGH DENSITY DISKS" and "DOUBLE DENSITY DISKS". (HD floppies vs. DD floppies). On the box at Best Buy, for example, it says that this Dynex Drive works with HD floppy disks. That is, ONLY HD (high density) floppy disks! DD "double density" disks would not read in this device..... It would be nice if the Product Information of these items and reviews of these items, (in shopping here on amazon) included whether or not these items used HD disks, DD disks, or both. I suppose DD floppies are really getting to be a thing of the past! Otherwise, this item works perfectly well and instantly on current platforms! Up to a dual intel iMac platform, once again, using ONLY High Density floppy disks. Thanks!
