TERRO Garbage Guard Trash Can Insect Killer, 1-Pack

These trash guards work great and kill flies and maggots as advertised. The main downside is the tape: one side is difficult to peel, can be easily damaged, and may loosen from the vibration when the trash hauler empties the bin (if you do manage to peel the difficult side off). To secure mine, I used two machine screws with nylon-insert wing nuts. It takes very little time and effort to drill the holes and fasten them properly, and it is worth it because the trash guards work so well. I started with a clean receptacle and used this cleaner: https://a.co/d/03vdpyXc. I sprayed it on, let it sit, and then rinsed it off with a strong jet stream. For materials, I used two #10-24 x 1" black flat-head socket-head screws (https://a.co/d/0gwEcyvm) and two 10-24-inch nylon-insert wing nuts (https://a.co/d/05aviDVH). The nylon insert it to prevent the wing nuts from loosening from vibration. I also placed small O-rings under the screw heads to help keep out moisture, though they probably were not necessary. The hole was snug, the flat head had enough surface area, and tightening everything down firmly likely would have sealed it well enough. I drilled the hole with what I believe was a 5/32” bit, though it may have been 11/64”. Start with 5/32” so the screw fits snugly and requires light pressure to install; mine threaded in, which should also help with sealing. Use the trash guard on the inside as a guide and drill outward through the top. See the pictures for reference. I tightened good and snug, if you use too much force, you may crack the trash guard, so don’t try to get it as tight as you possibly can. Finally, if the lid or other areas have wear holes, seal them if possible. I had a small hole in one corner of my lid and covered it with gaff tape on both sides. This product has been a lifesaver during the summer. With food waste in the trash, it’s very easy for flies to lay eggs, and before you know it, maggots start appearing at the bottom of the garbage can. Since our city now requires garbage cans to have closed lids, the trash essentially bakes in the heat, making the problem even worse. The TERRO Garbage Guard was incredibly easy to install. Just open the package and stick it to the inside of the trash can lid. After using it, I noticed a huge difference—I hardly see any flies around the trash anymore, and I haven’t had issues with maggots. The only suggestion I have is to replace it about every 1–2 months instead of 4 months ans andvertised especially during the hottest part of summer, to maintain the best protection. Overall, it’s a simple, effective solution that does exactly what it’s supposed to do. I highly recommend it if you’re tired of dealing with flies and maggots in your outdoor garbage can.

I have been using Terro garbage guard a couple of years. The actual product works great. It does what it is advertised to do, kill all of the flys, knats, and maggots that once infested my trash cans, Quickly. This would be 5 star review on effectiveness for sure. Had to give it a four star review solely based off of the adhesive strip. It doesn’t stick well. I had quite a few fall off into trash can and get loaded on garbage truck with trash. Product too expensive to be lost after a week or two. I purchased double sided gorilla tape and use that now. Haven’t lost one in trash since. So I recommend this product to kill the insects, but you will need to purchase a better quality double sided tape.

Here’s the thing. It works great killing flies in the garbage can. But the sticky thing they give you to mount the pod does NOT work. You can only peel off one side, so it’s only adhesive on one side. It’s defective. After losing one to the garbage truck, I devised a way to hang it with string into the can. I can remove the string and the pod on trash days. It does work. It’s just difficult to mount it.

It really works. I was skeptical. The tape is hard to remove but once you do, just stick this thing on the inside of the lid of my wheelie trash can. I always had fruit fly maggots after just a few days, even though everything is bagged & tied tightly. Not any more - this thing kills them.

We just moved into a recently renovated/flipped home. Everything was brand new and the home was clean, clean, clean! But, we had this horrible problem — flies! We couldn’t open the garage door or take out the trash or even come in the front door without flies getting in. Considering how diseased these critters are, I didn’t want them in my home. At one point I had killed 10 in a single day.. in my home! Enough was enough! We had purchased one of those rectangular zappers you see, rebranded a thousand times, for $40 on amazon and they do work great (although loud and a bit scary to handle.) Even though it was killing our active flies, the problem still persisted. My friend told me to wash out the trash can outside (the likely source of these flies) with bleach and soap water after the trash had been taken. So I did. I bleached and watched all those larvae go toodles into the soapy and bleach abyss. I thought that would be it. But, nope! Two days later, I’m taking out the trash and lift up my trash can and am met with a swarm of no less than 30 flies. 30!! Where did they come from in two days?! So, I turned to Amazon once again. I saw that Terro had a garbage guard for $7 that had decent reviews. So I figured it wouldn’t hurt. I risked it and purchased the Terro T800. It arrived the next day. When I got it, it didn’t smell like anything. It’s super tiny. I thought in NO WAY would this thing do anything. But I stuck it anyway to the garbage kid, and like another reviewer suggested, I put it by the hinge to help prevent it from being knocked out by trash. Then, I close the lid reluctantly. I was pretty sure this tiny, non electrical, non-smelly thing wasn’t going to do SQUAT. Like all the vitamin reviews on Amazon, I was pretty sure any review was made up. But, I left it alone. I came back two days later to take out more trash and was preparing my fateful demise involving 30 more flies. My hand went up to my face. I made sure to close my mouth — you know, just in case. One fly. One came out. WHAT? I look into the trash can which has been previously alive with maggots and saw none. NONE. And what I saw were a bunch of dead fly bodies. Those horrible vermin were gone. This must have what it felt like to be Dexter.. I have officially wiped out the enemy with punishable death. Two days later I return and just a moth comes out and the flies are still dead. It’s been a week and I have not had to kill a single fly in my house. It’s been a week and I have not had to suffer the annoying sound of the bzzzz behind my head as I read a book and then turn around with anger, “Where are you!” I no longer have the guts of flies smashed on my palms as I smash them against the window in my vain quest to rid them from my house. To think, months of suffering with flies and all I had to do was get this Terro Garbage Guard. It is $7 with prime and will be the best investment for you! I cannot recommend it’s enough. Thank you, Terro, for giving me my sanity back.

This thing actually works except the included tape does not hold the item well to the lid of our new trash can. I had a plastic simply human can and this thing never budged. I now have a songnomics metal can and it has failed to stay in place for long. I lost two in less than a month and that is a deterrent to buying it again.

The product isn't working as it was shown. The package seal was loose. The double side tape was missing. The flies wasn't seen for a day or two after that the product seemed disappeared for flies or may be the flies were using some kind of mask to avoid the smell. It's been over a month and not happy with the results.

Reading the previous reviews, I was a bit skeptical byuing it. But I can tell you that it works well the day I put it in. Flies are still around the bin but always ended up dying. No more maggots and bad smell. So happy. Back to buy a couple more. 100% recommend this products.
