Panasonic Playing Well.
I had a Toshiba DVD player that I purchased in 2000. It was a good machine, and it has served me well. But, it was so slow and could not play home made DVDs or CD-R or CD-RW discs so I finally decided to buy a new machine. I did not want or need blue-ray, not least because my eyesight is not that great and I did not want owt with too many bell and whistles that it was complicated to use. Amazon offers an array of players, from dirt cheap, to quite price. I went for a brand that I know, and sort of trust. I have a Panasonic TV and Technics (Panasonic), HiFi. So I chose this one. It is smaller than what it is replacing, in all directions. It is thinner, shorter and narrower, and lighter. A nice black, to match the PVR, Freesta receiver and loop amplifier that live under the black TV. It was a doddle to set up with a scart socket or I could have used the three RCA sockets. No HDMI, which was a bit of a shock, and no TOSlink for audio out, even more of a shock. Maybe it is an old model, I will have to check. Picture is alright for me. Sound is fine, it feeds through the loop amplifier so I hear the audio direct in my hearing aids. Remote is a bit on the small and cramped side and the button labels are not too clear so it is a bit fiddly. Front loading drawer for the DVD and it closes automatically if you power it down, so, bare that in mind if you end a film, open the draw and then instinctively, as I did, turn the thing off. You will have to put it on again to get the disc out. Not a bad unit. I can't complain for the price.

Decent dvd player
Bought a reasonably priced dvd player just so I have one. Tried a couple of dvds so far and very happy. Easy to set up with my sky glass and no complaints at all. Does what I wanted it to and would recommend.

Will show mp4 videos very well indeed, given a little care.
I saw the USB socket on the front and thought: "Just like my old Sony Brava TV, it will accept mp4s on a USB stick". Not true unfortunately, since only mp3s can be read with that socket (at least according to the spec). Tried it with an Attenborough commercially recorded DVD and it was OK, but we have all got used to 1024 pixels across, instead of the 625 (I think it was) on commercial DVDs. But you get used to it after a while. I have a lot of mp4 recordings made off the screen with Debut, from NCH software, which record text in 8 point in startling clarity. I wanted to see these on my TV. USB not the way to go, so what about a DVD? NCH make a converter from mp4s to "DVD-Video". It was acceptable, but lots of Lissajous patterns (think that is the jargon) with ribbed clothing and lowish resolution, but you get used to it. Then I tried Freemake to encode the DVD. The quality is almost like mp4 directly off a computer running the Microsoft Media Player, and even the 8-point text was readable with some effort. Unbelievable !. This is downloadable for free, but you get the maker's logo and a big watermark on ever page. Pay £27-50 for the "MegaPack" (I would do this from inside the program when it is running, or a search with Google etc. reveals lots of hacks to avoid paying, and I thought the cost was reasonable) and you get a key (also auto-inserted) which after a re-start of the prog, gets rid of the logo etc. I have no idea how it works, but the claimed quality goes down if you put too many mp4s on the DVD. This is looking to give Good quality at around the 3.5GByte total size. Panasonic lists all the formats that will work on the DVD- player, and one is XVid which allows various levels of compaction, so that might be the format that is output from the converter. I notice on Ebay that DVD-R disks are available about 20p. each. That was the sort I used, and I cannot comment on what happens with another standard. It takes about 70 minutes to burn a DVD with 3 Gbytes of mp4s on it. So quite a bit of work to do, but you can leave it going while you eat.

GOOD QUALITY DVD PLAYER AT A GOOD PRICE
Having bought a new TV without a scart lead, I needed to replace my DVD player. Some reviews do not do this great machine justice. It is quiet, easy to use, has a great picture quality and can't be beaten on price. The remote is easy to use and there are buttons on the machine if the remote gets mislaid. All in all a good quality DVD player at a good price. Plays my home made movies with no problem as well a commercial ones. Thanks

Good DVD Player ; Great CD copier.
I bought this to copy music CDs to USB for my car, and it does this very well ; a good choice of recording quality settings from 192 to 320 - many recommend the lowest setting as being equivalent to radio broadcast but I used 256 to get near CD quality and so far have over 100 CDs on my 32Gb stick with more than half the space remaining. DVD play quality is good (standard DVDs only, but 'upscaled' to HD) ; The on-screen menus and text display seems a bit prehistoric compared to better quality displays on many other devices - build quality is also a bit 'tinny'. P.S. when copying music it seems best to set the 'tag-id' option off ; If on, it creates all tags as 'Track 1' 'Track 2' etc. - this overrides display of the file name by the car audio ; The filenames created are always CD1/Track1 etc., but can easily be renamed on a PC or tablet (with usb connection) which is the displayed on the car display.

Good DVD Player, Capable Of Being Reprogrammed To Play Discs From Other Regions.
NOTES PANASONIC DVD-S700EB-K DVD Player ONLY plays DVDs. The Panasonic player is ONLY capable of playing region 2 DVDS, out of the box. However, it is capable of being reprogrammed to play discs from other regions - my reprogrammed player has played regions 1, 2 & 4 discs (assistance is available on the internet). The player has NO front display. Basic disc information (title, chapter & elapsed time) is displayed on the TV screen. Playing CDs maybe problematic. The player comes with an ATTACHED power cord fitted with a type G plug (UK). NO power adaptor is supplied. The player is incapable of being connected to the internet. Therefore, its capacity to play discs from other regions can't be removed by software updates. The player arrived sooner than expected and is in good condition (I was surprised by the lack of protection - only shipped in the manufacturer's carton). Thank you, Amazon (UK) for a fast dispatch and Australia Post for a speedy (final) delivery. Both the player and the remote control are (outwardly) of plastic construction. The player weights approx. 1.1kg and the remote approx. 75g (with batteries). The push buttons on the front panel (power, play & tray) have a rather premium, positive feel. I would have liked this standard (of push buttons) to have been carried over to the remote control. Unfortunately, the buttons on the remote control have a firm, mushy, positive feel (standard on budget players). The remote offers a wide angle of usage. You don't need to be directly in front of the player's sensor, for successful operation. Virtually, the player is plug and play, out of the box. Although, the player's menu can be accessed to change several settings, (eg. TV type, resolution & language) if necessary. Disc tray operation is smooth and relatively quiet (no tray droop). From placing a disc in the tray, to image on the screen, takes approx. 12 seconds. Dimensions for the player are 310mm W × 210mm D × 39mm H - smaller than "standard" sizing. Picture quality (for DVD) is remarkably good. The image is detailed, sharp, consistent, colourful with general low noise (testament to its upscale abilities). The players offers a clean, stepped, upto ×20 search function. Chapters are accessed fast and precisely. Obviously, Panasonic has "spent " the money on disc transport, circuitry design and components. An additional interesting feature, is the ability to "rip" CDs to MP3s via USB (I haven't used this function). The Panasonic DVD-S700EB-K player offers a superior viewing experiencing, amongst budget DVD players. My only concern is based around the players overall construction, and hence its longevity. Only time will tell.

Poor QA requires attention
Australia is Region 4, and the player is correctly set for that region. But the unit has been sent with a UK plug, quite unsuitable for this country. It is technically illegal for a non-certified person to change the plug. Amazon, this is not the first time issues like this have occurred in my orders [e.g. DVD's sourced from the US being that country setting, not mine.] Extremely poor QA, to say the least.

Wrong wall plug!
The Panasonic is fine and works great BUT it came from the UK so had the wrong wall plug in so I had to buy an adapter - a pretty silly error from the supplier when I am in Australia!
