Truly easy/fast installation, good quality, excellent versatility in terms of doorway sizing
We have used these gates for years (I also have an older one that doesn't have the smaller pet-door in the middle) and find them reliable and mulit-functional. Without the outer extensions, in the picture, this would be just the main center piece, without the two extensions on the sides, the "smallest" space it will fit is a narrow inner-doorway (think smaller half-bath door frame). The center piece also perfectly fits a traditional bedroom door frame (we have two of these installed on standard bedroom doors in our house). With the two extensions (included) it can fit even larger spaces (use one, or both). First-time setup may take a few minutes, just to make sure you get it right, but it really just takes a couple of minutes to install the door (I did it, 6 months pregnant). In short, there are long dowel/screws that stick into the outer edges, which brace it against the wall. Now, this is not flimsy, which was my original first-thought when I opened the first gate years ago. These are very sturdy, and really, really hold! They brace right against the wall. For your convenience, the box also contains some sticky rubbery pads that you can adhere to the wall, which should stop skid, if you have slippery walls (I don't know why you would, but I'm not one to judge...lol). Another option, and this is important for top- or bottom-of-stairs, is to screw in a permanent bracket against the wall. The instructions note that this is for safety...I imagine that the bannister the dowel presses against could give over time, which may make the gate loose. But if this is not going at the top of stairs, installation is super-easy and fast, with an easy-to-open handle. The handle is different than our older one. Its larger, but I like it better. You simply lift it up on the non-hinged side (has a stapler-like action) and it pulls back the latch. For added security, there is a red "lock" button. If you press the handle all the way down, the red spring-loaded lever will catch. This is optional- if you simply don't press the lever all the way down to snap it in, then you just raise the handle to open the gate the next time (we don't snap the lock yet, as we just have the dogs for now). Once in the "lock" position, it requires that you slide the red lock backward, then you can lift the handle as normal to open the gate. Again, not required that you "lock" it, but a nice option. The gate is white metal, works very well, super-sturdy (including the wall braces). I'm satisfied with this purchase, and wouldn't hesitate to buy this brand again!

Fabulous gate for dogs, cats and pot belly pigs
I bought this gate over 4 years ago when my youngest dog was an untrustworthy pup. The doorway to my tiled den is extra wide so I needed a gate that could accommodate that width. I also needed a gate that was walk-thru because there are some physically challenged people in my home who would have a hard time stepping over conventional gates. This gate installs easily and securely, adjusting for a perfect fit in my doorway. It comes with two extension panels and you can purchase additional ones if your doorway is wider than 44". It's tall enough that my little dachshund mix (who can sometimes fly when properly motivated) cannot jump over it, but adult humans can easily operate the latch that opens the walk-thru gate. The kitty door at the bottom of the gate had to stay closed at my house because it was perfectly sized for a wiener dog, but my cats were not interested in going into the den with the horrible little dog creature anyway so it wasn't a problem for me. Fast forward to last month. My little dog has become sufficiently trustworthy that the gate has been stored in the basement for a couple of years. However, my eldest daughter has added an indoor miniature pot belly pig to her household of 4 cats. Mookie the pig is now 7 months old and about 45 pounds. He is also an adolescent and a little more stubborn than he used to be. Last month, he decided that rooting around in the cat litter box was loads of fun and seemed to plan his day around this delightful activity. My daughter and her cats were less than thrilled since the pig was vigorously flinging litter everywhere! I remembered the gate in my basement and took it to my daughter's home. She really needs the kitty door because one of her cats is elderly and has only 3 legs so she cannot jump over a gate anymore. After installing the gate in the doorway to the laundry room where the litter box is, Mookie promptly showed us that if he maneuvered just right, he could get thru the cat door in the gate. Luckily, I saw the customer images which demonstrated using cable ties to keep the cat door from opening completely and it worked perfectly. Fortunately, Mookie has grown enough that he cannot get thru the cat door anymore no matter how hard he tries so we've dispensed with the cable ties. The gate works perfectly and my daughter no longer comes home to dirty cat litter strewn around her laundry room floor. The gate is made of powder coated steel and the white paint is extremely sturdy. My household has multiple cats and dogs and children and it still looks brand new after 4 years. The style is fairly innocuous and seems to look as good in my daughter's modern home as it did in my 100 year old house. (Let's face it - a pet gate is not an accent piece so innocuous is about as good as it gets.) If you are looking for a pet gate that will fit extra wide doorways and can be easily walked through by humans, I think this gate may be just what you're looking for.

Great Gate!
Exactly what we needed for our doorway to the basement. Easy to install and easy to operate, and so far has stayed in the doorframe very snugly despite a 6 and 9 yo slamming it open and closed. We did use a baby fridge safety latch to close the cat door to just small enough to keep our mini dachshund out but let our cats through to their litterboxes in the basement (the reason we got the gate to begin with). If you need to let cats through but keep small dogs out, you will probably need to rig the cat door to only open wide enough for a cat, but it is possible to do that if you're inclined. I like this the best of all the gates we have! Update to answer (hopefully) some recent questions: I have this gate and it is used for both our mini dachshund and our youngest child. The sticker on my gate (purchased in the last 6 months) actually says it is a pet gate, but that WHEN used for children, the pet door should be closed and latched. Obviously this renders the gate less useful for those with crawling children or even small toddlers if the pet door use is the intended goal! That being said, I would guess that the maker is interested in limiting their liability should someone let a crawling/toddling infant get lodged in the pet door while unattended. In my opinion, the risk of that if you're watching your crawling child is probably minimal (just my opinion of course-not a recommendation for anyone to use the pet door with tiny kids around). My kids are just out of their preschool years, but I think I would have used the gate anyway and been very alert to their proximity to the gate had I needed to do so when they were younger (we actually installed a regular cat door in our old house's basement door for the cats to get to their litter box, but to keep our first born out of that stairwell and the basement. She never once tried to go through the cat door, though it was the same size as the pet door on the Carlson gate.) Another precaution with children involves not installing at the top of stairs (I think most pressure mounted gates are not 100% with toddlers when mounted at the top of a stairwell/staircase). Ours is installed at the top of the basement stairs with plenty of floor space between the gate and the first step, but I would not have risked that with a very young child. On the subject of the pet door dimensions (7" wide x 10.5" tall available space), we have a 9 lb. mini dachshund who is smaller than our 4 cats so we have to rig the pet door to only open wide enough for a normal size cat to squeeze-and I do mean squeeze- through. We actually use a zip-tie type child safety lock to restrict how wide the cat door can open, it takes care of keeping our 9 lb. dog from getting to the litter box. So, long and short is I do not think that the gate was intended ONLY to be a pet gate, but the use of the pet door is advised to be restricted with small kids (again probably due to the liability if the company doesn't advise that). And as far as any difficulty opening the gate, I have found that when the gate is not mounted square in the door frame (it shifts after lots of openings/closing...stays firm but just not square), the gate latch becomes "off" and can be harder to open and close. Remounting/fixing the gate at the sides fixed the problem for us. Also, if anyone needs to know this-the pet door opens in both directions (though if you rig the pet door it stays open one way!). Okay, hopefully that answers questions people may have about the gate. :) Update 2-15-19: We have a regular span and extended span gate now and both are working well for our cats and youngest child. The extended span gate does slip over time so it needs to be re-aligned in the doorway at times but both gates have performed now for years and keep our younger kids out and our cats can get through easily. We do use baby rings to keep the pet doors open bc otherwise our younger kids would close the pet doors.

Great Gate for Big Dogs, But Sizing Caution for Clever Beagles!
This Carlson Pet Products Metal Gate is a very nice and sturdy option for keeping larger dogs out of areas that only cats are allowed. The price is good for the quality you get. It works perfectly for preventing bigger pets from accessing certain areas. However, be warned if you have a clever, medium-sized dog: my 40 lb beagle can still manage to squeeze his way through it! Overall, it's a solid purchase and I like it, but perhaps measure your determined escape artist carefully.

Outstanding walk through pet gate. So easy to install and so perfect in many ways
0This gate is brilliant. You already probably figured that out based on the plethora of 5 star reviews that preceded this one, no? I have owned just about every size and shape gate in an effort to have some (some, not a lot.... just some. I really don't ask much) control over the four leggeds that share this house. This gate enables the cats to come and go, but keeps the dogs from stealing the cat food, or worse, the cat poop (oh don't shake your head like you've never heard of anything so disgusting.... if you've got dogs you know they have a fondness for varieties of poop. Deer poop is a favorite, of course (we call it canine m&m's - melts in their mouth, not on their paws) but in a pinch they will settle for litter crispies from the cats. So at night when there is no one awake to watch them, they would be inclined to wander the house in search of litter coated bundles of joy. These gates keep them confined. Well sort of. More on that later. Remind me to tell you why its only sort of. So it keeps them confined and allows the cats to come and go through the little access door. the high points: - easy to set up - not at all bad looking for a gate - the little cat door is brilliant - stays in place and does not loosen over time (one of ours has been in its current location for three years with no need to adjust it) - extra wide option so it can fit a variety of doors - easy walk through for humans. No fumbling to get the gate open The low points.... - I wish they made a narrower version. I have a couple of very narrow doorways in the house and these just wont fit - I wish the cat gate had an option for making the opening smaller. Some cats need it the size it is but mine do not, which gets me to........ .......the thing I was going to have you remind me to tell you.... I have a 50 pound dog. She is no lightweight. With relative ease she contorts her body in a way that you wouldn't believe (I didn't believe it until I saw it for myself), and then slithers her way through the little cat gate. It is a thing of canine engineering beauty to watch her do it, but it is MADDENING. My last dog used to just climb over every doorway gate put in her way. I feel a tad defeated I must say. But, I can't hold my dog's houdini like qualities against the gate. This gate is outstanding and seriously is the best one I've ever owned. BOTTOM LINE: The best pet gate I've ever owned even though my dog can outsmart it. Most dogs simply can not.

Great gate
The size was almost too small for my needs but the extra piece that came with it for bigger spaces made it too big for the hallway. 😂 luckily I got the gate to work. I just had to tighten the screw things all the way to get it to tighten to the wall. I’m SO glad it fit. I needed a gate with a small door for my little dog. He’s 18pounds & can fit through the mini door. It seems they have made the mini door smaller because one review showed a husky that fit through but ain’t no way a husky would fit through now. They had to of made the mini door smaller since my 18pound dog barely fits through. The gate does not auto close, you have to close it. However if you tighten the gate a certain way you can make it to where you can shut the gate without having to touch the button. You can just swing the door and it will catch at the part where it locks. It’s sturdy and nice. No damage. Easy to assemble and put up. Easy to move if needed. Great for babies or dogs. Very helpful. The height is shorter than my old gate but still a good height. My German Shepard doesn’t even try going over it. I highly recommend. Great value too.

easy to assemble, easy to use. hard to read instructions (included here in common words)
We got this because our pup is easily frightened with storms and any loud noises, and he always runs to my room for safety - then in his scared state "relieves" himself back there every time. The gate comes with everything needed, except a screwdriver to secure the wall mounts (not needed for me - more later). The instructions were, well... not so clear. They were written well, but were written in an aqua color and perhaps a 2-size font. They were completely unreadable without taking photos and blowing them up to see. Graphics were provided, but again, in that aqua color they were hard to make out. Once you blow them up, they are simple, self-explanatory, and clear enough it only took about 10 minutes from start to finish. Depending on your doorway, be prepared to have to omit certain steps. I own an older mobile / modular home. For those of you that are unaware, these homes are generally made with all the same requirements as more traditional homes, but they skimp on construction a little on minor things to keep them both lighter and cheaper. Relevant to this gate, the doorways aren't as deep as traditional homes, so I can't use the secure wall cups as they don't fit on my frame. Ironically enough, the pressure mounted screws and equipped pads just barely fit on my frame. It's secure. It's safe. It's fully effective. But... the mount hangs over the edge of my door frame by about 3 mm. As the instructions said - the pressure mounts need to be adjusted to have the gate close. It was kind of fun watching it squeeze together. The release mechanism is indeed made for one hand, and reacts easily. The gate is rather narrow at 16 inches, so if you have any extra pounds you'll find yourself turning sideways to get through, but that's a small enough inconvenience. The pet door is on a spring mount, so you can open or close it as needed, but any pet small enough to get through that door will not be able to trip it open. This also means you can "unlock" the gate and have it swing freely instead of being latched. Basic instructions here : 1) put the two "L" shaped pieces together and screw together with the provided wrench. 2) position gate between the frame, line up and insert pin into hole in the exterior gate frame you did in step 1. 3) carefully line up the top of gate with the connection holes at top (it's obvious), and insert spring loaded bolt. BE SURE YOU HAVE THIS RIGHT, YOU CANNOT REMOVE THE BOLT AFTER IT'S IN. 4)Rotate the knob on the rods to separate the knob from the pad. Insert the 4 adjustment rods at the 4 corners, screw into place, but not completely. Circle / mark your doorway where these meet the wood (circle them) so you know where to put the screwed wall mounts. 5) Line up the wall mount cups and screw into place within the marked circles. SCREWDRIVER NOT PROVIDED. 6) realign the gate and twist the pressure mounts until they are secure in the cups and the gate closes.

Small door subpar
Cat door needs to stay open. Closes everything you use the door.

Working Well
We like that the gate swings in both directions. The cats loved the cat door put the dog figured out how to squeeze through. Didn't look like she should fit, so be careful with that.

The best thing ever
Genuinely can't believe these can't be bought in Australia, what a game changer! Keeps the kids out of the laundry area where the cat litter is and gives the cats a safe place to eat where they can't be terrorised by a toddler who loves them.

Brilliant product. Very easy to install and maintain
Pros: -Lightweight -Easy to install -Gaps are small between the rods, works if your puppy is not too small (<2months) Cons: -Has a limitation with installing extensions (the opening to my kitchen is a bit bigger for the gate without extensions, and small for either of them to be installed). had to tape one of the smaller extensions on the other side to cover the gap -Mechanism for opening the door is a little flimsy, so have to be careful while handling it Overall a quality product to avoid your furry friends from entering places you don't want them to
