How thick is the pole?

The pole for the Sport-Brella is approximately 1 and 1/8 inches in diameter. We just returned home from one week at the Outer Banks, and we were pleased with the quality and performance of the Sport-Brella. The "augur end" of the pole allows you to "screw" the pole into the beach sand in an easy manner and it provides for a tight fit in the sand. The "augur end" is made of durable plastic, making it great for beach sand -- don't know how well it would work on a rocky surface. The umbrella is light-weight, easy to carry, and easy to put up and take down. A great product!

How do you screw it in? Screw anchors typically have handles. Do you just twist the pole and push down? Looks difficult to get in.
