Arrived in good shape, and more quiet than expected
I was concerned about the unit getting here in decent shape, since a few recent reviewers have mentioned that it was pretty beat up on delivery, but it arrived in pristine condition, the box barely even dirty (I posted a picture in the Customer Images). It also runs much more quiet than I thought it would. I previously bought a 12 gal 125 psi Craftsman several years ago which was considerably louder and failed after one use (granted, the Craftsman is at a $160 price point, and this one is more like $300+). I plugged it in, turned it on, and it pressurized to 210 psi relatively quickly. Somewhere, someone mentioned that it needs to be broken in by running it for 15 minutes with the drain valve fully open, and indeed there is a sticker around the power plug that says to follow the break-in procedure spelled out in the manual before use; however, there is no break-in procedure in the manual. I called DeWALT, and found that the newer versions of the pump don't require break-in (mine is a rev 5, or type as they call it) - only the first revision (type 1) requires the procedure, though they still continue to install the power cords with the sticker attached. Also, in this rev, the drain valve is more of a quarter-turn stopcock - it's not super convenient to get to, but this style of valve is at least easy to actuate and you only need to use it once a day, so it's really not that big of a deal. I know I just got it, but I really like the unit, so I'll give it 5 stars, but I'll update this if anything funny happens in long-term use. Update 08/17/2020: Almost 8 years in and it's still going strong with occasional use, though I've forgotten to depressurize it more times than I'm willing to admit. I'm updating this since one part just broke, however - the compressor was clearly leaking from somewhere, and when I removed the cover, it was pretty obvious that it was coming from the pressure switch. Thankfully, it's a pretty cheap and easily replaced part. I bought the replacement part from toolservicenet (P/N N003990) and a little over twenty dollars later including shipping I was back in business!

VERY BAD JOB OF PACKING, lots of damage
After having read the very mixed reviews, I ordered this one anyway. It was delivered promptly, but the box it came in looked like it had gone through a tornado. Ripped and torn, crushed, and obviously damaged. My secretary accepted delivery. Upon opening, I discovered no owners manual, in addition to SMASHED back legs. The fact that it had been dropped from some height was obvious. The needle in the pressure gauge had been "bounced" so hard that it was resting on the wrong side of the zero peg, and consequently would not move with an increase in air pressure. I had to drill a hole in the plastic face of the gauge to "fish" the needle over the peg to the correct side using a very small wire. Straightening out the legs was another matter. With the aid of a hammer and giant crescent wrench I got the legs back into an acceptable position, although it still rocks a little. Doing so however caused quite a bit of scuffing and paint loss. I considered returning the Item, but now minus one acceptable box, I figured it just wasn't the hassle. It did pump up to 200 lbs. once I got it repaired. Now, we'll see if it lasts.. If it makes it a year, I will change the rating to 3 stars. The only reason I bought this one is because of the 15 gal tank and the 200 psi to maintain my skidsteer tires. I expect this machine to have only sporadic use. So.... we'll see Bruce Marron, Fort Morgan, Co.

Solid, Heavily built
Arrived as described in perfect condition. Absolutely no damage or other issue with packaging. This Dewalt compressor was delivered on an Amazon freight truck and the driver walked it down a 100 yard, inaccessible driveway on a furniture dolly to my custom furniture/cabinet shop. This is a heavily built tool with quality components that I expect to give me many years of service in a commercial, one-off furniture/cabinet shop. The compact nature, high tank pressure @ 225 psi vs. 150 psi working pressure at an acceptable output (5 CFM @90 PSI,) makes this a good compressor for HVLP/LVLP all finishing application. The 70 decibel sound level is far below any other compressor I have ever owned. My application will mount it permanently in the finishing room, but it is very portable and can be used with a 12 gauge extension cord.

Not very dependable andHard to get repairs if purchased from Amazon
Less than 3 months after purchase the regulator failed and started blowing out air out of the adjustment handle under extreme pressure. This occurred in the middle of the night sometime and when I walked outside I heard the compressor just running to try to keep up to the leak. The Regulator is $100 which is more than a fourth of the cost of the compressor. It is supposed to be under warrantee, but all local DeWalt dealers answer. “If you bought it from Amazon we don’t fix it.” Looks like the closes repair facility that “Might” fix it is about 100 miles away and reading the documents that came with it I don’t expect that they will just send me the part. I will check with them when they are open.

DeWalt made a great shop product and then didn't think enough of it to protect it during shipment.
The delivery was made in a timely fashion and the compressor itself seemed to be exactly what I wanted for my needs. It had the right size capacity and portability to take care of my needs. I am replacing an older 40 gal. compressor which has served me well for many years, but finally gave up the ghost. I read the reviews that warned that a number of these compressors were delivered with damage. I rolled the dice and sure enough it came with the leg or stand all bent from a severe blow or drop. The shroud was shattered, and the air filter was broken off as well as most of the hardware was missing. The box looked as if it had been taped back together multiple times during its journey and was quite misshapen from what you would expect. There was lots of tape holding it together. The packaging material inside the box was badly crushed and some was even missing all together. It was very disappointing to see that DeWalt did such a poor job of packaging a heavy piece of equipment like this. I tried to get them to send replacements for the broken or missing parts, but that was not an option. The only option that was offered was to return it for a refund. Amazon offered no other option but to accept delivery and pay for the repairs myself. DeWalt said that they couldn't do anything because it was not beyond the 90-day threshold of responsibility. The compressor is now sitting in my shop waiting for a return pickup, and I am waiting for a refund which may not come for 3 to 4 weeks. Worst of all, I am still without a working shop compressor.

On the Air
Now I have air again. My old, very old, compressor bit the dust so I had to get a new one. I agonized over what one to get and am glad I decided to get this one. The D55168 has a larger capacity tank than my old one and it is way quieter, not silent but noticeably less annoying more than volume it is more of a low rumble than a high pitched fingernails on a blackboard annoying sound as my old one. The fact that it pumps up to 200 pounds is a plus. The few things I really don't like about it are as follows: The tank drain is on the very bottom, like on the floor side under the tank the only way to access it it to lay the whole compressor down. This may not be an issue to folks younger than I without a bum back and knees. Thee is only ONE air outlet, my old compressor had two and I am spoiled I had one port to hook up to my machines and one free to use for blowing stuff or during nice weather I ran one line out the window so I could work out on the patio and in the shop without switching connections, real handy. I fixed this by adding a brass multi-port block, sure it works but now something else to get tangled up in in my crowded shop. Not deal killers for sure but just my gripes, and that ain't much this machine if it holds up as long as my old one is a good buy and a nice unit. Going on two months use and I can at this point recommend this unit, I think they mostly are the same, you either get a good one and are happy or if it sucks instead of blowing you can be irate. Good Luck....

not worth the headache x 2!
not worth the headache x 2! perhaps shipped on a pallet to your local hardware store this compressor may survive the trip, but shipped to your front door in the box dewalt provides its very unlikely to arrive unscathed. the weight of the whole unit slams down on the steel frame that holds the plastic wheels bending the frame, splaying the wheels outward, breaking the welds and cracking the powdercoat. if that wasn't enough damage, the drain valve on the bottom of the tank (which I could only guess already sits very close to the ground) comes down and pierces the cardboard like a medieval knight that showed up to a sword fight in suit of armor made from aluminum foil. now the bottom of the tank is missing paint entirely. the valve is not only broken but is now supporting the entire weight of the unit. i'm sure like all other dewalt products I own, this compressor is probably a great product (I won't know until I put my hands on a 3rd unit from a store or amazon decides from now on to have them shipped in a huge balls of spray foam). unfortunately leaving this item under the care of the men in little brown uniforms was not a wise choice. fool me once, shame on you. fool me twice....ughhhh!

Great compressor, large tank
Admittedly, this compressor is a bit large if you're just going to top off the tires on the car or air up a basketball. The large tank means it takes a considerable amount of time before it reaches full capacity (and it cuts out around 200 psi, not 120). So if you do a lot of small tasks like that, this is still a great compressor to have on hand but you'll want to add a small pancake compressor or something similar to your lineup. I haven't use it for heavy use like air sanders and grinders. But I can tell you for the simple air tasks it takes a long time to deplete this tank. It seems to be of high quality construction. It has one (regulated) output with a universal coupler. It has a drain on the bottom which seems to work very well (it leaves a tiny pile of frost on the garage floor when its done draining). Make no mistake, it is loud. But it is not as loud as the woosh of air when blowing things off with an air gun etc. With the garage door shut, you can tell something is running inside the garage but it is not at all loud or offensive outside. Inside it is fine, I just tend to stand on the other side of the room.

I figure it not the case but came built like that. Mine work fine without any leaks an ...
came with a birth defect I mean the pole assembly for the bumper caoutchouc feet was soldered in crooked ( in th jig ) position so you have to add spacer to make it at nivell As many people mention it happens in transport. I figure it not the case but came built like that. Mine work fine without any leaks an as other mention the air regulator look not very accurate but easy to replace at a later date. For the price I paid It is very very good and make it the only one in this class to worth the money.

Works Well - Noisy, Sounding Like it is Falling Apart
First one delivered by Amazon was dropped by the crew off the truck. Bent the wheels, chipped paint, did other damage. While documenting, discovered it was also used as it was partially assembled and box had clearly been re-taped (advertised as new). Amazon wanted me to pay to ship it back. I got a "little" frustrated by this and after talking with two different people and noting that it was supplied and shipped by Amazon and that I captured the incident on my Ring doorbell, they finally refunded me (didn't want it back). Eventually got a replacement and it works well. It is noisy when running and the sounds it makes are a little disconcerting (sounds like loose parts in the motor) but I think its just a particularly rough sounding oil-less motor. Pretty happy overall.

Not good in the long run
It ran well for the first year or so but then threw a piston by year two....too much money for something that won't last....and I don't use it that much which is disappointing. I bought because I believed dewalt was a dependable brand.....I was proven wrong.
