Pilgrim’s Progress (Bunyan): Updated, Modern English. More than 100 Illustrations. Parts 1 & 2 (Christiana's Journey)

Bunyan successfully gave a faithful account of a Christian’s journey. Many, if not all, of Christian’s encounters were highly relatable. The highest strength of this book (and what I loved the most about it) is its deep roots in the Scriptures. I do not exaggerate when I say there’s a corresponding bible verse for every other sentence in Pilgrim’s Progress. I was profoundly impressed by Bunyan’s extensive knowledge of Scriptures and his ability to infuse it throughout his book. Charles Spurgeon even called Bunyan a living Bible and said, “Read anything of his [Bunyan’s], and you will see that it is almost like reading the Bible itself. He had read it till his very soul was saturated with Scripture…prick him anywhere; his blood is Bibline; the very essence of the Bible flows from him. He cannot speak without quoting a text, for his very soul is full of the Word of God.” Not only is Pilgrim’s Progress filled with Scriptures, but it is also faithful to it. It gives a clear and accurate presentation of the Gospel of Christ, not a watered version popular in the evangelical world today. I also enjoyed the biblical lessons in every stage of the book. Even when Christian encountered troubles I hadn’t, I learned a few things that will help recognize the enemy's trap. And I also enjoyed the poetry/song Christian recited at the end of every trial. On the flip side, I found the book a bit difficult to read. I can easily spend hours reading a book, but for some reason, I couldn’t read more than a chapter per day with this one. Perhaps it is because of the different writing style or because it was written a long time ago. Whatever the case, it was not a can’t-put-it-down book for me. But it's probably for the best, as it allowed me to digest the material slowly. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book. It made me reflect on my faith journey and examine myself. It also provided me with valuable resources to keep me on the true path of righteousness. For instance, Christian’s sole focus on God convicted me and made me realize I let myself get too distracted by worldly things instead of fixing my eyes on Christ. Also, the sufficiency of Scripture for all of Christian’s troubles inspired me. And I was enormously encouraged by how Christian and his fellow resisted a specific obstacle and the means they used to overcome it. My recommendation Pilgrim’s Progress is for the everyday Christian, as it depicts general things all believers can expect from the moment we have been regenerated to when we die and go to heaven. Therefore, I recommend all Christians to read it! Especially new believers. The book is so theologically rich that I cannot imagine any Christian reading it without learning something that will grow them in their faith. Non-Christians should also read it because it is an excellent introduction to the Christian life. However, as it doesn’t have much apologetics, non-believers who are skeptical but warm towards Christianity might benefit from it.

This is a book that I have wanted to read for forever, but for whatever reason I just never got to it. This is a wonderfully enlightening story that captured me from the first page. I actually found myself smiling, and sometimes frowning, as I read of Christian’s travels and pitfalls. I marveled first at the cast of characters: Pliable, who turns back as the Slough of Despond, and Ignorance, who believes that he is a true believer, to Formalist and Hypocrisy, Mister Money-Love and Lord Hate-Good and then there is of course there is the Vanity Fair, the Valley of Humiliation, the River of the Water of Life and oh so many more. Each character Christian encounters represents and so accurate depicts what we see all around us, and sometimes in ourselves. But just as Christian is nearly destroyed and killed, he prevails and enters the Celestial City. An example for us all that we too, can prevail. This edition is filled with over 100 original illustrations as well as the bible verse references are added directly into the text that helps to tie the verse and this wonderful message together and bring it to life. I appreciate that this edition is “tweaked just enough” to make it readable today, for both young and old. I am sorry that I waited so long to read this book. It is a timeless classic that should be on everyone’s reading list. I've had the classic original version for many years. My husband wanted the updated version with modern English. This is marvelous. It's a beautiful book from cover to cover. This allegory of salvation is priceless. It's the journey we all must take if we are to have an eternal home with the Lord. After the Holy Bible, this is the most popular and most-read book in history. A must-read for ALL!

A good book that fills a place in my library and the shipping/handling was great as was the interior of the book.

I have loved the story of Pilgrim's Progress since I was a child. Not to give away anything of the plot, twists or turns and spoil the book for anyone who has not had the chance to enjoy reading the book for themselves yet, Pilgrim's Progress in simplest terms is an allegory (a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one) of the spiritual journey Christian goes on as he makes a decision to follow Jesus Christ. Pilgrim's Progress was written and published in the 1670's and if you read the book in it's original language it can be challenging at times with understanding Old English. I appreciated having the language of the book updated to make the book more accessible to this century. I was slightly perplexed though by the choice of Bible translations. I had never before heard of the Jubilee Bible but it is written in a similar style of the King James Bible putting its language form and style similar to Old English. There are so many other good translations that they could have chosen with updated Modern English but failed to do so. If you are going to update a book to Modern English, it needs to be done consistently throughout and include all the Scripture quoted throughout the book. The Scripture (Bible) is key to the telling of the story and to keep it in a style of English (Old 1600-1700's) that is difficult for most to understand today is a huge fault on the part of those who updated the book. If you are wanting to read Pilgrim's Progress that has been updated in it's entirety, this is not the one for you. I would recommend looking for a young adult copy of the book that would more apt to have its entire language update throughout. However, all the Bible references are provided and you could look them up in a more modern translation as you read the book if you needed some clarification on what the Bible verses are saying throughout the book. Even with this fault, this is a book that I highly recommend for everyone to read. It is one that I have on my bookshelf, on my kindle and on DVD and one I will not be selling or donating to make room something else.

Great book to read

I purchased this book because I've heard so much about the title author etc... very good insightful read.

Truly a classic, a religious allegory of a man's pilgrimage through life from his "City of Destruction" to the Celestial City; and his encounters, challenges and struggles with evils and religious apostates who have lost their way and attempt to dissuade "Christian" from his pilgrimage to the Celestial City; parables to teach us, the readers, the consequences should we stray from the true path of light. But all is not doom and gloom for along the way, Christian meets up with a number of true followers of Christ including Faithful, Hopeful, Great Heart and countless others who protect Christian and ensure his arrival to Zion. Upon his arrival, the book then continues with this wife and children who make the same pilgrimage to the Celestial City, meeting up with some of the same struggles that her husband met along the way. Originally written in 1678, the book does take some time to get accustomed to the style but after a few chapters, it moves along nicely albeit for the second half being somewhat duplicative as Christian's wife Christiana embarks on the same pilgrimage as her husband but with a new cast of pilgrims accompanying her on her journey. Laced within the text are Bible verses as well, recitations of scripture that mirror the characters' experiences along their pilgrimages. Plus fabulous illustrations of the main characters and scenes of their battles, friends, moments of glory, etc.Valuable lessons designed to keep us on the true path of righteousness!

An awesome book for people interested in historical Christian characters and their blessed stories. If you would like to understand how to walk by the narrow path towards heaven, that book is a must-read.

I actually read much of Pilgrims Progress while walking on pilgrimage from St Jean & Porto, back to Santiago. Any book that encourages good behaviour is a must read.

Enigma or miracle, I fail to say, but I feel the soul shaking time of reading this book. Though a retired professor of English, I got a chance to read this book, and that, too, very surprisingly after my holy pilgrimage to the world famous Maha Kumbha Mela'25 at Prayaagraj in India. The reading, therefore, gave me a practical feeling with an empathic association with Christian, the Pilgrim. An enthralling reading, indeed, because of the lucid, crystal, and straightforward narration of the book and of my reading timing without my deliberate choice of the book, like my involuntary choice of the pilgrimage. The reading will go down my memory lane for an infinite time.
