Chums 5mm Universal Fit Rope Eyewear Retainer

Works well for large sunglasses with thick earpieces
I purchased this eyewear retainer in the 5mm size to hold my sunglasses in place for going to a water park. My sunglasses have earpieces which are much larger than usual because they are the type that fit over prescription lenses . There is a rubber, tube-like piece at each end of this rope that you push onto the earpiece of your glasses. It stretches to fit in order to go on, and then retracts snugly, hugging the earpiece firmly. It fit perfectly on my sunglasses. I bought this rope in the red color, which is an attractive, bright red. These eyewear ropes have a bead that allows you to tighten the rope so it holds the glasses firmly to your head, leaving a looping tail behind it. A nice benefit for my sunglasses is that I can loosen that bead and allow the rope to become a means to carry my sunglasses around my neck to keep them from being misplaced. This is a really handy feature!I did not go in a high wind or play heavy sports with these ropes, but they kept my sunglasses in place even with a lot of water splashing hard in my face while on a water slide, or being dunked into water at the foot of a water slide at the water park.By the way, I have delicate-framed glasses with thin earpieces. I also purchased the Chums 3mm Universal Fit Rope Eyewear Retainer to use for them. I am happy to report that the 3mm rope works very well for them. I bought this 3mm rope in navy. As advertised, it is a blue so dark, it is almost black.

*They Aren't Universal!
They're listed as being "Universal" but the small rubber grips that hold the ear pieces on are very tiny and seem made for glasses with tiny earpiece ends. I bought them to use on a pair of classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers and they won't stretch wide enough to grip. The cord itself looks durable but it shouldn't be headlined as a "Universal" product then say "Fits most glasses" as a loophole. If the end tips/arms of your glasses are wide this isn't the product you're looking for unfortunately.

Seller review
I ordered the ‘multi color’ chum. I received a dark green one. When I contacted the seller to receive the appropriate color I was told.“Your order shows that you ordered the "multicolored" item which means assorted”. I guess we use a different dictionary. I will keep the product, which seems well made. But, will not order from this seller again.

Save your money
Save your money. I love the other Chums cotton retainers, but they get kind of dirty and nasty, and can stick to your neck in hot weather. You can clean them and get maybe a year out of them. So, I tried these nylon ones. Loved them for the 3 months that they lasted. The rubber tip only grabs your glasses by about a quarter inch, and it wore out as of yesterday and my glasses hit the floor. Now, the rubber is deformed and won't stay on the glasses. I tried cleaning the inside of the Chums, and the earpieces on my glasses with warm soapy water to get rid of any oils, but they won't stay on. I'm still a big fan of Chums, just not these particular nylon ones.

Perfect for my Needs.
These are new additional Cord retainer. Have had a pair for years, still look good and hold my glasses securely all day and evening. Long enough to hang low on my chest, out of the way until I need my readers. Grip system stays tight and is easy to take on and off. These are additional so I don't have to share my old ones with my new glasses. They are rugged and have held up extremely well after years of everyday rough use.Highly recommend.

Good Sunglass Holder, Quality for the Price
Good product. The quality of this product is well worth the price. Safety glass holders safe my sunglasses from destruction. I live in Arizona and I am putting them on and off constantly. I use these and cheaper cloth holders. Both Rope Sunglass types have there advantages. The Chum Rope is solid secure and better quality. The cheaper cloth rope holders, are cheap enough to replace all the time. If I was traveling overseas I would take the CHUM and a cheaper one as a backup. I would also use the CHUM for super expensive or important glasses (they are more secure). I give the CHUM 4 stars, because I lean towards the cheaper, fast replace type.

Good looking, Works Great
UPDATE: almost 2 years later (1 year, 11 months)The Chums are still working out very well. The rubber attachment pieces haven't worn through. On the one day that I decide to go without them is the day that I lose my Suncloud Mayors. I think I left them at a restaurant. Anyway, I replaced my Sunclouds with a pair of Smith Bauhaus sunglasses. The Chums do very well holding my new sunglasses just as well as they did with the Sunclouds. The Chums never let go of the sunglasses. I primarily use the Chums to stop me from putting my sunglasses down somewhere and losing them. They work perfect for this. The Chums don't get in the way when I'm wearing my sunglasses so I never know they are there until I take my sunglasses off my face and let them hang down over my chest. I like this version of Chums because the rope hangs down my neck and back when I'm wearing my sunglasses on my face rather than sticking straight out into the air and I also like the fact that this version looks a bit more classy but can still fit into a hiking environment. I highly recommend these Chums.----original review below---So far, so good. I keep them attached to my Sunclouds. I'll update later on wear and tear.

Repeat buyer
This retainer fits my reading glasses which I can hang around my neck. Eventually the holding area enlarges and is harder to keep the glasses in, so I then use the retainer with my sunglasses which have larger ends. These retainer ends only slip over the ends of your glasses, other styles slip way over the frame next to your temple.Do not use these if you do extreme sports as these will get yanked off and you may lose your glasses. If your glasses ends are larger, this retainer does have other sizes, this is the small size.

Grips well, but not the right material for me
This did the job as promised—they held my glasses in place. But. I bought them to replace glass holders that were completely useless because my reading glasses kept slipping out of them, so these were initially a vast improvement. But the cord is stiff and didn't suit my purposes because it didn't feel comfortable behind my ears. Especially as I often wear earphones several hours each day to listen to audiobooks, and the earphones pressed the cord against my skull and was really irritating. I replaced these with the cotton model and am much happier. Same strong grip, but soft material.

Uncomfortable & Poor Design
I bought this to replace my old, stretched strap. The Chums was uncomfortable and pushed my glasses around when I turned my head. The rubber ends are not manufactured in one piece because there is a seam, which forms the two pieces as one. The rubber ends only gripped the tips of my glasses arms, which did not seem secure enough. The tail end piece is too long as well.I needed something to hold my glasses snugly (as well as being comfortable) while at work. This Chums glasses strap is one of my worst Amazon purchases.

Chums 5mm Universal Fit Rope Eyewear Retainer, Navy
Nice retainer. The ends seem a little small, and only grab the last 1 cm of the eyeglass leg. The silicone seems strong enough, but time will tell how they hold on. I have these on my driving RayBan Clubmasters. The lanyard style is a little more dressy looking than the full on cloth retainers. All in all, these are secure and look good.

Bit too small in length to be practical
This strap doesn’t look to bad, but it’s too small — if you have a ponytail or even just curlier hair (like I do) it’s a pain to get on and off your head. If you have short hair and a small skull then this probably won’t be an issue! The other Chums strap (fabric style) is far better, so I recommend that one!
