I'm a beginner, would this be suitable for me?

Good for beginners and/or amateurs nothing beyond that. I must say though that you can get very good shots, almost professional quality.

Can you replace the batteries with alkaline AA batteries if the rechargeable battery goes down?

No. The standard battery is a 3.7 v Lithium ion battery pack (a flat battery) and not interchangeable with AA. My experience shows that the standard battery that comes with the camera goes a long time before needing charge. I did buy 2 extra batteries (a little higher capacity) with charger (both ac & dc) for about $20. I also bought a camera bag that holds everything. All through Amazon.

I have this camera and the battery "meter" is always at 100% until a screen pops up "Battery Depleted." What can I do about this?

Same problem - I ended up buying a second battery and a wall charger, so I always have a charged battery on hand and a way to charge the depleted one. Somewhat disappointing. I was excited to find a "bridge" camera that was fairly easy to understand and takes quality photographs, so I've chosen to live with the battery problem rather than try to return it.

Is it possible to manually adjust the focus?

Yes it is possible but manual focus is not available in all modes. Also, you don't get a split zoom or anything to help with the focus mechanics. Since you're using just a 3" LCD for the viewfinder, in-focus and out of focus is not always clear. Also difficult to do a fine adjustment on the focus, there's no vernier and each time you change the focus it seems to have a certain minimum amount of adjustment.
