This is very heavy so probably not something a hiker would want to carry, but this lantern is great for camping or power outages. It illuminates a large area. Because it's heavy it is not easy to knock over by wind or humans. The casing is very sturdy. This is our second one, decided to get another to use with our first one which we have had over a decade. The battery lasts a very long time.

This is just an amazing product which you have to see to believe. It is a very bright, sturdy, well designed, battery powered lantern that is powered by three D cell batteries and lasts an incredible amount of time. We had a blackout due to hurricane Irma which lasted several days. Fortunately, I had this lantern and it delivered an incredible amount of light for several days on the same set of batteries. I have a large kitchen and this light lit it up completely to the point where my neighbors staying with me were amazed. If I sound too effusive it's because I really appreciated being able to sit in a brightly lit room which diminished that gloomy, helpless feeling you get when after a disaster you are stuck in near darkness for days. I have tried candles, flashlights and lower powered lanterns and none came close to the brightness of this one. After dinner, I turned down the brightness to it's lowest setting (which is still pretty bright) and placed it in the bathroom so people could have enough light to walk down the hall and find it without stumbling in the dark. After three days, it was still shining brightly on the same set of batteries. I highly recommend it for those rare times when you find yourself without electricity and have to deal with the pervasive darkness that envelopes your house. It's list price from Rayovac was $29.95 and that's what I paid for it on Amazon prior to the hurricane. I would also recommend that you buy at least a dozen D cells to keep on hand just in case. I have found the Amazon Basics to be a good value FYI.I now have several of these lanterns so I can light several rooms.

Perfect blackout lantern. I bought one of these from Home Depot about 12 years ago. It is still going strong. I liked it so much over the years that I went to buy another one a few months ago. Home Depot didn’t sell it anymore; no local store sold this device. I checked Amazon, and thankfully they still sell it, so I ordered one. It uses 3 D cell batteries. You have three options for light output: high, medeium, and low. High can light up a room almost as well as an over-head light can, but only for a few hours. Medium, which I think is the best setting in an emergency, will provide enough light to a 12 x 12 room to easily provide enough illumination to avoid any trip hazards in the middle of the night and it will last around 24 hours. The low setting puts out the light equivalent to one of this night lights you plug into your child’s wall to help them sleep, and that setting will last for about a week of continuous run time. A few weeks ago, we had a city-wide blackout from storms. Lasted about three days. I live in a two story house, so each night I would leave this lantern on medium at the top of the stairs. It would illuminate the entire staircase and family members could safely traverse the stairs without stumbling or falling. It totally eliminates needing to use t-light candles like we used when I was a kid. Safety is paramount. I only used one set of batteries.

My first reaction...this lamp feels like a brick. It was heavier than expected. That's not a complaint, just an observation. It also lights up a room at night. I mean, really lights up a room. It turned out to be brighter than expected. Fortunately, you can control the amount of light generated by pressing the power button a few times. This lamp has three power levels - high, medium, and low. The power levels affect battery lifespan - with roughly 40hrs on high and over 250hrs on low. (that's not a typo. almost 10 days of light on low-power!) This lamp has a hook on the bottom of the unit so you can hang it. I keep coming back to this lamp feeling like a brick. It is built tough. The box claims you can drop it from up to 15ft and it will still work. No, I haven't tried that. It's also waterproof up to 1m deep. You can literally throw this lamp in a pool and it will resist water for up to 30mins. I haven't tried that either. It takes 3 D Cell batteries - which come included with the lamp. Make sure you remove the plastic insert in the battery compartment! Rayovac calls this lamp the "Workhorse Pro" and it lives up to the name. It's a beast of a lamp.

Nice bright light to carry around during power failures. I have two for this reason. Three brightness settings saves batteries when you need just enough light to see where you are going or complete a task. I'd give them 5 stars if the light were warm white instead of the harsh daylight.

Here in Northern Calif., we had numerous power outages last October. This lantern is my second one purchased. Between the two of them, I had all the light necessary to fix meals and all tasks in any room after dark. They are very bright light and solid, rugged construction. They would be great for any camping or other outdoor use. There are three settings for brightness so you can dim it down when desired. The handle on top can be used to carry or move the lantern. There is also a hook which is folded under the base for use if you need to hang it up somewhere. I bought my first one at a local hardware store, and went back for a second one and they were sold out. So I searched online and Amazon was where I found this wonderful handy and hardy lantern!

Excellent product. Works great and worth the price

This is my second Rayovac Indestructible lantern. The first was given to someone in need of emergency lighting, they still have it and I wanted another. I have owned several Rayovac Indestructible lights and they are great! This lantern is heavy, solid, and bright. As an emergency house light, it's fantastic. Unlike a gas lantern you don't have to be careful with it, super easy operation, and there is no gas smell. While there are a hundred different flashlights for every occasion, this is the one battery operated light you want for when the power goes out. It's inexpensive, built to last, and has a long runtime off a single set of batteries. Can't recommend it highly enough.
