RØDE VXLR Mini-jack to XLR Adaptor

I picked up the RØDE VXLR to use with my camera setup and it’s been a dependable little tool. It securely connects my mini-jack microphones to XLR gear with no hiss or noise — exactly what I was hoping for. As other users have noted, it “seats securely both with the XLR and 3.5 mm interfaces” I especially like that the connection stays firm — no looseness or signal drop during filming. For anything audio-related where you need to bridge between mini-jack to XLR (especially in video rigs), it’s a smart, compact adapter that punches above its weight. If I were to suggest a slight improvement, a locking mechanism (if it doesn’t already have one) would make it even better — but as is, it’s solid and reliable.

The RØDE Mini-Jack Female to XLR Male Adapter is a fantastic little tool! It’s perfect for converting my 3.5mm mic input to a 3-pin XLR, making it ideal for connecting my VideoMic to professional audio equipment. The build quality is solid, and it feels durable despite being lightweight at just **48 grams**. The compact size (**58mm x 19mm**) makes it easy to carry in my gear bag. It’s reliable and works flawlessly—a must-have for audio enthusiasts!

I use this on occasion to connect a wireless microphone to my audio interface, which is connected to my MacBook Pro. I've used it in the past with the Rode Wireless Go II and currently the Hollyland Lark M2 and it works without any problems. I'm not a pro audio person, so I don't know about noise floors and so forth, but if you're just looking for an easy way to connect a microphone that has a TRS connection to an audio interface that needs an XLR input, this works great for that.

This works well, but has mechanical problems. I have yet to find a simple adapter like this that performs electrically this well - most others have ground loop problems, poor shielding, or are simply unable to loop through phantom voltages properly. It is a shame Rode went cheap on the connector mechanics, this is otherwise a VERY nicely made, compact product that interfaces with mic systems that may or may not need phantom power. All issues seem to be due to a loose 3.5mm input jack connection. If I keep the mic/cable steady on a table, it always worked well but with almost any movement, I had some kind of noise. What is very nice is the ability for the adapter to interface with a mic that had its own internal battery or when I had mics that needed the phantom voltage via my recorder. Unfortunately, the mechanics need improvement for 100% reliability. I connected this to my Tascam DR40 recorder and used 4 different mono mics - 1 JK lapel mic, 1 AT lapel mic, 1 AT shotgun, 1 old PC dynamic mic from an older HP computer. All of them had noisy electrical connection from the 3.5mm plug to the adapter. I could rotate or tug on the plug and would constantly get static, much more than seemed reasonable. I could plug these same mics into my Sony RX10ii camera directly, or through a mono-stereo adapter and NEVER had any connection issues direct to my camera. It appears there is not enough contact area on one of the ring terminals inside the adapter.

Despite being advertised as TRS compatible to convert a 3.5mm TRS to XLR, this adapter didn't work with my Boya BY-MM1+. Yes, I tested both the cables TRS to TRRS and TRRS to TRRSS that came with the microphone, and all is working fine, except when I introduce the Rode Mini-Jack Female to XLR Male Adapter adapter into the signal chain. Update: After connecting Rode support, it turns out that this adapter, by design, doesn't provide power-in for microphones that require it (like the case of Boya BY-MM1+). I miss this spec of the adapter and now I'm providing 5/5 starts since the construction is solid and sound quality is noiseless.

I'm a HUGE fan of the Rode Wireless Go II systems. I've got a couple of the Wireless Go II and just got the Pro version. I think what they have built is amazing for smaller production crews and they have been rock solid. The only "issue" I've had is trying to integrate them into other production gear, specifically a full sound board. I do some livestream work and often use the Rode Go mics on the talent. However, getting a clean signal into the sound board was always a challenge. These little adapters make quick work of doing that! You can now patch directly into a sound board without combining a weird mix of adapters that look like something out of an old Frankenstein movie (and still probably wouldn't work)! I know they are a little pricey but the fact that they are designed by Rode to work specifically with their products gives me peace of mind. And if it saves the stress of one bad audio problem then it is worth EVERY penny!

I purchased this specifically to use with a Rode Video Mic Pro...so that I could get it off the camera, closer to my subject and be able to use a "real" mic cable. And for that it's perfect. There's no reason why it couldn't work with just about any other 3.5mm BALANCED mono TRS plug. And therein lies some of the confusion that seems prevalent in some of these reviews. Yes, it clearly states that this will adapt a MONO plug into an XLR out. And it does...BUT...it's designed for a BALANCED mono plug. (TRS or Tip, Ring, Sleeve and not an UNBALANCED TS mono.) BALANCED audio uses THREE conductors for MONO...in the form of TRS or XLR. Running balanced audio cables is generally better, especially for longer cable runs... Which is where this shines. It allows one to adapt their balanced MONO plug into a balanced MONO XLR...gaining the benefits of those cables (less noise & interference and generally more robust/durable).
