very nice shiny brass compass
I got this for my husband because he has a major pocket watch collection. I have just about run out of watches I can find that are affordable that I have not already got for him over the past ten plus years. I saw this and thought it was pretty, it was very inexpensive and that always helps. I thought closed it looked a lot like a pocket watch, when he gets it he will at first assumed that is what it is. I was right when he first pulled it out of the box I put it in he started to say thanks for the pocket watch and when he opened it he fell short mid-sentence and smiled real big and said Oh wow this is so neat a compass I do not have one of these. So my idea was pulled off without a hitch.... well one hitch... I had gotten this for him and also this astrolabe thingy that honestly I do not know that that is or didnt till he told me when he opened it one of the features on the astrolabe is a compass dial! If I had known that I would not have gotten this one. He never complained about getting two compass's this Christmas he seems to love them both. So all in all win win for team.

MAGNETIC NORTH
I can't believe I got these shipped all the way from foreign lands so quickly and for so little cost; I got two. The needle on both quickly settles toward magnetic North. They both are in perfect accord with my much more expensive (and much older) Boy Scouts of America SILVA map-reader's compass. They have a orientable degree ring. I honestly don't see how they could be more accurate; North is North, no matter how much money one spends finding it. I figure if they survived travelling thousands upon thousands of miles crammed in a big old container, stacked high on a huge ocean-liner, taking breakers, hurricanes, and tsunamis in stride, and then being tossed and slung around by the US postal service, then they should survive hanging on a saddle-string for many a long ride. The second one I got will be put to the real test; I am giving it to my five-year-old girl-friend and best buddy; she is rough on stuff.

Check your dyslexia
So I honestly thought I was buying a pocket watch. I should have guessed by the price that it was in fact a toy. That being said I have reviewed the product for what it actually is. It is the size of the thick pocket watch. It has a nice polished golden coloring. Mine arrived with 2 scratches on it. Testing the finish I could scratch it with pocket change so do not put this in a pocket full of coins. The piece has some weight to it since the outside is metal. The inside is made of plastic. With little effort I was able to pull out the plastic insert. The plastic parts were designed to move so that you can set your degrees on the piece. Overall, I think that it is functional but easily damaged and therefor would not be reliable but I'll give it a 10/10 for classiness.

Sharp as the photo shows but it looks better in your hand Surprize
Sharp as the photo shows but it looks better in your hand Surprize............the needle points to the North true....................well......west is west. But the needle doesn't point to it so get it from the start ........it trues at NORTH. Its a nice looking piece and even the $3 plastic whistle, match holder, compass, 3-in-1 compass they sell at amazon and most . sporting goods is always reliable. Soooooooooo take it for what its worth, Even the foresty service, etc. carry ten each of them in a certain first aid kit. This is a low budget fancy working piece. But I'd never trust 1 compass to go lone on 1 of my hiking trips, etc. However..........just bought this to put it open on my computer desk. LOL!

It's inexpensive. And now I know why.
This compass looks cool. But it doesn't work worth a rat's ____. The metal cover seems to affect the needle. If you lay the compass on a flat surface and spin the compass slowly, the needle will jump around when the lid gets close to the pointer on the needle. Also, I can move this compass around...to different locations within my living room... and the needle will point in various directions as I move. It will not stay pointed to the North! It really is a piece of decorative junk. It's a novelty, not a real compass

Nice novelty that works fine for the average guy.
A lot better then I expected. After reading some of the other reviews I thought it would be a cheap piece of crud but it's not. Well it's not a top end compass and I wouldn't bet my life on it in the middle of winter with nothing is sight but for what it is it's fine. It will tell you where North is within some degree of accuracy and it will get you out of the woods if needs be. As for the looks, its far better then I expected, this is a good deal as long as you're not expecting some professional compass but for a very nice novelty that does work pretty good I'm happy with it. When the magnetic poles flip "N" for "S" and "S" for "N" or anywhere in between those $300 compass's people are getting will all become worthless instantly anyway. This one is looking better all the time. (hahaha....)
