17 CDs of fantastic music. New. Received fast. Just got today and am enjoying it tremendously.

Instead of buying or downloading piece by piece, song by song, this collection has (at least seem to have) all the piano music Chopin has composed. This 17-CD set is a gift from heaven if you like Chopin. I do, and this satisfies my dream to listen to Chopin for hours every day.

The first review gives you a complete listing of what's included in the set. This set is as advertized - the ultimate complete Chopin edition, played by some of the greatest pianists. You get 17 discs at the price of 4 regularly priced classical CDs. (1) If you enjoy Chopin, I'd say the only reason not to get this set is if you already have most of these discs in your collection. I had only a few by Ashkenazy, Pollini and Yundi Li so me the decision was easy: more Ashkenazy and Pollini, plus among the other higlights, Maria Joao Pires and Rafal Blechacz. I had read reviews praising the recordings of Pires and Blechacz and based on initial impressions, the praise is justified. (2) If you have no Chopin in your collection but enjoy classical solo piano music, this is a great opportunity, a bargain - this is a great time to be a fan of classical music. Another recent piano box set that I would recommend is Martha Argerich Collection 1 - the Solo Recordings.

This complete disk set contains many piano players. Players are different and all are not Chopin players by mind. I think the best are Krystian Zimmerman, who plays only a few performances unfortunately, Anatol Ugorski in some compositions, as well also young Vladimir Askenazy, and especially Maria Joao Pires who is a real Chopin player. Maybe also Rafael Blechacz in some compositions. Maurizio Pollini is not by my mind a Chopin player. He plays too loud and uses too much pedal, mechanistic player by my mind. I do not like his playing of Chopin. That is the worst part in this collection or CD's I think.Erkki TerhoFinland

This is an absolutely incredible compilation of absolutely incredible songs by an absolutely incredible composer!Alright, all that aside, let's take a look at the actual product. I have listened to every piece in the set. They are all amazing and they contain every piece by Frederic Chopin.The recordings are great - awesome quality, great performances, my favorite interpretation of every piece!Any classical music lover, extreme studier, or anyone really, will absolutely adore this 17-CD set! Excellent value, good recordings, a nice addition to any collection. Lots of Chopin performed by top notch performers. This is a straightforward and simple boxed set that comes with a decent booklet. The information provided is sparse, but adequate. I was looking to beef up my Chopin holdings and this was just the thing. A good value by a respected labels (DG and Decca).

On Chopin's Nocturnes, I believe Moravec's are the best of all time, and it is not in this compilation. But not having heard the widest array of what Chopin offered, I trusted DG to put together treasures of the highest quality, and overall, it did so. Even the Nocturnes, played by Pires are superb, even though not moody enough for my taste. 90% of the other recordings, by the likes of Ashkenazy and Pollini, are superb playing with excellent recording and a sense of space around the instruments. A very few of the recordings may be great playing, but have not passed through the studio with top results. These few miss a certain "something", including space around the instruments. The price is a bargain for these 17 discs that include 18 1/2 hours of recording. Definitely recommended with the very few caveats mentioned above.
