Seven years after their breakup, a spinster and an impoverished sailor attempt to rekindle their aborted romance. Review: Best of the ones out there - I think this one is the best of the versions out there - it is very classic and conveys the regret and demands held by the woman, and the anger of the spurned man. It seems true to that time with costume and speech. Very enjoyable. Review: An excellent adaptation - Jane Austen's shortest novel is perhaps the most easily adapted to feature film length -- the others do better as serializations -- and this version is superb. Amanda Root as Anne Elliott starts as a sad and slightly depressed young woman who nevertheless always treats everybody well -- better than some deserve, in fact -- but who, when she gets a chance at happiness (after Louisa Musgrove falls in love with Captain Benwick) becomes positive and quietly active in her efforts to recapture the affections of her old love, Captain Wentworth. Ciaran Hinds is an ideal Wentworth, a naval man whose years at sea have rubbed some social polish from him but whose basically attractive directness and good-heartedness have survived. Corin Redgrave is the narcissistic Sir Walter, Anne's snobbish and fiscally irresponsible father, Sophie Thompson is perfect as Anne's limp sister Mary (who has married Charles Musgrove [Simon Russell Beale], who once courted Anne), and Susan Fleetwood (Lady Russell), Fiona Shaw and John Woodvine (as the Crofts, Sir Walter's tenants and Wentworth's sister and brother-in-law) are English theater stalwarts in relatively minor roles, though important to the plot. Sam West is the handsome but manipulative heir to the Elliott estate whom Wentworth thinks of, mistakenly, as a temptation for Anne. The attention to the interiors (that mark social and economic standing) and costume is exemplary, and remarkably little that is important to the book is changed -- one might complain that Anne's elder sister, Elizabeth, a great beauty in the book, is not pretty enough here, and Mrs Clay, who is angling after the widowed Sir Walter, is also insufficiently attractive, when one remembers that good looks matter to Sir Walter almost more than anything. And Anne's friend Mrs Smith comes across as more of an airhead than the chastened invalid of the novel. Anne's final appearance on the deck of Wentworth's ship is maybe a step too far, and their very public kiss at Bath would not have happened as it did in 1814. But these minor quibbles don't diminish the achievement here -- the level of acting is very high and the film's handling of the romantic resolution is satisfying in the way the book's is.

A great classic!
I found this DVD after I bought the newer version. I wanted see what the difference was. This movie was done just as well as the new version. They also used phrases from the book word for word. I liked this movie because it showed different personalities. I found I felt sorry for some of the characters.

Perfect
I do not believe there can ever be a better rendition of this story than the 1995 production with Amanda Root as the long suffering Anne Elliot, Corin Redgrave as the aristocratic fop Sir Elliot and Phoebe Nichols as Anne's chocoholic and otherwise spoiled older sister. Ciaran Hinds is a wonderful Captain Wentworth and I think he is made even better by Fiona Shaw's portrayal as his sister. They have a couple of wonderful exchanges across a dinner table that make me believe they are brother and sister. Helen Schlesinger and Jane Wood have marvelous scenes delivering local gossip as Anne's invalid friend and her nurse. I also love Richard McCabe as the lovelorn Captain Benwick and Robert Llewellyn as the smooth and devious cousin Sir Henry. I love watching every single member of this cast and have always suspected they were from the British stage and came to be on the bill with Sir Redgrave. All of the actors in the cast are just perfect and the climax of this movie delivers the most elegant and tender screen kiss ever. I never get tired of watching that long awaited kiss. :)

None of us want to be in calm waters all our lives
If the pleasures of tea, a letter from a friend, sparkling oceans and ships appeal to you, this movie will be a delight. From the sunlit kitchen tables to the birds chirping at the country estates, you will find the atmosphere and sound very realistic. This is the story of two people seeking a second chance at happiness and almost seeming to pass by one another like two ships in the night. Neither is willing to say what they are feeling as both are still emotionally distraught from their unfortunate breakup. Anne (Amanda Root) is an angel of mercy to everyone around her. She not only provides care, she also seems to be everyone's confidante. In her eyes we see her own private torture, which she tries to hide at all costs. She feels that perhaps she made a mistake in rejecting the love of Capt. Wentworth (Ciarán Hinds), who could not provide for her financially at the time. When he appears in her life again, she fears she may lose him forever. Her own family has gone in various directions due to their own financial difficulties. She is burdened with guilt and financial worries. At first she is shy and melancholy and then when she realizes love may again be within her reach, she blossoms into a beautiful woman who knows exactly what she wants. The temptation at the start of this movie is to just stop the tape and rewind. However, something in the story kept me watching and the conclusion was very worthwhile. The story is not complex, yet the finer details are worth following and are at times very amusing. Some of the dialogue is so wonderful you have to rewind just to listen to it again! Mr. Elliot: "Good company is always worth keeping." Anne: "My idea of good company, Mr. Elliot, is the fellowship of clever, well-informed people who have a great deal of conversation and a liberality of ideas. That is what I call good company." Mr. Elliot: "That is not good company. That is the best." Or when Mr. Elliot is trying to seduce Anne into marrying him he tries to work his way into her heart with some blandishment and yet Anne is only engaging in a casual dalliance. Anne: "You presume to know me very well, Mr. Elliot" Mr. Elliot: "In my heart...I know you...intimately." A relaxing, beautiful and contemplative movie you can enjoy on a cold day with a pot of tea and some heart shaped shortbread cookies. Dreadfully Romantic! ~The Rebecca Review

This is a wonderful adaptation of 'Persuasion'. It's faithful to the text, the period details are very good and the direction and production are both excellent. Amanda Root is exactly as I imagined the heroine to be and Ciaran Hinds makes a wonderful romantic lead, a mixture of love for ann and frustration with her family and friend who exert too much influence upon her. A special mention of the lighting of this production must be made. It's beautiful and atmospheric.
