Excellent quality and amazing build
Can’t go wrong with German engineering when it comes to writing equipment. I’ve been using this brand for over 30 years, not only writing but also in architectural drafting. I love this pen, every color writes super smooth and the mechanical pencil works perfectly.

Well Made & Practical
I was amazed on how well this pen is made and how practical it is. 3 pen colors plus mech. pencil in a solid metal design with an amazing mechanism to choose the colors from. Truly recommend this product.

It is certainly an experience
This is by far the most expensive pen I've ever purchased. I had found an old rOtring multipen and had loved using it, but it stopped working a couple years ago. Deciding that I had been without a multipen long enough, I started searching for a replacement. This pen has all the allure of my old pen and more, but also all of the problems. Pros: - Sleek: This think fits 4 pens/pencils into a 10mm diameter tool. Very nice. - Smooth, but Grippy: It has a glossy finish, but I can easily hold it without it slipping out of my hand. - Cool, gravity-based pen selection system - Weight feels good in the hand Meh: - It's noisy: The pen relies on a pivoting shaft inside it to select which tip to use. This shaft jiggles around when writing, so you won't have a silent writing experience here. I kind of like it, though; the subtle clinking makes you start to appreciate how many moving parts come together to make this pen work. Cons: - The eraser is really bad: It's tiny. The pencil cover is really hard to remove when a tip is engaged, and wiggles a lot when in use. Not good for anything that requires consistent use of an eraser. But I use a separate block eraser when I write with the pencil attachment, so it doesn't bother me unduly. - The rOtring ink that comes with the multipen isn't that good. I would recommend uniball jetstream D1 refills; they write more smoothly, and you can get them in either .5mm or .7mm ink from jetpens(dot)com. Even with all my gripes, I will still use this pen for a long time to come. It's a lasting memory of my grandfather, and a fun writing experience. Edit 9/27/17 ~ 1.5 years later The paint has worn down/been chipped off over the 1.5 years I've had this pen (see photos), but it still works well. Edit 10/14/18 ~ 2.5 years later The black pen mechanism has stopped working. With only 2 of the 3 pens operational, this multipen is a lot less useful, and I will use it less-often. Overall, I have really enjoyed using this product (almost every day) since I purchased it. I have spent about 75$ in ink over the past 2+ years, though. Be aware of the necessity to purchase ink often with any pen that uses D1 refills.

Expensive but high quality
I have been using this writing tool for the past several months. its quality is obvious and all of its component pieces fit together perfectly. It has a nice weight to it but I don't think its too heavy. Also I was a little worried about its diameter and how well it would fit into my hand. Its really not much bigger than my other mechanical pencils and does not at all feel awkward. The selection method works great and I can always select which pen or pencil I want. I actually took the thing apart to understand how it works. Retract the nib by pulling up on the clip. It is spring loaded and makes a nice click when it retracts or extends. To select a pen or pencil retract the nib and then place the tool in a horizontal position and rotate it until the picture of the pen/pencil you want is facing up. Then just push the plunger and out comes the selected nib. This tool is so well built I expect it to last for my lifetime. I am happy with my purchase and I would buy it again.

I love pens
I am a pen collector of sorts. I often buy new high quality pens when a fancy strikes. I needed a multi color pen for field work and looked at various models and makes before settling on the Rotring Multi function. I am familiar with Rotring products. The price was reasonable and the quality of the build and materials did not disappoint. The colors are vibrant and the pen is light weight for its quality. I am currently using it as my EDC. I do suggest Rotring produce a four color pen and eliminate the pencil. I carry a pencil and that configuration would better fit my needs.

Wouldn't buy again
I was looking for a "buy it for life" type of multi-pen. I'm not upset that I bought it, but if I had it to do over, I would have tried something else. The body seems well made, with no apparent plastic. But the clip is thin, formed sheet metal that feels less substantial than it should. It feels like the clip from a 50¢ pen, except powder-coated. If it were just a clip, that probably wouldn't be as big a deal as it is considering that the clip is an integral part of the mechanism. Using the clip as the retraction button sort-of makes sense, but, with other pens, it's integrated in such a way that you can't put something behind the clip without the nib retracting, but that isn't the case here. Here it's just performing double-duty. And it's honestly annoying to push. You have to push at the top, against a fairly stiff spring, and there's not much leverage. It's easy to accidentally block it from pressing by covering the other end with your grip on the pen. And you have to find the clip when you want to retract the nib. Given that you have to rotate the pen to select the different nibs, it's never in the same place. It's just annoying to use. This is the biggest problem with the pen, but not the only one. In order to select which nib to deploy, you rotate the whole pen until you can see the icon for the correct selection, then press the top button. This action seems to work well, but the icons are annoying. They are fine-lined diagrams that you kind of have to make an effort to see. Why are they not just colored dots? The only thing I can think of is to distinguish between the pencil and the black ink, but they decided to use white for both of those. Why not just have white for one and black for the other? That said, it's also a little annoying that they're distinguished by color; what if I wanted to replace the blue ink with green ink? That's easily possible; they're just standard refills, but now I have to know that blue means green. I don't really have a great solution for that beyond some over-complicated icon-selection mechanism, but I wish there were. Once the pencil is selected, the selection button does double-duty as the lead-advancement button, which is fine in theory, but the button is so depressed at that point it has very little travel left. You really have to get your thumb right on top of it, otherwise the body will get in the way and you can't press it enough. And the eraser is underneath the button, which, again, is so depressed that it's hard to get a handle on to remove to get to the eraser. If you don't have fingernails, you will not be able to remove it at this point. If you can see a picture of the button, there are two grooves towards the top. When the pencil is deployed, the button is depressed far enough to hide the lower groove completely. That's only 3mm sticking out. Actually, I just noticed the eraser once you've removed the button. There's about 1.5mm of eraser available for use. That's essentially unusable. I guess you could retract the pencil in order to erase, but that seems ridiculous. (See photo.)

Great pens - will last!
I have two now - a black one from the 1970s when I lived in Germany and one bought last year here in the US. They're pretty much identical and the matte steel tube fits snugly between your index and ring fingers, making writing a pleasure. They're seemingly unbreakable and it's so convenient to have pens and pencils packaged together. I also have some Tikkys and they're of equal quality and convenience. Yes, these are fairly expensive, but they'll last for years and years!
