Drove OTR truck with them through 43 states for three years, then nine months pumping oil with an oil delivery service. They held up, and the soles kept their grip even after massive oil exposure. When I first got them their light weight made them feel a bit cheap, but that was NOT the case at all. Worth the price! Also I have flat feet with very small arches, these worked for me. Boots with too much arch in them kill my feet. These... The Goldilocks "Just Right". I bought a second pair this year, though the first is still wearable and comfy - if not so pretty anymore. Review: Great Pick for the Price Point - The sizing, the materials, the comfort especially, are all great for the price of the boot. Does not disappoint, there's a reason why the military and police use Bates.

Great Boots

Great so far!
My old boots had the traditional idiotic flat soles that they seem to put on most work boots which are only comfortable for the 1/100 who walk flat-footed. The shaped heel on these makes them SO much more comfortable after a whole day walking around. The composite toe makes them lighter than the old, smaller boots that I had. Water-proofing seems effective. And there are a couple little things that have actually surprised me with how much difference they make: the little shaped ridges on back of heel help a LOT with holding doors and such, and the shape/material of the outsole is great when I am climbing around in ceiling spaces and on cubicle walls-they really seem to wrap around and grip well on whatever you are standing on. Also the selection of widths that Bates offers is exceptional, I was able to get these in a 4E which meant for the first time ever I have a boot that does not pinch the wide part of my foot out of the box. I love em so far and would definitely recommend them to anyone needing a boot that can stand up to some punishment.

Great Boot would recommend it but it has a slight small issue that can over looked do to all the other great features
I had been looking for a new set of boots for work for quite some time. After talking to co-workers about brands, styles, types and other factors that are taken into consideration prior to making a purchase I head a ton of good things about Bates. So I looked into the brand further not ever owning a pair prior to these. Long story short for what I wanted and was looking for these fit the bill. I ordered them and love them, they are really comfortable and are really slip resistant as advertised. As with all my footwear I put Orange Super Feet insoles in them only taking the comfort level up a notch. They have a safety toe so you don't have to worry about getting your toes smashed as they are protected. Plus with the zip up side taking them on and off is a snap. They are light weight and they polish and shine really well but with all these pro's I did find one con that made me deduct a star from the rating. Due to the light weight materials used in the construction process the back side inside heel trim tend to rip off. I am going to try to explain this as best as possible without being confusing. As with all my other boots when I come home after working many many hours i am tired and might be a little lazy so I would unzip the side of the boot and then use my right foot to hold my left and pull my foot out of my boot and vise versa with no real issue. With these boots i did that and with in the first week it ripped off the trim of the sole where it meets the boot, now let me say first and foremost this in NO WAY effected the comfort performance or reliability of the boot the only damage was strictly cosmetic. I later after looking at it closely saw that I was just a matter of the material used being light weight a cement used to attach it to the boot and that's why it came off but I also learned that I just need to put my foot directly behind the other boot as so it is square with the heel and not off to the side to hit the rubber part of the boot thus causing no damage. Long story shirt I will buy another pair of these boots as I love them and would suggest others to give them a try. TL;TR - Good solid boots would recommend and will buy a second pair, has tendency to get cosmetic damage caused by regular use and wearing from use of lightweight materials in construction of boots, all issues are strictly cosmetic.

Awesome boots!
I bought my first pair of these to run duty on the ambulance, I am a volunteer EMT-B in Southern Maryland and needed a safety boot to were on duty. The first thought was to buy a steel toe set and then my Mom who is also with the same ambulance company as I said to definetly go composite toe as they do not get as cold as steel toe do in the winter. This is very applicable when you are holding C-Spine on your knees for minutes on end. Most definetly love the zip up side because its too easy to slip them on at two in the morning when a call goes out and you were possibly, though rarely, asleep. They are actually so comfortable that I wear them to work everyday, I am a CNA on the Telemetry unit of a local hospital and do 12+ hour shifts.I am now on my second pair of these amazing boots, the only down side to them is that they can not be resoled. They have a molded sole that only allows them to be worn through one life time of the boot. Never the less, I won't buy another boot to compensate for my hobby and life style.

Edit- FAIL FAIL FAIL Bates comes through again
1.5 years of babied use and the inner lining is allowing the seam where the leather meets the nylon to push through the goretex and put pressure on my ankle. The boots are NOT worn out and I have to throw them away because I can't walk in them. The rest of the boot is in excellent condition but since it's over a year, Bates won't do anything about it. In service, I had Bates shoes and boots which lasted longer than this, until the soles wore out, without any issues, and that was with hard use. This is the testament to todays quality, or lack thereof. Last pair of Bates I ever buy. Original review..... This is a review after 2 weeks of use for about 12 hours per day in Florida temperatures ranging from 75-90' so far. I love them. The composite toe rubs my big toe a bit, there isn't any padding, so that loses 1 star. I'm using boot socks now so it's not huge but it's there. Otherwise, here's my list. I would buy them again at this point. Pros: Light- very light for what you're getting here, I didn't spend all day dreaming of taking them off, in fact, other than getting used to walking in them as opposed to my rockports, I barely remembered I was wearing boots. Tread- seems to stick to everything, the way it should. I have not walked on chemicals, but water and oil on both concrete and metal surfaces doesn't seem to bother them at all Side zipper that actually works- easy on/off like it should be. Heavy enough zipper to function without being bulky Tongue and upper collar- comfortable, I don't have to cinch these super tight for a good fit and also they don't cut my calf in half with that cheap upper collar material. Very nice, very comfortable. Waterproofing- I have not submerged these yet, but I have gone through enough water that normal non-waterproof boots would have gotten wet. No issues here. Will update if this fails. Cons: Composite toe insert, like most, can be a bit pushy on the side of the big toe. These boots appear to fit to size, but you may want to consider good reinforced socks, or a half a size larger or wider to prevent your toe sides from a little rubbing. Personally, I like the fit, so i'm opting for thicker socks. Price- Today there are more options with the same features for 25-35 dollars less. Bates needs to pull back to when they were king of the hill in quality (it's taken a bit of a chinese dip but not enough for me to avoid them yet). Origin- NOT made in the USA. That's the biggest down side of these boots.

Warm and dry, but they do not last.
Good boots, but they did not last very long for me...I live and work along the northern border of the U.S.A., and it gets cold up here! These boots kept my feet warm and dry very well. They are also the most comfortable boots I have ever worn. That being said, they lasted all of 8 1/2 months. the area where around the heel has fallen apart, on the nose of the boots the sole is separating from the boot itself, and the stitching along the outsides of both boots have come apart. Just for some perspective, I work for a multinational package delivery service, so I do quite a bit of moving, and walking around in all climate conditions, however, I still have boots that are in better shape after 4 years and a deployment with the US Marine Corps. All in all, these boots are warm and dry and that is very important for my location, I would have given them 5 stars if they had held up at least a year or two.

GX8 the perfect stealth boot
GX8's: Best boots from Bates, ever. Sadly now, they are discontinued, and their replacement is junk. Do not buy the GXX2 that is being offered as a comparable boot. It is not. If folks would understand that changing something that works and is not broken, just to raise costs can end up costing you customers.

Love these lightweight tactical CSA approved boots!
Fit well and appear well made. Excellent alternative to heavy steel toe work boots.

Unwearable in less than a year
They ran too narrow. Zipper tab broke in 6 months, the zipper itself broke not long after. Stitching on the lace flaps frayed within 3 months. Either spend more on quality boots, or cheap out and replace them often. These are the worst of both worlds.
