Digitally remastered two CD set containing four albums spanning the years 1965-68 for prolific singer/songwriter Jackie De Shannon, a woman who was very much ahead of her time. Features the albums IN THE WIND, ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?, NEW IMAGE and WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW. The song 'What the World Needs Now' was a US Top 10 hit single. Although her recording career slowed down in the 1980s she became a very much in demand songwriter, penning hits such as 'Bette Davis Eyes'. Review: Five Stars - a great way to experience Jackie.......thanks heaps Review: sublime & magical - so many gems included here - A short review of the 48 tracks (originally from 4 of Jackie's 60s LPs)... 'IN THE WIND': most here had actually originally been previously released on Jackie's 1963 LP 'JACKIE DESHANNON' and highlights are the aptly titled 'Blowin In The Wind', 'Walking Down The Line' (outstanding), 'Don't Think Twice', 'If I Had A Hammer' (brilliant), 'Needles & Pins', '500 Miles' (highlight), & 'Puff (The Magic Dragon)' (magical), 'Don't Turn Your Back On Me' (excellent) i.e. most of them (are highlights that is) (9/10); ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?: highlights are 'Music & Memories' (reminds of Supremes), 'Windows & Doors' (a slow start but then soars), 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me' (not as good as Dusty but still good), 'To Wait For Love' (pretty), 'Call Me' (Petula did it slightly better though)...generally though this LP is a little too much like The Supremes style & does not really suit Jackie's folk voice. (8/10) 'NEW IMAGE': this one is a little too MOR sophisticated jazz cocktail pop but it does contain three fine numbers in 'I'll Be Seeing You', 'Time' & 'Where Does The Sun Go' (8/10). 'WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE': this was in fact a compilation from the 60s and of the 12 songs then 2 are from 'THIS IS' including 'What The World Needs Now Is Love' itself? 1 is from 'IN THE WIND'; 5 from 'ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?'; 1 from 'NEW IMAGE'; 3 from 'FOR YOU'. Of the 12 tracks included on this 2CD then 8 are sublime including 'It's All In The Game' & 'Changin' My Mind' from 'FOR YOU'. (strange though to include the same 7 tracks twice on this 2CD compilation) (8/10) Overall a 5 because there are just so many gems included here.

Jackie DeShannon: Finding and owning her own 'New Image'
Not exactly the equal of BGO's recent Jackie DeShannon "Me About You / Laurel Canyon / Put A Little Love In Your Heart / To Be Free:" double-disc set. Yet this older "In The Wind / Are You Ready For This? / New Image / What The World Needs Now Is Love" two-cd set manages to point up some of the very same troubles Jackie had to face in her early career. Fighting for her own individuality in the male-dominated Sixties Pop Music scene, and dealing with record and radio execs who were often anywhere but in-the-moment and simpatico with her musical aspirations, one couldn't help but understand and relate to her sense of frustration. And Imperial Records, home to many a hit 45 by mid-Sixties teen favorites like Ricky Nelson and Johnny Rivers, didn't appear to have a clue about how to promote her. The title of this set's third of four albums included clearly tells the tale: "New Image." The label was forever chasing a new image for Jackie D, but it was ultimately up to her to find and develop her own image. Which she did, clearly, by the time of "Me About You" / "Laurel Canyon." The four elpees that make up this set trace her journey of discovery up to that point (released successively in 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968). The Bob Dylan dominated "In the Wind" is a folk-rock revelation; "Are You Ready For This?" blends Jackie D originals with Bacharach/David, Chip Taylor, and other then-new songwriters' material. "New Image" is her version of an Adult Contemporary album ("I'll Be Seeing You," "A Sunday Kind of Love," "Night and Day"); "What The World Needs Now Is Love" basically packages the title smash with cherry-picked tunes from previous LP releases ("You Don't Have To Say You Love Me," "It's All In The Game," "Call Me," etc.). Recommended to fans of Jackie DeShannon and Sixties Pop in general.

Jackie Looking for a Style
Interesting journey as she tries to find a style truly suitable for her. She should have been bigger but , as you will hear, she jumps from genre to genre. Sometimes smoothly and sometimes not so smoothly. In the Wind and Are You Ready for This are nice and she pulls off some good performances. New Image and What the World Needs Now Is Love are ok in some instances and not so good in others. In fact there is repetition in What the World... with the other albums. If you are following her career then this set is a bargain. Her Atlantic material is actually the best style for her, I recommend that collection before this but this is how she got there.

Einfach Toll !
