The Vengeance of She [Blu-ray]

We were able to get it to play on the computer. I took a chance buying it being out of our reagion but it all worked out well!

The Blu Ray version of this 1968 sequel of "She" can be enjoyed much better with the advance in technology. H. Rider Haggard's story about the fountain of youth as a large blue flame gets more film time. Unfortunately, this sequel lacks the talents of Ursula Andress, Peter Cushing, and Christopher Lee. Colin Blakely makes a colorful appearance.

Had to try and boost the star rating on this one. This is a special film that will be appreciated by fans of 60's - 70's B movies and fans of the occult. It maybe isn't a great film, but it's substance is great! You just don't see movie's like this very often. Very entertaining!

This review is for the Blu-Ray edition of 'The Vengeance of She' released by Shout! Factory in February, 2019.NOTE: For those interested in only the picture and extra's, just go below under 'BLU-RAY' and 'EXTRA'S'.IS THIS MOVIE RELATED TO ANY OF THE OTHER 'SHE' MOVIES AND IS IT A STAND ALONE MOVIE?This release is a direct sequel to the 1964 version of 'She' released by Hammer Films. It has no relation to any of the other movies based on the series of books. You can watch this movie without having seen the previous movie. It will make some references to the previous movie and the character of Kallikrates was in the previous movie but you don't need to have seen it. As with any sequel, you would probably enjoy it a little more if you had seen the first movie but it is not necessary.BLU-RAY: The new Blu-Ray image is nice. I have never been a big fan of the original elements of 'Hammer Horror Productions' movies. They never really seem to be that sharp. This is one of the better transfers I've seen. There is very little in the way of noise or imperfections. The picture is for the most part, clear. The overall image is a bit soft but I believe that is the way the movie was filmed. I am no expert when it comes to photography in general. I just go by what my eyes see. If you are a collector of these types of films then you should be happy with this release. The movie is shown with a 1.66:1 aspect ratio. I'm going to give the picture a 8/10.EXTRA'S:-There is an image of one of the movie posters on the inside of the cover.-Audio Commentary by 'The Monster Party Podcast' hosts Matt Weinhold, Shawn Sheridan, Larry Strothe and James Gonis - You may or may not like this commentary based on your tastes. I kind of thought it was entertaining. This is done from the point of view of a bunch of fans. They aren't as knowledgeable as a typical film historian but together they almost have the knowledge of one! They goof off a lot but sprinkle in facts as the movie goes along. They aren't deeply knowledgeable but seem to have done enough research to be informative. It's kind of like watching 'Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode if the episode had a film historian along to throw out some facts with the comedy. At times it's hard to tell if they are being dumb to be funny or if they are serious. For instance, early in the movie, they call a port city, Monte Carlo or Monaco, which clearly it is not. Nobody corrects this mistake. On the positive side they do seem to have a lot of knowledge of 'Hammer Films'. The movie itself isn't that exciting so it's good to have some comedy rather than listen to a 'dry' historian go on and on about some minor person's biography.-Interview with Trevor Coop, Clapper/Loader - Not a whole lot of interesting info in this 5 minute interview. He talks about his job and he also notes that the director, Cliff Owen, was notoriously a difficult person to work with. He says he ended up getting about 5 times his normal pay because he worked day and night every day for 3 weeks.-Interview with Joy Cuff, Visual Effects Artist - Cuff was the person responsible for designing the outside of the temple and the sculpture of 'She'. She details how this was done. This is about 8 minutes long. She modeled the bust of 'She' after Ursula Andress.-Interview with Terence Clegg, Assistant Director - This is a very short interview of only between 2 and 3 minutes. I'm not sure where this interview came from and why it is only a little over 2 minutes but the only thing of interest that Clegg says is that Edward Judd, the actor playing Dr. Phillip Smith, was difficult to work with. I'm curious if the movie 'Captain Clegg', also by Hammer Productions, was named after him.-World of Hammer Episode "Lands Before Time" - This is an episode from the 'World of Hammer' series that is narrated by Oliver Reed. These were half hour television episodes (with commercials). This one deals with Hammer's dinosaur movies along with movies from ancient times. 'Vengeance of She' and 'She' falls into this category.-Theatrical Trailer-TV Spots-Still Gallery-English Subtitles*****LOTS OF SPOILERS BELOW THIS POINT*****PLOT/SYNOPSIS: Most people looking at this review will know the plot already so I'll keep this brief. I discuss my thoughts below in 'COMMENTS'.Men-Hari wishes to become immortal. Kallikrates, who gained immortality in the previous movie, is the only person (or God) who can grant this and will do so if Men-Hari can bring back, Ayesha, his lost love. Carol along with her companion, psychiatrist Dr. Phillip Smith, is being telepathically guided to Kuma by Men-Hari and his group of Magi. In Kuma, Men-Hari has been using 'evil' methods in order to achieve his goals. Kallikrates has been convinced that Carol is Ayesha. In order to achieve immortality, a person must enter the sacred flame on the prescribed day. Kallikrates wants Carol (Ayesha) to enter the sacred flame so that he can spend all of eternity together with her. Men-Hari wants immortality for obvious reasons. When Carol reaches Kuma, she no longer recognizes Dr. Phillip. She now believes that she is Ayesha. Can anybody make Carol realize she is not Ayesha before it's too late (Too late, you might ask?... I discuss this below in 'IMMORTALITY').PRODUCTION: This movie was made in 1968 by Hammer Film Productions. It was released in the United States by 20th Century Fox. 'Vengeance' was not a commercially successful movie.-This movie was originally going to by called 'Ayesha - Daughter of She'. Then it was titled 'The Return of She'. Ultimately, the movie was temporarily cancelled when it became apparent Ursula Andress wouldn't be in the film.-Filming took place in the south of Spain and in a studio in England.-Ursula Andress, who plays 'She' in the first movie was not available for the sequel. A search had to be conducted. Ultimately, Olga Berova was chosen, probably because she had a similar look to Andress.-The movie had one of my favorite 'Hammer' actors, Andre Morell, but his talents are pretty much wasted in this movie. This would be his final film for Hammer.-John Richardson stars as Kallikrates. Edward Judd is the real star of the movie despite not getting top billing.-Edward Judd made a nuisance of himself on the set. This would be a common thing with him throughout his career. He had a very inflated opinion of himself and thought he deserved to be in better movies. He made disparaging comments about Olinka Berova. His career took a downturn after this movie.-Olinka Berova who plays Carol (Ayesha) was on the cover of Playboy magazine in the 50's. She was in a pictorial about woman behind the iron curtain. Some people involved with the movie did not speak kindly about her acting ability and intelligence. Berova was from Czechoslovakia and had been in 11 movies up until this point.-I learned from the commentary that Peter Cushing was initially going to reprise his role from the previous movie. His character would have been well over 100 years old if he had.COMMENTS: IMMORTALITY: Is there anybody out there who wouldn't want to be immortal? Would anybody not go to the lengths that Men-Hari did if you can achieve this? If so, you are an extremely noble person! First off, it is extremely selfish of Dr. Phillip to try and stop Carol from gaining immortality. Secondly, what would be wrong with spending eternity ruling the world with your beauty forever intact? I think most people, once they got over themselves and got past their righteousness, would realize that what Kallikrates offers is probably the greatest gift in the universe. While we are at it, I think Kallikrates could wait a little longer since he has all of eternity. I'd like to have a talk with him. You don't kill yourself over one woman when you can have anybody else in the world. I'd like to know what talents this Ayesha had! She must be really special if you would give up immortality and kill yourself. What exactly was Kallikrates doing in this dingy mountain anyway? Keep in mind that Kallikrates was a normal human and he knows what's out there. OTHER COMMENTS:-They may as well have called this movie, 'The Vengeance of He'. The title is poorly chosen and clearly it was given the name for marketing reasons. There is no vengeance whatsoever. The only people doing the killing were Kallikrates' minions. Men-Hari is really the only person who shows vengeance. There is nothing for 'She' to be vengeful about.-I don't think it mattered that Ursula Andress wasn't available for the sequel because the character of Carol wasn't the same person. Men-Hari was just looking for someone who looked similar so he could be granted immortality for helping Kallikrates.-I don't like to complain about movies as being too long. I'm of the belief that more is better... most of the time. I thought this movie was too long for the limited material the screenplay had. I don't want to say that the movie was padded since it lasts an hour and 41 minutes. This is fairly long for a movie of it's time in it's day. Therefore they didn't need padding. Ultimately, this movie takes way too long to get going. The main character of Carol (Ayesha) is still on the boat almost 30 minutes into the movie and she doesn't even get to her destination until over an hour has passed. This is too long. It's too long because her destination is the point where the movie is really supposed to get going. It isn't the final destination for a movie about a journey.-The podcast guys from the commentary point out a few interesting things. Most of the interesting characters die in the first half of the movie. Harry, the drunk captain, dies in the first half hour. George, Phillip's partner, kicks the bucket early also. Kassim, who is set up as an opposing magician, gets knocked off shortly after he shows up in the first half of the movie.-This movie might have done better in the box office if it were made a few years later and they could show nudity. This movie was just screaming for a nude scene with Olinka Berova. Just like Inrgid Pitt spiced up her movies with nude scenes, the same could have been done here. As the commentators pointed out, this movie seemed to be made for nobody. It's not for kids and there isn't anything in it to appeal to adults.CONCLUSIONS: DID I LIKE THIS MOVIE? No, I certainly did not. Honestly, I don't like this movie and I find it to be quite boring. This is not a movie I will want to sit through again. This was the second time I watched it and then I sat through it a third time to listen to the commentary.RATINGS/RECOMMENDATIONS: I can only recommend this movie for obviously Hammer Film Productions fans.PLOT: 4/10 or 2 starsPICTURE: 8/10 or 4 starsEXTRA'S: 8/10 or 4 starsOverall: 3 starsThanks to Shout! For us Hammerheads , this is a 51/52 year old vintage winner . I like this film as much as , if not more than She (1965) . It's got a generous running time , swell locations , an excellent cast and plentiful adventure . This may strike non Hammer enthusiasts as a 3 star film (or less) . So be it . It's our secret .

The Vengeance of She is a disappointing waste of 90 mins. She starts promising, with the beautiful Carol (Olinka Berova) walking aimlessly, drawn by torturous voices in her head. She meets a phsychiatrist, Dr. Phillip Smith, who for some reason (probably to reach boyfriend status) decides to join the young woman in her quest to nowhere. These two find a lost city where live the immortal ones. Here in the "lost city" King Killikrates is having Carol lured to them to assume the identity of Ayesha. Carol is not SHE or her or Ayesha...whatever. The King and his mystic are just making her or She.......Carol just think that she is SHE. That's the plot! This happens to be the most convoluded mess to come out of Hammer studios. I usually adore Hammer Productions but this is like a slow death. I'm not really sure I understand why SHE seeks vengeance. If you want to see an interesting tale of beautiful women weilding weapons watch The Viking Queen. Lots more action, and less identity crisis

My sister recorded this movie on dvr so I watched it. Thats an hour and forty five minutes of my life that I can't get back. This movie is mediocre but if low and slow campy movies with an idiotic plot are your thing go for it.

The Movie came in good condition and I enjoyed it. The other movie Sinbaad The Sailor did not. The case was broken in two places. The movie played fair.

I've never before known about this title, I know about the film She, so when I see this title good for the collection, it's a good movie in colour, I will class this as SiFi adventure.Supplier good no problems..
