Superman: Man of Tomorrow (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Combo Pack)

First, it's a shame that the digital download code has already expired. I suppose that explains why the disk was over 45% off in the first place. That sort of disappointment deserves a lower star rating, but the quality of the film does sorta make up for it. In Superman: Man of Tomorrow, we see a young adult Clark Kent getting his professional start at the Daily Planet along with recent graduate Lois Lane. The Daily Planet scenes are to be expected, but this interpretation of Clark Kent is reminiscent of Christopher Reeve in positive ways. You do believe that he and Superman are two different people. The film shines by not making Kal-El a tragic orphan. Pa Kent survives in this timeline, and it seems that Clark is far less interested in his roots than other iterations of the story. I think that's fair and reflective of some adoptees. The mix of supporting characters is interesting. Lobo steals the show. As I was watching, I thought to myself "Dang, Jason Momoa really should have played a live action Lobo." Not two days later, the news broke that he will be playing Lobo in the future! I also enjoyed Martian Manhunter and Lex Luthor, who was predictably sinister. I am not really into animated films, but the style of this one was quite good. There was not an overreliance on CGI enhancements, just really good animation. I'm looking forward to diving into the rest of the Tomorrowverse!

I really enjoyed this movie! I've been a Superman fan since the '70s, though I'm not an expert and can't speak well to how this relates/compares to the various comics and to canon for all the characters. But as a fan I'd say it's really well done. The storyline was engaging and kept my attention, which says a lot given how easy it is to multitask these days, especially as I was watching on my computer. I enjoyed the variety of characters and definitely didn't guess how it was all going to work out. Oh and bonus points for sneaking in a mention of Batman (not a spoiler). The casting worked really well. Darren Criss is a great choice to play the "Big Blue Boy Scout" since he's such a boy scout himself, in addition to being a talented actor & voice actor. I'm a bit biased as I'm a huge fan of his, but the fact that I wasn't constantly aware that I was listening to his voice throughout the movie speaks to his effectiveness in the role and to the extent to which I became engrossed in the movie. Zachary Quinto is definitely a great Lex Luthor, and all the actors were quite good. (It was hard for me to hear Neil Flynn without thinking of Mike Heck though!) It is disappointing that it costs more to pay for digital and watch it when it's first released than it costs to order the whole BluRay/DVD/Digital combo to watch in 2 weeks, but now that I've seen it I'm glad I didn't wait. If you're a fan of Superman, superheroes, or of course any of the actors, definitely check it out!

The title is an exaggeration, but it really does deserve the stars. It's a movie that stays true to the importance and purpose of superman; to inspire hope and empathy into the hearts of many. As a person who's consumed far too many movies, shows, and comics from dc; I may not agree with every adaptation or interpretation of these heroes. But if I see it comes from a place of love, appreciation, or respect for the world I'm willing to understand it. Personally, this is one of the better interpretations of Superman and his world I've seen in a while. But there are too many ignorant and straight-up mean people who see this as SJW-propaganda because they see any piece of media that promotes peace, empathy, and understanding of those that look different from ourselves as propaganda. And it's seriously frustrating because the whole purpose of Superman is that he's a literal immigrant from space that uses his great power and morality from his adopted parents to pave a better world for those around him(regardless of their differences). And that's exactly what Superman does in this movie, so don't listen to the idiots, it's a really faithful movie. It's also one of the better animated and vibrant animated dc movies I've seen in a while so there's that to look forward to too. (honestly, fights are really well animated and the characters are likable).

Wow. This movie is exactly the best of a superhero story. Totally entertaining tons of action and intrigue. The script is really thought through and tells a story that interests you throughout. This movie isn't an origin story its Superman's introduction to what he is going to do for the rest of his life, which is many things including being a champion for Earth, being a reporter for the daily planet, being a son to his parents, etc. An introspection of Superman's journey to accept his path with this gift and life he has been given. This movie you'll be rooting on the characters. Which is another reason you'll like this movie. You get involved with the characters even the unlikely characters in this film like Lobo and his brashness or Lois and her willingness to do anything to control the situation and get the story. A huge difference that makes this a great movie is the quality. The acting is top notch, everyone sounds like they should. The sound is perfect from the monster yells to the peoples cries. The visuals were the best though. The new way they draw and animate this film is like no other before it. Really amazing talent and time that made the picture colorful, clean, crisp, with a pleasing look. It makes it like your reading a comic book. What a great way to reboot their superhero animated universe. I can't wait for the follow up to this movie. Highly recommend this one. I didn't go into much of the story cause I want you to experience the story for yourself and for you to buy this movie, it is worth it. Two thumbs up!

First, the best part: I really loved the animation style. Simple. Elegant. Best of all, it's bright! I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the brightness of the Timmverse. The animation that DC has been producing for the last 15 years has had darker shadings for the most part. It adds a much needed sense of optimism that the world so desperately needs now. The plot was good. Not great. But good. Excellent script. Excellent voice work, especially Zachary Quinto (Lex Luthor) and Brett Dalton (Parasite). I've read that this film is the first in a new DC Animated Universe. This pleases me greatly.

The sound design in this movie is chilling, and at times amazing, and in the second half the sound design itself makes you not want to take your eyes off the screen. This movie has some of the best animation of DC, but also some of the Worst. Standing-around-talking scenes makes Archer look like Rembrandt, and you can clearly see only 1 thing moving at a time, whether that be an eyebrow or a jawline, making a jarring watch. Also some characters are over-exaggeratingly obtuse, especially Lex Luthor that had a moment that is the definition of cringe. A good movie, but in many ways it is not worth a re-watch. The ending is very sad, however, and is a good addition to DC, overall.

So we all know, more or less the origin of Superman. But this particular take on the Man of Steel, or Man of Tomorrow in this case, focused more on his being an alien in a human world and him coming to terms with that. You could used this metaphor for just about anything where people may judge you harshly for just being who you are. Intolerance in all its evil forms being what it is. But this is a fun, hopeful movie that gives us more than I expected. A really good addition to the continued winners that are the DC direct to Video Animated movies. If you are a fan of Big Blue, pick this up. If you're a fan of the other DC movies, pick this up. And that's about all I have to see about it. Thanks for reading and have a nice day!

It was good. It wasn't great but then not every movie is. It's a Superman origin story without the absolute origin that everyone knows by now. It had a different aspect in that it shows Superman becoming Superman with a little help from his "friends". All in all a reasonably entertaining movie.
