Oregon Professional Compact 120-Volt Bench Chain Grinder | Universal Saw Chain Sharpener, for All Chainsaw Chain Types, Bench Mounted, Professional Grade

First off I just want to say that I’ve tried the buffalo tools the Chicago electric and the trupower sharpeners and all of them will only do one type of chain the micro chisel chain so after much frustration mostly on my part thinking I’d get a decent sharpener for under a hundred bucks I was so wrong I cut and split at least 10 to 12 cords of wood every year for use in heating my home so I use several different saws and chains ranging from 12” to 36” chains from micro chisel to 7/16” ripping chains at various pitches and finally I decided to go with a name brand sharpener yes it’s a little pricey but you get a lot for the money the other ones I’ve tried were mostly plastic this one is aluminum only 3 plastic parts and those are the knobs to turn to adjust to the chain being sharpened it comes with 3 different grinding wheels it takes a little getting used to everything that this sharpener does but after reading the manual and bolting the unit to my homemade stand I was up and running I’ve got a lot of chains laying around due to high prices of chains especially the 36” chains I sharpened 21 chains in an hour then changed grinding wheel and sharpened a few 7/16” chipper chains with a wheel change and angle adjustments I was up and running in under 10 minutes this is an awesome product I can’t believe I wasted so much time and money on the cheaper ones if you own a small engine shop like me and cut a lot of firewood or if you just want to sharpen chains for yourself to have extras on hand no matter what the reason is I definitely suggest this grinder it’s a name brand that’s been around for years and it’s well worth the money in no way was I paid to give a review I just purchased this item and got it delivered to my door in one day I absolutely love this sharpener I’ll be buying another one in the near future just to keep one type of wheel on it for my a few of my chains and for the arborist companies that I have for customers and it’s worth saving your pennies for a good sharpener

My experience with this device has been pleasant. The wheels work smoothly and the LED light is a helpful addition when working in dim areas. The adjustments feel sturdy and reliable, making it simple to operate. Although the stop mechanism isn’t my favorite, it doesn’t affect overall performance. It holds the chain securely during use, which I appreciate. Overall, I’m happy I decided to purchase it.

I've had cheap sharpeners, they work for a while sort of. After using this, night and day. Much more accurate and consistent sharpening, my chains cut longer before needing resharpening. Simple to use. Expensive but worth it. Especially if you sharpen chains alot.

Let me begin by saying that I am just a typical homeowner that heats my house with wood and I cut multiple cords a year. I enjoy firewood cutting and running chainsaws and through the years have used about every sharpening tool available. I finally decided I needed to step up to the Oregon grinder after a long bout with files, rotary tools and hand cutters(Timberline). When the Oregon Bench Grinder arrived, I mounted it on my bench and proceeded to adjust it according to the instructions. What I found was that the grinding wheels are wider than their advertised size. This resulted in reforming the cutting profile on the cutter tooth and removing a lot of metal in the process. The other problem was the chain guide. This particular model has a cheap guide made of two parallel rails that pinch together in the middle. The distance between the rails is so wide that the the chain flops around. When the handle is rotated to pinch the chain in place, it only pinches in the middle at a small point. The issue was that the chain would cant when the rails were pinched. This made it impossible to get even results on both rows of cutters. I ended up taking the mounting bolts out and filing down the blades that separate the two rails so they were much narrower and held the chain better. This solved the canting problem and now holds the chain in a solid vertical position while sharpening. The other problem with this kind of grinder is that the wheel only spins in one direction. For the left side cutters, the grinding wheel leaves a large burr which affects the cutting action of the saw. I have watched youtube videos of others who have this problem. One solution was to spin the grinding wheel in reverse with a drill and then switch the motor on which then ran the wheel in the reversed direction for the left side cutters. ( I haven't dared try this yet). My last fix was to use a grinding wheel one size smaller than normal which gave me the ability to more accurately adjust to the contour of the cutting tooth. The grinder has a couple of adjustment "bump stops" to restrain how far the grinding wheel cuts into the cutter tooth, however, there is a lot of flex in the adjustments and great care must be taken to keep all the teeth sharpened equally. Conclusion: Yes, this grinder works. It is much quicker than other methods. However it isn't perfect and requires some careful adjustments and attention to detail in order to make it sharpen a chain with satisfactory results. Yes, it can sharpen a chain, but don't expect to have new chain like sharpness without a lot of time invested in adjustments and technique.

I have been living in a forest, and using firewood here in MT, for 17 years. I enjoy cutting my own logs into rounds, splitting them, stacking them, and burning them. I was aware of chain saws before this, but by no means an expert. About 15 years ago, I bought a Harbor Freight grinder/sharpener, for probably $40. It was 'ok' for setting the edge of the cutters, but not much else. It is also fairly loose, so every grind isn't the same as the next. I mostly used a Dremel with grinding bits to 'touch up' the cutters. I finally broke down and got this grinder. I knew it was recognized as the best in the business, but didn't want to spend almost $300. Well, it is on sale now for $200. I made the choice and ordered it. It came today. Took me about 45 minutes to make a stand and get it set up. The instructions are 'ok', but I was confused how things 'moved' at first. Got it figured out. Setup for the angles is simple, just follow the chart. After setting it up, I began to grind the chain I had been using. After the first cutter, I was shocked at the difference in the cutting edges. I had been nowhere close to the right angles. It took a lot off the cutters, since things were so messed up, but that will change with subsequent sharpenings. I haven't set the rakers yet, that will be tomorrow, but I already know they are close. Took the sharpened chain out with my Husky Rancher and tried a log. It practically fell through the wood. I feel I was using half the pressure to guide the bar, and without timing before and after, I also feel it cut 40% faster. The difference in chips was obvious, as the new chips were sitting on top of the 'sawdust' I had been making before. This is a quality product, at a good price now, and well worth the expense. I just wish I had ordered it before I did the first 2 of 6 cords I need to cut for winter. The next 4 will go much quicker.

Clear improvements in the wheels and the LED light make it a handy tool for my workbench. The device is simple to operate, and I appreciate how securely it holds the chain during grinding. Even though I was hesitant about spending a bit more, I feel satisfied with this purchase overall.

So much easier than using a file. After getting set up it takes little time to sharpen a chain. Great tool.

I’ve hand sharpened my chains for over 40 years and I’m pretty good at it. But on one job I hit some imbedded nails in the trees and went through 4 chains. They were bad enough that I knew it was major time to file them out. I bought the Oregon Sharpener and couldn’t be happier. Took me about 20 minutes to get it set up. I experimented on one chain to get the setting perfect and then away I went. The grind is super nice and exact. The saws are taking out chunks of wood which really tells the story of how sharp they are. And the best part is I wasn’t spending all my time sharpening and not cutting. Wish I had bought this years ago. Just a tip for new users. Don’t just push down and grind. Do light taps with the grinder so you don’t heat the chain tooth. If you turn it blue it got too hot.

Overall a great little machine. A few light duty points but for the price it is great. My set up needs to be bench mounted, not wall mounted, yet portable. In my opinion the casting and mounting holes for bench mounting are lightweight, it makes me nervous that it could crack the casting if bumped hard. So I mounted it on a board with a vertical board as well to simulate the wall mount and no more concern. Also, the depth stop doesn't make a full contact to the motor, it kind of touches an edge of the adjusting knob, it works though but I thought it could have lined up in a more positive way. Lastly, to change the stones you have to remove the guard, which is understandable. However the guard is plastic and I can see that the screw holes will likely wear out over time. I know more expensive Oregon models have a hole in the centre of the guard for accessing the mounting nut so the guard doesn't have to be removed, I'm considering to drill a hole to do this as well. So my comments shouldn't be construed as reasons not to purchase, just my observations. My first few chains that I sharpened came out great and cut so nice. The biggest challenge is understanding chains in general, i.e. the differences between chisel and chip and low profile chains and which need a 10 degree down angle and which don't... Nonetheless I recommend this grinder, it is good value.

Very good for what I need and sharpen chains up well takes a bit to set up it's saved a ten bucks a chainsaw sharpening

Our chains are now sharp and make our chainsaw work that much more efficient and less frustrating. On the negative side, setting the angles is guess work. There are no notches at the common angles such as 25 or 30 degrees. You need to eyeball it using the degree label on the front. This model is absolutely made for the occasional sharpener. While I have not tried the more expensive models, don't stinge on the quality when purchasing.
