Not a vegan, but I love this stuff!
I first tried nutritional yeast years ago when I was toying with the idea of becoming a vegan. That last all of about a day and a half, but my love of 'nooch has persisted. Admittedly, I go through phases. There are times when I want to eat it on everything, and then times when I completely forget it exists. For the longest time, I would buy Bragg's, which I thought was the gold standard, but I've since tried several other brands, including the one that Trader Joe's used to carry, stuff from the bulk bin at the grocery store, Anthony's from here on Amazon, and now, this one, Hoosier Hills. My last container of Bragg's had ZERO flavor - it was like putting vaguely umami dust on my food - and I was disappointed because it had always been my favorite. I thought maybe it'd expired, but it was still very much within date. And so I took a chance and ordered this giant tub, hoping that it would taste like the Bragg's of old. I can now safely say that, in terms of taste, this HH 'nooch is a winner and is the one I will continue to purchase because the taste, quantity and value are all better than Bragg's, or any of the other competitors I've tried. Item arrived appropriately filled (not half-filled, like some others have experienced), the container was sealed perfectly, and the flakes were still large and mostly intact, unlike others that become super fine and powdery in transit. The taste is very reminiscent of Bragg's, if that's the flavor you're after, but the flakes seem larger. I love using this over salad (literally any salad can be made better with a large scoop of this on top), avocado toast and popcorn. Obviously, it's good for making vegan cheese sauces and such, but that's not my main use. For under $13 on subscribe and save, it's a total no-brainer to get yourself a tub and give it a try. I've had mine in the house for under a week, and it's almost half gone. Time to reorder!

Fav Nooch!!
This is my favorite nooch. The flakes are so BIG (at first - it's pretty much dust by the time you get to the bottom, but nothing you can do about that really), and the price is great for the quantity. I have purchased a couple of other brands at a slightly lower price not realizing that the container was MUCH smaller than this one, so I'm sticking with the from now on. I use it quite a bit and it lasts me a good while. Tastes amazing. Love it. (1c measuring cup in photo for reference.)

Nice product! Great for Kale Chips!!
I love nutritional yeast! I never thought I'd say that until I tried kale chips for the first time. I also figured my new adoration for kale chips would set me back a few $$$ unless I learned to make them myself, which I soon did (they're surprisingly easy with a food dehydrator set on 105F). This product just enhances the savings that much more. I even made what has become "steve's famous kale chips" seasoning and keep it in the fridge in bulk to sprinkle on all sorts of things. I score and remove seeds and the membrane of medium-hot red chili's (about 3 small ones), chop them very fine and add to a 12oz. can of cashews , grind them up very fine adding a little nutritional yeast as I go so it doesn't clump up and then mix in as much yeast as I want to taste as well as two packets of honey granules (you could use 1 packet of sugar, splenda, or truvia instead). Normally, I wash and dry kale after pulling from the stems and coat liberally with lemon (or lime if you want a wonderful chili-lime taste) juice and then toss the kale with the yeast mixture. I'm finding ever new ways to use nutritional yeast. Hoosier Farms makes a good product. I was at first a little surprised by the somewhat smokey smell to it when I first opened it (vs. that rich cheddar cheesy aroma that Braggs usually has), but it came out just as great for a fraction of the price.

Pretty good nooch
Over the past year and a half, I've bought seven different brands of nutritional yeast. Not all nutritional yeast is created the same. From one brand to the next, the flavor can vary A LOT. With some, the differences are in texture, if it's gritty or if it dissolves well, how salty it tastes or how pungent, or how "yeasty" it tastes, etc, and these flavor differences do not always coincide with whether it is fortified or non-fortified. Some have big flakes, some are fine powders. And of course some brands are outrageously expensive. Of course I cannot afford to spend an outrageous amount of money on nooch, so of all the ones I've tried, apart from Bragg's, none were more than $15 per pound. I purchased them all at different times and when one ran out I bought another one. One of these days I'll get around to having all of them in front of me at the same time and doing a proper comparison taste test (possibly with video?). If any manufacturers of high-end noch would like to be in the taste test, feel free to send me a sample, but fair warning, if your nooch isn't any better than the cheap stuff, I will be perfectly honest. ๐ธ But on to this review: for the Hoosier Hill Farm large yeast flakes (fortified), it ranked probably in the top three or four. Of course this is going by memory alone and some of those other brands I bought a long time ago, but I think my favorites were Terrasoul and Frontier, but this Hoosier Hill Farm isn't far behind. I'd say it's a good flavored basic nutritional yeast, nice texture and good value for the money. Flavor preferences are pretty subjective of course, but I think this one was pretty good.

this large flake nutritional yeast is excellent for breading fried or baked tofu
Arguably one of the most important culinary fixings in a vegan kitchen, this large flake nutritional yeast is excellent for breading fried or baked tofu, sprinkling on vegetables, or substituting for cheese on pizza or pasta (made more convincing when mixed with ground nuts to create a beautifully tempting, cheesy substitute). This Hoosier Hill Farm nutritional yeast is excellent, and I should know- after spending a good deal of my youth as a vegan, I ate mountains of the stuff (though, instead of the convenient container shown here, I carted my nutritional yeast around in a plastic bag from my grocer's bulk aisle, tied off with a rubber band, messy and inconvenient). Anyway, after leaving veganism more than a decade ago, I figured I'd never see nutritional yeast again, and, until my oldest teen announced that she wanted to go vegan, I was right. As soon as she "turned" I saw an opportunity to get her interested in cooking (let's face it: on planet vegan, if you don't cook you don't eat), and I immediately started the process of sourcing the essentials: nutritional yeast, chia seeds, flax seeds and assorted egg substitutes, xanthan gum, what-have-you, and commenced to cooking up a vegan storm (all in an attempt to get my daughter connected to her culinary superpowers). Now, while she is showing a little more interest in the culinary arts, I'm the one who is really getting a kick out of cooking vegan again- there is something so very satisfying about preparing vegan dishes that the carnivores like. Because I'm making vegan dishes for my daughter, I find ways to make her dishes double as sides for the carnivores and, in some instances, actually serve as entrรฉes for the carnivores as well- it's become a test of my culinary dexterity (albeit self-imposed). Anyway, this large flake nutritional yeast is as good as you'll find anywhere, and I'm giving it five stars.

An absolutely a must in my pantry.
I've become very used to using this as a flavor booster for that nutty flavor with stuff, and in place of cheese at times. The taste has been consistently good quality, the smell never seems off, and the various things you can put it in is great. You can use it to thicken as a replacement for cornstarch/flour for more robust flavoring, or add into some cheese-based things for an extra nutty kick. Or just use as full-on replacement for a different type of mac n' cheese. It even works great with meat, doing pretty darn good with ground beef or ground pork for extra flavor in like tacos (with a cumin focused version makes it extra earthy), chili (or chili mac), or even brown/red curry stuff. Hoosier Hill Farms seems to have the ingredients down pat that make this work so well. Protein content is fine, but really the "star of the show" is the Vitamin B1/B2/B3/B6/B12 concentrations, so if you are low on such, this is a great edible source vs taking vitamins. Though fair warning: your urine will be colorful if you overdo the yeast flakes!

Yummy!
I really lik d this brewers yeast. I found the larger flakes were fantastic I bought this originally because it was a great deal cost wise with the intention of grinding to a powder. I use this for my cats it helps their tummies and immune systems and as an added bonus makes their skin taste bad to bugs! Yes, you heard me correctly adding this to their food will keep bugs away lfes ticks and mosquitoes how fantastic this is naturally offering bug patrol and pets love the taste it's like a treat to them. I personally will sprinkle on popcorn but I mainly buy for the kiddos oh they stay indoors but I always know there is potential that something could enter the house and I offers me peace of mind I don't have to bathe my cats and make them traumatized or give them purely awful chemicals that can also harm them naturally I help my fur babies. But yes this product I'd great it has a secure lid I can reach in and grab a pinch or a scoop however much I need the container is sealed and versatile to user. The nutritional value is exceptional too. No no one has paid me for this but just want my fur babies healthy and happy.

Definitely will buy again!
This is the first time I have tried nutritional yeast flakes, and I am very pleasantly surprised. This is my new go-to for creaminess and great umami flavor, not to mention the health benefits of 7 grams of protein in 2 tablespoons and an array of B vitamins. So far I've used them to make gravy, mac n "cheese", sprinkled them over veggies like parmesan cheese, and tried them on popcorn. Yummy in every way. If you're wondering what they taste like, we had a taste test when I received them. I got the brown bits from the bottom of a roasting pan, my daughter got chicken gravy, and my Mom got cheddar cheese, and that pretty much sums it up. They are extremely versatile, and I am happy to buy them from a North American source. I will be definitely buying these again as a part of my staple pantry.
