The collaboration of studio whiz Geoff Barrow and singer Beth Gibbons, Dummy was made at the same time as a short film noir called "To Kill a Dead Man," and the same approach--gloomy, tormented, and wildly melodramatic--permeates the album. "Sour Times" (the hit in which Gibbons cries, again and again, "Nobody loves me, it's true") and the more cryptic "Glory Box" are the linchpins of the album, defining its sound: dark flashes of old soul and film music, dehumanized electronic bleeps, Gibbons emoting like she's consumed by shame, and a bass-and-beat pulse derived from the slow bump and grind of the Bristol scene that spawned Barrow's old collaborators, Massive Attack. --Douglas Wolk 11-track version includes 'It's a Fire' not featured on the 10-track version. Universal. 1994. Review: Excellent Album - Item is perfect as is described. Would order again. Review: Great album from when music was good! - CD speaks for itself. Just a classic and if you know Portishead then this is a must own.

...Not like you do...
Hopefully I'll never be so jaded that I won't be able to recognize a masterpiece. Even when it comes from a genre that I don't particularly care about. Even when it has so obviously been produced to "wow". Even when it has much more than a whiff about it of slickness and of product. But nobody could ever calculate all of the elements that come together to make this such an evocative and moving work. I am probably alone in having Numb as my favorite track. But the vividness of all of the sounds! I could eat them. That Hammond - that drum sound. It goes right into my belly and my heart. Beth Gibbons has something about her sound that reminds me of my beloved Alison Statton of Young Marble Giants. It's a strange comparison. Beth is obviously much more of a "singer" than Alison ever was. But maybe it has something to do with the way they both place themselves INSIDE the music rather than the usual singer thing of on top of it. Maybe there's a psychological similarity rather than a sonic one. When this CD came out, it was played in every hip café and restaurant. I tried to resist it - especially the hit, Sour Times. But it was impossible to resist. That plaintive cry "Nobody LOVES me!..." Such an ambiguous, poignant moment. And all those filmic downward bass lines and strings (especially on Glory Box) - delicious! 15 years on, it still sounds great. Is it too commercial, too slick? It is definitely both commercial and slick. But it is also musically brilliant, compelling and magical.

Amazing Album!! Stoked to have this on Vinyl again!!
I love this album so much!! I have had it many times throughout the years both on Vinyl and CD and each time it has gotten damaged, lost or loaned out and never returned. I had been wanting to add this to my collection again for years and am so glad that I finally did!! The price on this seems to fluctuate quite frequently and quite a lot. If you are looking to order it I suggest to watch it for awhile and try to get it when it is at the lower end. This is absolutely one of the 50 greatest albums of all time. Highly suggest adding to your collection if you are into elctronic or trip hop music.

Great Quality Record, Poor Handling
The record itself is near perfect. It's quiet, flat, and a high quality pressing. No issues there. And naturally this is one of Portishead's best albums. Deep, mysterious atmosphere with a perfect mood for some easy listening during a rainy afternoon or late night reading. But I'm no music critic, just an appreciator; so I won't go into detail on the music itself here. My only complaint is the condition the sleeve came in. As you can see in the photos, it has many bends, creases, and marks that are the taletell sign of poor storage and/or handling during fulfillment of the order. This can't be blamed on the post office since the packaging itself was undamaged, it's only upon opening it that I found this extremely disappointing issue. As a collector, this is very upsetting. If it were just a dent or two, I wouldn't mind as much and usually it isn't this bad for most albums I order off this site, but I mean, look at it. That being said, maybe this is the exception, but sellers take notice! It really matters how the item looks when it's received even if it works perfectly fine.

ONLY UPSTAGED BY THE SECOND RELEASE
WOW!!! Now everyone splits indifference. Feast your ears on when the timeline began to skew... and the skewlines began their rule. There was a time... and they were part of it.

Unforgettable sound experience
The vinyl arrived in great shape and is solid 180g pressing. The sound quality is excellent and hearing Beth Gibbons’ voice on vinyl is an unforgettable experience. A must have for any Portishead fan!

Great Chill album
This is a great album, not on everyone’s radar but should be. Superb sound, great tracks, one of my favourite chill albums. If you’ve not heard it, maybe stream it first but if you do you will buy it. I think I’ve had this on just about every format available but the vinyl is my favourite.
