What is a bonsai training pot? do i need one, and can i use this if i have to repot a tree?

It is always nice to have extra pots on hand. These training pot are extra deep for root development. They are not ment for larger trees that have established full root. Once the tree gets older and roots become root bound it will be time to thin out the roots and move to thiner pots

They are only 3 inches deep. Not deep enough in my opinion for succulents. I find them not too practical. They look good but not usable. Hope this helps.

Can you grow food / herbs in these? Is it safe? What are they made of?

Yes, I assume you can, since they are built for Bonsai Plants. The material is plastic, the holes in the bottom are fairly large, so you might want to stick some river rocks on the bottom, if growing herbs
