Primary Phonics is a systematic, phonics-based early reading program. This series builds essential literacy skills including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension. Primary Phonics is comprised of 5 sets of storybooks, coordinating workbooks, reference books, teacher s manuals, and an audio story CD for students in grades K-2. The extension More Primary Phonics allows for additional practice with two more sets of storybooks and workbook exercises.Primary Phonics also includes a comprehension component called Thinking about Mac and Tab. The comprehension workbooks follow the same phonetic patterns as the coordinating workbooks and storybooks. The 147 wh- 148 question words (who, what, why, etc.) are introduced as sight words, as students independently work through the series. Students learn to sequence, recognize story elements, use context clues, and refer to storybook pages, among other skills. Each workbook corresponds to a set of Primary Phonics storybooks 1-5. Primary Phonics Workbook 1 reviews the 17 consonants covered in the Consonant Book and then introduces short vowels in two- and three-letter words. Using a patterned series of exercises, it also introduces the sight words is, a, the, on, in, yes, no, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, and black. Exercises involve simple yes or no questions, coloring, copying words below illustrations, filling in missing words in short sentences, and unscrambling words.Storybooks Set 1 reinforces and provides practice with the skills taught in Workbook 1. More Primary Phonics Workbook M1 and the M1 storybooks provide additional practice with the skills covered in Workbook 1. Publisher: Educators Publishing Service Author: Barbara W. Makar Grades: K-2 Format: 80 pages, paperback ISBN: 9-780838-803608 Review: Great buy - I’ve bought this in correspondence with the book series. My child’s school uses the books and I bought them to supplement at home. I love the work book the repitive nature of it is effective and useful. I feel as though this has definitely had a positive benefit for my child who was struggling and is slightly difficult to keep attention. I do not write in the books so I cannot say if the pages bleed or hold up to a learning writer but they are clear easy to read/copy and flow very nicely from page to page. I’ll definitely continue to buy the work books and series levels as we progress through them. Review: Love this set - Since schools have drifted away from phonics I love this workbook. They have the readers that go with each work book. Start with the consonant book and then get workbook 1 and 2. The consonant book allows kid to look at a picture and fill in the first sound. Gradually difficulty is increased. Book 1 works mostly on short vowels and book 2 works mostly on long vowels. After workbook 2, unless your child is stuggling with reading - probably more fun books to read. Also nice because kids can work independently on books.

Great intervention tool for kindergarten
I use this book towards the middle of teaching kindergarten as a supplemental resource. Great for sight word and cvc word practice. It’s excellent for teaching sentence structure too.

No frills effective workbook
My 3-year-old daughter started reading when she was 2 years old, so I was looking for a workbook to supplement her learning. This workbook is great! I'm not an educator, and have not done a ton of research or have compared this to other similar workbooks, but from I can tell, it's very well laid out. The lesson progression makes intuitive sense and holds the attention of my child. I don't like the really colorful books (this workbook is all black and white) because I think they detract from the essence of the lessons. We do about 1 page a day, and she loves it. She just turned 4 and I will soon order workbook 2.

A step by step approach to teach reading
This is an excellent series. (workbooks and accompanying readers) I have used it for years in my grade 1 classrooms helping second language students to learn to read in English. It is also very useful to reinforce weaker readers. I just recently bought it for my young grandson so he can get a head start in learning to read while being home during the pandemic. Btw, there is a teacher’s manual that accompanies this series. I’m not sure if Amazon carries it, but it gives a step by step approach to teaching the program.

Superb Phonics Workbook
Excellent workbook for phonics for short vowel words: cat, hat, pig, wig, cup, mug, hen. They also use them in sentences. We used this in our full day kindergarten program, along with the Primary phonics readers, and they gave an excellent foundation in phonics. Our kindergarten students all scored in the 98-99th percentile in reading on the first grade Stanford Achievement test. We also used Abeka phonics materials after this series - the flash cards, workbooks and readers.

The basics of repeating the foundations
Outside to the simple and easy to follow flow of the workbook it does exactly what's it's intended to. Nothing flashy, just old fashion reinforcement of basics to pronunciation and spelling.

Good for a child struggling with CVCs to work through the book, but nothing I haven't got already from other schemes and in a more engaging format.
