When a person goes to the boss with a problem and the boss agrees to do something about it, the monkey is off his back and onto the boss's. How can managers avoid these leaping monkeys? Here is priceless advice from three famous experts: how managers can meet their own priorities, give back other people's monkeys, and let them solve their own problems. Review: Extremely Helpful for New Managers — A Must-Read for Any Leader - The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey is one of the most practical management books I’ve ever used in my career. It delivers a simple but powerful message: understand who owns the work and who is responsible for managing it. Many new managers struggle with this—tasks get delegated upward instead of downward, workloads get confused, and leaders often find themselves doing the work for their employees rather than guiding them. This book breaks down that dynamic brilliantly through the “monkey” analogy, helping managers see when they’ve accidentally taken on someone else’s responsibility. As a Director, I found this book invaluable. I used its principles with all of my managers and supervisors, and it made a clear difference in accountability, clarity, and team performance. The lessons are straightforward, memorable, and immediately applicable in real-world environments, especially for managers who are still learning how to balance doing the work vs. overseeing it. If you’re leading a team—or developing new leaders—this book is a quick read that pays dividends for years. Review: I gave it to two managers, including my own - With the same easy readability of other titles in the One Minute Manager series, the Monkey is a clear metaphor for taking on the responsibilities of subordinates in overt and subtle ways. I recognized the pattern not only in my own behavior, but also in a manager in my company and another in a non-profit organization. I got a copy for both of them, to help them understand that there's a difference between helping people to live up to their responsibilities and taking on their responsibilities themselves. Good read for anybody, whether they are a manager or someone being managed. Buy it, then give it to someone else who needs it!

must read for managers
If you read One Minute Manager, you'll appreciate how easy & quickly you can read this book. I read the book on a recent flight (book is a fast read). I had to laugh as the author described mistakes managers make when dealing with their subordinates. I recognized mistakes that I was making as I read along. After the flight, my staff saw immediate changes in my management style. I AND they are better for me applying lessons I learned from the book. If you manager people, want them to grow, have more time to concentrate on your important tasks, I highly recommend you read this book. I thought so much of it, I bought a copy for a business associate whom I know to manager personnel. He called to tell me how much he learned while reading the book.

This book will give you time
I am very impressed with this book, and I expect to return it it again and again. It put order to the vague management principles I already understood and provided a format in which to organize my management methods. The amount of time I expect to receive back through better and systematic management was well worth the couple of hours it took to read the book.

Monkeys on your shoulders
Great book that I bought for friend and is my second purchase. Very good read to ensure you understand how you can take on people’s issues, responsibilities etc and those issues are illustrated as monkeys. Would and have bought this again and recommend.
