Hearty flavor
The black rice needs more cooking time then most rices. I put it in the rice cooker when my beans are almost done,in the pressure cooker. As a diabetic, it is another healthier choice. It costs more than most rice and it's harder to find in bulk. I like the short grains. It looks like little glossy gems, when cooked with a little olive oil The taste is a little nutty and savory. The flavor is good with a little salt,on its own. However, it pairs well with other grains. I use it with black and red beans, mostly because it adds flavor to the dish.

Forbidden Rice!
My wife has been put on a low-carb, no-dairy, no-sugar, no-fun diet so we've been looking for new things to work into the dinner rotation. She mentioned Black Rice so I did some research. Wikipedia says it's forbidden and made some mention of sativa. Well alright! Let's give this a go! Before getting too far into this, I'm not a foody. I am NOT a rice connoisseur. While I've eaten a few types of rice, I tend to put rice into one of two categories: trash or edible rice. This rice was squarely in the "edible rice" category. It's not magic rice. It did not change my life to eat this rice. I did not cook it and think, "Dear God, why have you hidden this rice from me for so long?!" It's rice. It looks nice when cooked, so that's fun. I wouldn't try to use it in a hand roll or anything, but it's a fine replacement for the brown rice that was available at the local market. (Don't @ me) Quality: Top notch. Consistently colored and I didn't find any bugs/worms/fingers.. Packaging: All plastic - do better. Pro: Keeps rice in and intruders out. Con: Contributes to the global non-recyclable trash heap. "But Mr Customer, our plastic is special fast degrading, worm friendly, locally sourced, small batch, suffocation free plastic." I'm sure it is. Value: I bought it and didn't cry. There is certainly cheaper rice available. If you want to feed you and yours the forbidden rice, this wouldn't be a bad choice.

Black Rice
Ever had black rice? I did...years ago from the Whole Foods side dishes bar. It was delicious! Black rice is easy to cook with just 3 steps. Black rice has a delicate, slightly nutty flavor profile. That makes it like a blank food canvas that you can make in any dish style you like/want. You can do savory dishes; or a sweet/dessert dish. The cooked texture of this rice is firm, and a bit chewy--not soft or mushy like when white rice is over cooked. The package directions don't tell you to do these things; but you should. 1) rinse with cold water 2-3 times to remove the natural dust from the outside.... don't rinse until water runs clear because you'll strip away it's natural nutrition. 2) add a bit of salt to the cooking pot, because it is a season base for whichever recipe profile you want....or don't for the pure blank canvas result. 3) black rice is better than white or brown rice because it's carbs break down in a slow, even way....so it doesn't give us a fast carb rush that spikes blood sugar.... Google for more health details. I suggest you give it a try. It's the "something different" you can add into your recipe/meal rotation.

Don't follow their cooking instructions
The only reason I'm giving it 3 stars is because the cooking directions are stupid. Ignore the oil, sauté blah blah and just make it like rice. The directions didn't even say to add enough water. If I wasn't watching it, it would have burned.

Black rice, promises, more than white or brown rice
Healthy black rice. I bought it for its health benefits in good taste. Very clean and it did not require washing.
