You can see galaxies and nebulae with the 102, although there won't be a lot of detail. Maksutov-Cassegrains of this aperture are suited better to planetary and lunar viewing. For what you're asking about, larger apertures (150mm, for example) would be better.

I'm extremely new to everything astronomy, but if i were to get this telescope, what additional items would i need for astrophotography?

If anyone is still wondering, I just weighed mine (180mm) and the OTA alone (without finderscope or eyepiece and diagonal) is 17 pounds.

No, mine does not say schotte optical glass. It still performs nicely, but I was very angry when I realized this is a bait n switch product
