Does it really take four hours? That seems like a long time to wait on drinking water while hiking.

It takes 4 hours for it to kill everything, but........... Things like bacteria and viruses are more fragile than other organisms that have an outer "shell". The 4 hour recommendation is so that these tougher organisms are killed as well as the bacteria and viruses. We always filter our water first (MSR Miniworks) which removes 99.99% of bacteria and just leaves any potential virus behind which is why we also use these tablets (many would argue that this is overkill, BTW). Viruses are killed in 20-30 minutes. So---our method is to filter the water first, then drop a tablet in and wait about 20 minutes. (additional recommendation: don't leave your water bottle sitting in direct sunlight while the tablet is working)

Follow expiration date. Toss it, at or after expiration date. I would NOT use it. In this case, where I am, it is 02/20/2020...so toss it.
