Q: Can this switch be connected to a 220V pump to shut the power to pump off when no water in the pipe and how it connect to the water pipe. please help

Umm. ,the first. The switch can be used for that but only to activate a contractor, the switch is not rated for vary many amps,second use a reduction tee. 2x2x1/2. Or so on ,you trim off the excess on the paddle, also 1x1x1/2. Tee ,recommend on the output side of the pump

The model I bought was rated at 120VAC 0.5A or 24VDC 1.5A

Q: This switch is rated to actuate at 2.6gpm water in horizontal flow. Any data what the trigger rate would be in downward cold water stream?

The flow switch is counter balanced to move with gravity assist. I don't believe it will work in a downward flow direction. Horizontal or up flow.

Q: Defective unit? Stays Closed regardless of paddle position. Even disconnecting the wire from the switch body, current still flows.

Must be defective. Purchased many and all work. Switch closes when flow moves paddle.
