The most beguilingly seductive novel to date from the author of The Passion and Sexing the Cherry . Winterson chronicles the consuming affair between the narrator, who is given neither name nor gender, and the beloved, a complex and confused married woman. “At once a love story and a philosophical meditation.” — New York Times Book Review. "Why is the measure of love loss?"
In Written on the Body Jeanette Winterson takes on some fundamental questions: What is love? What is marriage? What do fidelity and responsibility really mean? It is often in examining the extremes that we can find answers. The narrator lives in the extreme - profound restless, intense eagerness, unequivocal passion, turbulent relationships. What can a soul want more than passion - the intense consuming passion that elevates love and life to the umpteenth degree? Passion is the fire of life. Whereas many of us might long for that level of passion and intensity, Winterson not only describes it, but also takes up the question of its sustainability. How can it be sustainable? Can it? Then there are other questions: What does it really mean to truly love another? Should one let the loved one go if it saves their life? If so, can one decide for another? If so, what is life without love? In her brilliant narration, astute observations, sensual descriptions and philosophical musings, Written on the Body celebrates the sensual body and feeds the philosophical mind. Whether it provides answers or not, that is a more complicated question. After all, as Susan Sontag said, "The only interesting answers are those that destroy the questions."

Brilliant!
Jeanette Winterson is one the great writers of the late 20th and early 21st Century, and this is one of her finest books (at least for me). Her prose is poetic and innovative. For the people writing two star critiques and referring to the main character as "he", please read this book again. No where in the book is the narrator referred to as he or she. The fact is that we do not know what the narrator's sex is, and it does not matter. This is only one small insight into the way in which Winterson weaves words into worlds and takes us there. Brilliant!

More of a Meditation
Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson is not really a novel, as much as a meditation on romantic love, sex, and what it means to be an embodied being. There are some neat tricks in the novel. We never find out if the narrator is male or female. So eros becomes free floating, detached from gender. This brings with it limitations. Male and female desire have elements in common, but also, generally, dissimilarities. When the novel actually develops a plot, Winterson’s power wanes. She is not as adept at telling a story as outlining the landscape of human desire. So the end comes with a plop. After some gorgeous prose, we are treated to a happy conclusion that brings little joy.

Graceful
I recommend to anyone who still searches for the literature section. A love story; Winterson never reveals the gender of the narrator, which is a hard thing to do without the prose ever feeling strained. Perhaps, she has demonstrated that love transcends gender. A heady thought. It you like heady thoughts and well-written stories... you can't go wrong with any Winterson.

A song to LOVE. Genuine feelings beautifully expressed
Had I been given the book without a title or the author's name, I would have guessed it was one of Winterson's. A song to LOVE. Genuine feelings beautifully expressed. At moments, poetic prose. After reading the Passion, I tried Written on the Body and will go on to her latest. Unmissable.

a damn good read
if you want a voice that sounds like every other fiction writing hack out there, don't buy this. if you want something different and brilliant, buy it. she is confusing, emotional and stunning. this book doesn't float along, its bumps and bangs and is impossible to put down. she is one of those writers who drops more than one gem that i wish i had come up with. my only complaint is that i was continually trying to figure out the sex of the narrator. she purposely makes it impossible. but that is my problem, not hers.

This book was stolen from a public library
This book was stolen from a public library, it has various labels inside and outside that are used in libraries for classifying books, some of them are half ripped as if someone had tried to delete the evidence. At the end of the book there's also the magnetic label that is used to prevent people from stealing them. I'm speachless.

Written On the Body - Jeanette Winterson
"You'll get over it.." It's the clichés that cause the trouble. To lose someone you love is to alter your life for ever. You don't get over it because 'it' is the person you loved. The pain stops, there are new people, but the gap never closes. How could it? The particularness of someone who mattered enough to grieve over is not made anodyne by death. This hole in my heart is in the shape of you and no-one else can fit it. Why would I want them to?" This work by Jeanette Winterson is simply brilliant. l've never come across a book quite like it! So rich with human emotions, desires, and the inevitable pain of losing someone you love, not because you want to, but because it's necessary for their own well-being. There's something about the way Winterson captures this loss that feels so raw and real, and yet, no matter how much I try to put it into words, nothing I write here will truly do justice to what I felt while reading this book. The entire book feels like a poem. Every sentence seems carefully crafted, full of layers and meanings! But it's not just about the "unrequited love" and its inevitable pain, or all the heavy emotions on display in the book. Winterson also has a way of making you laugh, sometimes unexpectedly, with her sharp wit and humor.
