Great form and function... a lot of spark for its size. I carry one in my Jeep's glove box and another one in my pocket any time I'm out along the river or up in the mountains... Great size for pocket carry.

Needed a small pocket size ferro rod for my Pocket EDC and the Light my Fire brand has always been a reliable source. Small but still capable and able to hold onto easily when using.

This firesteel from Light my fire is a quality made product. I made this purchase because I wanted to include a good quality, no frills ferrocerium rod and striker in a small kit that I could depend on.1. I questioned the cost of this rod and striker because there are other less cost effective options out there, but can you actually put a price on reliability? Thats my reasoning and justification for the purchase. 2. I selected the burnt orange handle because it would be visible (the light green was a bit much for me) if it accidentally fell among the greenery while camping, it could be found easily 3. I have medium size hands and I find the ergonomic thumb handles very comfortable, I have Diabetic nuerapathy so dexterity can be an issue for me some days, but this rod is easy to hold and use 4. I didn't buy this for its whistle application because if you did you might be disappointed. You may be able to use it with practice but in a survival emergency where your life depended on it, there's no time to fiddle with a gimmick. My advice buy a separate whistle that works as such! The whistle could have been engineered better imho so for this reason I took 1 star away. 5. In my case it's very practical as it nestled in my esee survival tin nicely and that's where it's going to live until it's called for duty. Inconclusion, I would definitely make this purchase again despite its cost. Its small enough to fit in my kit but its also stout enough to be handles and reliability is significantly important to me and in a pinch I need the smallest of investments to work just as much as the large ones. This ferro rod generates good sparks, it does what it's intended to and that works for me! Just one handymans honest review. Thx!

My first one has lasted years as you can tell by the wear. Probably hundreds of strikes or more and it is still serviceable. I bought a second one and yes it performs just as well. If you need a six inch or larger ferrocerium rod, you might as well carry a lighter. I have ignited fat wood shavings many times with this “small” rod. Rather than pushing the striker forward on the rod and scattering your tinder, pull the rod towards you to ignite your tinder. Also, new rods come with a coating on them so you need to scrape that off to get a spark.

These are almost always one of the most expensive models but there is good reason for that. The ergonomic grips make them very easy to master whether young or old. We had children as young as 5 have success with lighting fires and also 70+ year old. They guarantees to last 10,000 strikes and will do as long as you show people what one good strike looks like. They can be thin so if people striking from half way I have had them wear uneventfully and snap in middle. But to make sure beginners ha e success and what to build interest further, these (along with some good demonstration/instruction) will definitely bring them success. Work when wet. Great item. They could do with slightly longer cords. If you had big hands then not always enable and easier distance. But we replaced the cords with longer high visibility reflective paracord so that easier to use and if anyone dropped one in low light we could fine easier with a torch. You wont regret one of these
