is the stand robust enough to withstand the pressure from the mashing process? Or is it designed simply to hold the strainer before/after use?

The sieve itself seems quite robust as does the stand, but I'd be wary of applying forceful pressure on any contents. I've done this before with standard stainless sieves and they always break where the mesh is crimped into the rim. On the whole they are not made for what I think you are proposing. In addition the legs of the stand may start to splay if too much pressure is applied. Depending on what you want to mash you'd be better off with a mouli legume.
