Picturepedia, Second Edition: An Encyclopedia on Every Page

My advanced 20 month old Granddaughter owns about 200 books and this is one of her favorite. Our first one arrived damaged and the seller promptly replaced it. This is a super-big, super-heavy, super-quality kids book that provides weeks and weeks of new learning. My Granddaughter (who memorizes her books after a couple of readings) thoroughly enjoys this never-ending source of "new material" provided in an interesting and fun way to learn - pictures and words. Unlike, some kids books, where it is not certain where one topic begins or ends - this book makes smart kids feel smarter by reading and exploring a quasi-adult-level style book which smart-kids thrive on. Topic-to-topic, every section is an adventure. No silly or immature presentations - real-life science and real-time learning. Hundreds of great durable pages with picture quality that penetrants young minds and word-explanations that quickly make sense. This book is guaranteed to be one of your smart-kids favorite books from now until high-school and will probably remain on their book shelve until they are graduated from MIT. Not cheap price-wise and not-cheap quality-wise - your kids education is the key to the future - spend your money on this book and you will be ensured that you have done your best in providing quality learning that will help set your smart-kid apart from average kids in the future. Nothing wrong with being average - but if your kid might have the chance to be above average - hey, why not?

This is an ESSENTIAL book for every child’s library—buy buy and you’ll be so glad you did. My kids have been poring over theirs since age 4 and are still going strong six years later! The large size and visual layout of the pages is so engaging and informative. The book covers everything from types of cheese to categories of sea shells to medieval costumes and geology. We tried the DK Children’s Encyclopedia, but the Picturpedia won hands down for the sheer number of topics it discusses. It’s now one of our favorite non-toy gifts for friends and family. Worth every penny.

Given to a 7 year old. They really like going through all the different pages and learning a bit about everything.

This is such an awesome book! We look at this a lot and we always find something interesting to learn about. My kids have their favorite sections they like to go back and look at again and again. I know we will continue to use this book for years to come when questions arise on various topics.

I absolutely love DK books bc of their actual pictures vs cartoon illustrations you'll find elsewhere. I think it's very important for little Learners to learn and understand what is real before cartoon drawings. I use/d these books primarily to build vocabulary. We started off by pointing at objects and saying the name, then we advanced to us saying the name and she would find and point at the object, and then it was her repeating the words and eventually she would go through and name everything. Anyhow, I purchased this for my daughter when she was 15 months and was starting to outgrow the dk tabbed books, she knew what everything was. This book at 2.5 years is still a hit! She still loves to flip through it and explore what's on the page. Of course there are subjects above her comprehension like the history of the civil war, but the animal pages helped her realize yes, we can recognize a dog but there are many types of dogs and many types of birds etc... We never run out of words to learn with this book! And I love the teaching conversations that evolve from looking through this. I know 100% that these dk books helped develop my my daughter's advanced language skills. Of course I think she's the smartest cookie ever!! But since 2 years old she has spoken regularly in 7-9 word sentences and would even string together multiple sentences to tell stories when Google says normal development of a 2 yr old is just beginning to combine two word sentences like "baby crying." So yes, I recommended this to parents of toddlers!

The pictures are very nice. Most of the summaries by the pictures are relatively objective. However, the summaries in the areas of World Religion, Great Thinkers, Great Leaders, Revolutions, and How life began - to name a few - definitely show an obvious bias in the author. Since these sections are relatively small, I gave 4 stars and not 3. You may want to go over the above mentioned sections with your child as they are reading through them. The summaries in these areas are quite subjective and I believe that some individuals are included in the listings who may not be so deserving and individuals who are deserving are left out. Example: Greta Thunberg and Angela Merkel are listed as Great Leaders, but George Washington and Thomas Jeffersonwere left out.

This is a marvelous book for the curious of any age. I think I must have ordered a used copy that was exposed to some moisture, but all the pages separated well. It was half the new price. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants expansive visual displays rather than lists of stuff from a search engine. The new book price would be well worth it.

I am giving 5 stars as the book itself is great. However, the package came damaged. I was hoping the encyclopedias inside would have survived, but unfortunately, I was wrong. Books should be at least bubble wrapped to be protected.

Amasing and fascinating

As for all their books, Smithsonian delivers first class info and illustrations. Books that follow a child through adolescence and adulthood. Great investment. Will probably be purchasing a fourth one for my grandson!

Livre traitant des sujets diverses et variés, avec beaucoup de photos et un peu de texte. Mes filles (8 e 9 ans) le feuillettent de façon régulière, elles ne cherchent pas un sujet en particulier mais elles y passent pas mal de temps à découvrir les sujets. Pour les adultes aussi, il s'avère très intéressant.

This is a great version of encyclopedia with extensive pictures that make learning interesting for kids. We have an hour of night reading daily exploring 1 topic a day. Written font is small, but the pictures are plenty...
