Reasonably close, but not perfect
If you are looking for a perfect coffee analog that is free of caffeine, this ain't it. The smell is more like subtly sweet, and earthy, not the least bit comparable to coffee. As a result of this the experience is not quite the same (not relying on caffeine by the way). I'm able to use it with my coffee grinder to grind it to a finer grade for use of my preferred brewing methods. The flavor easily blends in with regular coffee, I only notice a reduced punch from the lack of caffeine. I mix it with my normal coffee beans as a way to reduce how much caffeine I'm consuming in a day. First time using chicory root at all, I will need some time to compare to other brands. When using my compressor to help compact the grinds in the brewing basket of my espresso machine, chicory has a tendency to stick to the metal surface (probably because it lacks the national oils that exist within coffee grounds).

Very Good!
Although I have only tried one other brand of chicory, I so like this brand. It is not expensive and the taste is satisfying. K cold brew it. I placea quarter cup of grounds into a filter bag, place that in a quart jar with cold water and let it sit on the counter for 24 hours. I then take out the filter bag, fill the jar with water to the top--to make-up for the displaced filter bag--and store it in the fridge. I can grab a cup anytime and heat it up, or drink it cold in summer time. It is a nice alternative to coffee, and has nutritional value. This is a good product.

A staple in my diet
I like this product alone as a coffee substitute, but I LOVE it mixed with roasted dandelion root. I have a friend who uses 1 tsp. of each to make his "chicory/dandelion coffee". But I find the chicory so dense and strong that I've reduced it to 1/2 tsp. per whole tsp. of roasted dandelion root - for about 10 oz. water. I'm a big enthusiast of dandelion root for it's liver- and kidney-cleansing effects, and of chicory root for it's high inulin content - good for the gut! Oh, and this roasted chicory root made it easy for me to quit drinking coffee a year ago because it gives a robustness to my cup that dandelion root alone is missing. I lived in Italy for many years and was accustomed to espresso strength and density! At times I've run out of dandelion root, and made my "coffee" with 1 full tsp. chicory root per 10 oz. water. One could even imitate espresso by using chicory only and reducing the amount of water. A little of this goes a long way! Really enriches a cup of something hot. And the quality of this organic produce seems excellent. As much as I like this root, and enjoy it as a staple in my diet, I'm a little concerned because it seems to be staining my teeth. It certainly has stained the stainless steel saucepan in which I simmer it. Trying natural tooth whitening methods like oil pulling, brushing with a baking soda brine, sometimes rinsing with a few drops of 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide in a few ounces of water. Not sure whether it's the chicory staining my enamel, or rather that my enamel has become translucent. So I'm doing a remineralizing protocol too, for general tooth health..

There was no aroma like coffee. I don't know if this is normal ...
This is my first time buying Chicory. The packaging isn't air tight or out doesn't seem to be. It reminds me a cheap plastic mailing bag. There was no aroma like coffee. I don't know if this is normal but I'd think it should smell a little roasted. I brewed it. I supposed it tastes ok. I'm drinking this because my stomach was bothering me due to taking naproxen. Since this is my first go around with chicory, I have nothing to compare it to. I chose this because it was organic the shipping was relatively fast and the package looked like foil. Unfortunately the packaging was disappointing and not like pictured. I hope this was helpful. Update: I think I like this coffee better now that I've made a few cops and got the ratio right. I made it way too strong the first time. The second time I mixed in a little coffee and added less chicory. The third time I just did one small teaspoon per 8 oz of water and mixed in a little more coffee and it was much better. I plan on using this half and half with coffee after my stomach repairs itself. I think I'll love it then.

Highly Recommend
I used chicory root almost ten years ago when I need to quit drinking regular coffee. This brand was my favorite at that time. As old habits go, I fell back into my coffee addictions. My gut health amd sleep habits were poor and I have found myself returning to chicory root. I am on my second bag and feeling better. I use my regular coffee maker, sometimes mixing half chicory with my favorite coffee, but mostly going straight chicory to avoid the caffeine. The earthy flavor is excellent!
