High quality german made honing steel. Works perfect and should last forever. I watched a detailed video of how to use a honing steel properly before receiving this honing steel... Wow this honing steel, combined with the proper instruction, produced a razor sharp edge on my knives that cuts through paper easily with just the weight of the blade and no extra force. Love it. I highly recommend.

For some reason, they put an engraved "Mercer" towards the handle end which will negate your sharpening if you aren't careful to avoid it. What were they thinking? I really like my two Mercer knives though, and I think Mercer is a quality company.

I researched how to best sharpen kitchen knives and realized I needed one of these in addition to my whet stone. What a difference this honing rod has made! Apparently, this tool realigns the edge of the blade while the whet stone sharpens it. Both seem to be necessary to achieve that razor sharp edge. This steel was a great deal for the money.

Very nice honing steel. First time I used this on my mercer chefs knife after not sharpening or honing for over 6 months and I could finnally slice tomatoes again, felt great. I will probably sharpen the blade soon but for now the honing steel is keeping the blade nice and straight and its working well.The only negative thing I could say is the handle is very light compared to the weight of the steel because it's plastic, but still feels like it's durable so not an issue for me.

I am astounded that this steel has so many 5-star reviews when it has one design flaw that seems to negate all of the positives. The steel rod is stamped with “SOLINGEN GERMAN” and the lettering is raised above the groves. This means if you don’t have the steel turned just right and your blade hits the lettering, it makes a terrible sound and becomes obvious you’re damaging the knife’s edge. I can’t comprehend why a manufacturer would put anything on the honing surface that could potentially damage the knife’s edge. It is true, you can rotate the lettering out of the way, but the idea that every time I pick up this steel, I have to find the lettering and make sure it’s out of the way before I can start honing seems ridiculous to me. The other steels I have are laser etched with the company’s name so there’s no damage to the groves, and I can simply pick them up and start honing without worry.

Item is so as described in the picture. I bought this to keep my "Mercer Cutlery Genesis 6-Piece Forged Knife Block Set, Steel/Black" set (also bought from amazon) totally sharp and neat. This item was so great that I showed it to my mother, she fell in love of it and how sharp it leaves the knives without any outstanding effort that she stole it from me and now I'm forced to buy another one. I will definitely recommend this item.

Yes,I’m a Mercer culinary fan boy. I’ve yet to be disappointed by any of their products. This steel is thicker than my old one and a much overdue upgrade
