The New Cambridge Shakespeare appeals to students worldwide for its up-to-date scholarship and emphasis on performance. The series features line-by-line commentaries and textual notes on the plays and poems. Introductions are regularly refreshed with accounts of new critical, stage and screen interpretations. This second edition of Macbeth provides a thorough reconsideration of one of Shakespeare's most popular plays. In his introduction, A. R. Braunmuller explores Macbeth's immediate theatrical and political contexts, particularly the Gunpowder Plot, and addresses such celebrated questions as: do the Witches compel Macbeth to murder; is Lady Macbeth herself in some sense a witch; is Macduff morally culpable? A new and well-illustrated account of the play in performance examines several cinematic versions, such as those by Kurosawa and Roman Polanski, as well as other dramatic adaptations. Several possible new sources are suggested and the presence of Thomas Middleton's writing in the play is also proposed. Review: Excellent edition - Canโt beat the NCS editions. Quality printing, great footnotes and textural analysis. Review: The NCS never disappoint - The New Cambridge Shakespeare are my go-to for studying and reading Shakespeare. Iโm a composer and often analyse his works to musicalise. When preparing an operatic libretto on the Bardโs works I go through several editions to help me out on my work. But the NCS are the ones I find most helpful and complete. There are plenty of notes on the text which are at the bottom of the page (which means you donโt have to flip back and forth) and the different reading of the Quarto and Folio are always clear. If youโre looking for one single edition of Macbeth (or a Shakespeare play in general) donโt look further than NCS.

Great value for money!
This book has a very clear layout and each page consists of the play as well as key information (such as modern translations and historical meanings) at the bottom of the page. It also has an introduction which has useful information in it which can be used at both GCSE level and A Level. I ordered a second hand copy which came very quickly and was in excellent condition considering it had been preowned.

Sound is weak
Maybe I got the only set that is muffled for most of the playing time, but this set of CD's is difficult to hear unless you are right next to it with the volume at full blast. This makes it a poor choice for the classroom or the car. The quality of the production is excellent; the sound just can't be adjusted loudly enough to listen to easily.

Foul is fair and fair is foul!
One of the best Shakespeare's plays! The information is very useful and helpful to really catch the aim of the play!
