A flexible and well-featured portable CD player which includes a DAB+ & FM radio
I have been looking for a player like this for a while and when this Philips AZB500 was featured as an Amazon Prime Day Deal my decision was easily made. It is a well featured and nicely made player that can play CD-DA, CD-RW and CD-R discs as well as regular CDs, and has shuffle and memory functions to make disc playing more interesting. As well as playing CDs this model features a DAB radio with the newer DAB+ included for flexibility and future stations, plus FM for legacy and local stations. The maximum volume is not as loud as you might expect from a player of this size – only one Watt per channel - but it features a Dynamic Bass Boost button to improve the sound at lower levels. There is a 3.5mm audio-in jack socket, but no headphone socket for private listening – the unit is straightforward to set up initially and instructions are supplied in many different languages. Although there is no traditional carrying handle there is a recess at the rear where your fingers fit nicely to carry the player with the speakers facing downwards, and for extra portability it can be powered by six C size batteries when not connected to mains power. The Philips brand name is used here under license by Hong Kong based Multimedia Displays who also make Philips computer monitors in the far east, and Philips TVs in the Netherlands. If this model hadn't been such good value on the day I would probably have chosen a Sony or Roberts model instead – but as it is I am pleased with this Philips player and use it regularly in the kitchen at present. Five stars at the price I paid but even at the regular price it is well worth considering and offers good value at under sixty pounds.

CD play with basic Digital Radio
Plays good old fasion cds and modern Digital Radio. The controls are basic and minimalistics but does the job. It provides a good sound but nothing special. For the price it is a nice to use outside in the sun shine or inside. But you get what you pay for it is not the super base boom box nor high quality sound range. Summing it up I am really pleased with the product it gives me radio and a CD player to play my CD collection yet have the Digital radio.

NOT RECOMMENDED!
Having bought a cheaper CD/Radio player a couple of years back which was of very poor quality (I gave it away) decided to buy a reputable branded CD player at much higher price expecting to get better value for the higher price. It was not to be! The unit is reasonably made but sound quality is poor, the mains lead is very difficult to fit into the back of the unit, like trying to put a cork back into a wine bottle, and worst of all the LCD readout is so faint it's nearly impossible to read. As you rely on this to check what function is selected it makes the whole unit very very difficult to operate. Not good enough to carry the Philips branding. Unit was returned the day after receipt.

Smallish radio/CD player with average sound
I'm currently carrying out a series of jobs in my conservatory and garage and have been listening to the radio while doing them but I suddenly realised that I'd also like to listen to music but that I haven't got a portable CD player at the moment. I presumed I'd be able to get a small, neat portable CD player but such a thing doesn't seem to exist (I realise that they've been superseded by smart speakers etc) and I was rather surprised to be greeted by a series of 'ghetto blasters' some of them still with cassette tape players!?! This Phillips CD/DAB/FM radio looks like the smallest neatest of what is available but it still looks rather old-fashioned. It is only 2x 1watt so you are not going to be using it to provide music for your raves or even family get togethers and the sound is fairly thin even with the DBB (dynamic bass boost) on. As with lots of things it comes with a printed quick start guide and for more detailed instructions you have to go on line. Playing CDs is straight forward with the top-mounted CD player having to be manually lifted up to insert the CD. The rotary volume control is on the side of the machine together with a slider that gives you off/CD/radio, with another slider in the other side for FM or DAB, while on the front we have the play controls for the CD and also the selectors for the radio stations. It also has a audio in socket on the back so you can plug in MP3 players, iPods etc. Everything feels very 'plasticy' - not surprising as it is! I opted for this Phillips model because I hoped it would be better than cheaper makes that I had never heard of but I'd say that everything about this radio/CD is average, from the actual sounds, to the design and to the ease of operation - but I suppose many would say that this is to be expected when you are paying an average price. However, I expected better from Phillips, for example the 'feet' are smooth plastic bumps on the bottom rather than rubber feet so that when I was using it on a window sill as I pressed the buttons to operate the radio it slid along and I had to hold it down before I could get it to work.
