What does the mallet weigh?

The entire pkg, bags and all, is 1.17 lbs -- I didn't find the mallet uncomfortably "heavy" at all. A young kid could easily use it, let's put it that way.

Do you need to wash the bags before using them the first time?

These are ready to use. I have never washed them before their first use. You will have to wash them eventually.
