desertcart.com: A Dream Called Home: A Memoir: 9781501171437: Grande, Reyna: Books Review: Heartwarming and Insightful - Reyna Grande speaks to us in the first person, making you feel she is sitting in the room with you and sharing her story over a cup of coffee. This is an easy read that covers difficult topics concerning the issues faced by immigrants both before and after their flight to the United States. I learned so much from Reyna as her story unfolded. She not only shares the obvious roadblocks immigrants, both legal and illegal, face as they try making honest lives here, she also shares the hidden conflicts that both break and bring together families as they try to navigate lives in their new country. I shed a tear or two of happiness for the author towards the end. They were tears of relief and of joy for her. I wont tell you why. Read the book for yourself to find out. And thank you, Reyna Grande, for finding a way to share your story. You fought hard, against all odds, to make your way. And your story (which I know is also representative of countless others before and after you) deserves to be heard. Review: Beautiful book! - This book is well written, and provides the reader with a powerful portrait of the life of the author. Strong themes of the tragedy and resolve of Reyna and her family on their immigration journey. An easy yet compelling read that reveals an individual’s struggles and triumphs as she pursues her own dreams. I enjoyed this book.

i had to read part 2!
i read both of Reyna Grande’s and memoirs within a few days. I am glad she wrote a sequel. Her story is inspiring, but also sad. Knowing how she and so many others suffer and how she was able to break the cycle of violence and poverty. Her sister Mago’s love and dedication to Reyna and her brother was amazing-perhaps it was because, as the eldest, she had experienced loving parents before both their mother and father went away. Reyna Grande’s honesty and insight about her journey as a Latina immigrant, as a woman searching for herself and for family is a wonderful read. Read her first book “The Distamce Between Us” first.

Amazon service met expectations. Book topic a bit depressing and politically charged.
This book was easy to find and was delivered as promised. This book was required reading for a college class. I personally did not like the author writting style, topic and political agenda.

Both Fascinating and Frustrating at the Same Time
This book was heart wrenching and compelling to read, but it made me frustrated with the author/main character sometimes when she made certain decisions. This book is a great window into what it is like to be born into the extreme poverty and hopelessness that so many people must deal with, especially those born south of the US border. I think I now understand why so many choose to take the step of crossing the border into the US, despite the many risks. Reading this book is a timely, eye opening exercise in empathy. It should be required reading before voting on immigration legislation.

My home, my story
This book was a required read for my humanities class and it was a wonderful discussion around immigration, culture and life. I look forward to reading more of Grandes work now that I’ve related so much to her story and her life in Mexico and America. It was almost like I was reading words from my own journey even though I was born here. Thank you so much!

Beautiful and inspiring
This is one of my favorite books for so many reasons! I read this book in one day from cover to cover. Beautifully written, honest and raw. As a first generation college student I found myself pausing to remember my own journey and sitting with the nostalgia that this book resurfaced in me.

Beautiful and inspirational!
This book is the sequel to "The Distance Between Us" by Reyna Grande so I decided to buy it to hear the rest of Reyna's story. In this sequel, Reyna tells her story as a first-generation college student, meeting her husband, and starting a family. Her feeling and thoughts are presented throughout the book in is a raw and pure form that makes it difficult to put the book down. Reyna is an example that despite all the challenges that life throws at you, with persistence and faith in yourself, your dreams can come true! I would recommend to anyone who wants an insight into what is life for immigrants. Also, it is a great read for those who enjoy reading Chicano/a books!

This book is very oh woe me my life is very hard.. Well the author made her own life much more difficult by her own choices.. SPOILER ALERT She buys a house in a rough neighbourhood (she won by a lottery system and put her name down for a house she hadn’t seen..) and complains. Right on. Complains about her toxic relationships, but willingly goes back to a guy just to have a baby with him? I’m sorry I don’t see why this book is highly rated. She obviously went through a hard time and has found herself but I didn’t really like this writer by the end of this memoir

A true story, told in a very unique way. The plot is great as we wonder all along what will happen to this little girl. It includes many little stories in one, each one more impressive ou incredible than the previous one. The author did a wonderful job telling her own story, a very moving story.
