Portable RV Smart Surge Protector, Black, 50 Amp

I have a 30 Amp system, but when you are running the AC, watching Satellite TV, making coffee and then kicking on the microwave... Oops there goes the power. I use the remote LED readout to monitor my Amperage now, so I know what combination of devices I can operate at one time and what I can't. This has helped dramatically to stop breakers from popping and the Satellite Box from restarting (15 Min to watch TV again). It also tagged a bad wiring job at an RV park. We moved to another spot and the park manager called out maintenance on the bad utility box. So it does the job, recommend looking at the numerous U Tube Vids that cover installation before you tackle it yourself. I thought it was simple, but others may not agree.

I bought the EMS-HW50C to wire into my 5th wheel trailer. I also have a 7kw Onan generator. I wanted this to monitor both pedestal and generator power. This requires it be mounted after my transfer switch but before the panel. My transfer switch is located inside a tiny space after crawling deep into the storage bay. I could’nt even fit my shoulders in there much less get the transfer switch apart and wire this EMS in. My only option was to pull out the main panel that is mounted inside a cabinet in the bathroom and remove the 6 3 wire cable from the Main panel and extend it to a shelf directly above the cabinet. This required some butt splices with screw terminals on either end be installed inside a plastic box and taped off to prevent shorts and was mounted inside the main panel cabinet and extended up to a high shelfdirectlyb above the main panel cabinet. This EMS was then mounted up there and wired and a return 6 /3 cable with ground was returned back down through the shelf and into the cabinet and wired back up to the main panel. The cable, connectors, romex clamps, tape, and various cable grommets, etc, amounted to a further 97 dollars and about 10 hours to install not including travel and buying time. It was not a hard job but required some tight work inside the cabinet that housed the main panel. All else was straight forward. The directions were fairly clear with the exception of the arrow on the coils around the output leads. I couldn't find any arrows. It turns out that both coils are sealed with black RTV and the stamped arrows were obscured by smeared RTV during assembly. Luckily, it was mentioned by another installer on the same unit on youtube, otherwise I would have to placed a call to Progressive. The unit works as described, however, the current reading is way over reading amp draw by a factor of double on both phases of power as verified by my own clamp on amp meter. I’ll call them tomorrow regarding this issue. My working on this unit leaves me somewhat concerned about the actual engineering of this unit. Its not hard to determine actual amp draw and the fact thats it’s not even close, is disturbing. I also have questions regarding the stand alone readout. The cable attaches to the bottom of the readout rather then the back, meaning the data cable is always seen after mounting. Why? This also screams of poor engineering or just carelessness. If you are concerned about the appearance of your installation and of those who can’t run the connection from behind the readout, offer both input cable locations so the final finished appearance is preserved.I celebrate well engineered products and abhor poorly executed ones. This has all the earmarks of a typical offshore made product despite its being engineered here, but, this is just my opinion. I’ll know more after I call progressive. UPDATE 2/24/2020. I called Progressive Industries and talked to Brad in tech support. After telling of my over amp reading. He immediately offered two options. Send the whole unit back for a new one or replace the logic board and coils. Our conversation confirmed their concern for their product and without hesitation offered two solutions. Send the whole unit back or install a new logic board and coils. I opted for a new board and coils. I’m impressed with their customer service. The new board and coils should be here in about a week. He also said that the reading on amps is courtesy and would not affect the performance of the HW50C but also agreed that something is wrong and should be fixed. Thank you Brad and Progressive industries. 2nd update: 3/29/20. I finally received my new logic board and new coils. Some snafu in shipping at progressive. I removed the coils and circuit board and replaced them. The amp reading is better then before but still off some from my clamp on readings but close enough to call it good. That was easy. I also remounted the unit after my first trip out. It does hum some because of the relay and had it hard screwed down to the shelf in the bathroom. It was just too noisy at night. I bought 4 rubber donuts about an inch across and 1/2 inch high and 4 rubber covered washers and screwed it down again. Ah, the sound of silence. You might want to keep that in mind depending on mounting location.

I can feel the quality difference compared to others. I returned a different brand and bought this one instead, and sure glad I picked this one. Everything about it seems to be higher quality. The entre case feels like better grade plastic and not cheap...even the cover looks to be a thicker plastic. And I was pleasantly surprised by some additional features that I wasn't even aware it had. There is a weather-strip where the cover fits around your power cable to seal and protect it. And it came with a metal security plate built onto the plug, so you can run a security cable through and lock to the post to prevent theft. It's hands down a much better constructed product than my previous one. Highly recommend!

This is the best of the best. Just plug in and go!!! You never have to worry about someone taking it from you. It takes a little time to install but it is worth it.

Recently we were camping at a RV park during a bad Florida afternoon thunderstorm. The park lost power for about 20 seconds. The next day I heard the RV campground office lost a computer and A/C due this storm. We however suffered no equipment loss. I highly recommend a Progressive surge protector. Money well spent.

This would have prevented me having to replace my inverter in my travel trailer if i would have bought it sooner. work's great and has never failed

After listening to my friend spend thousands of dollars due to a power surge I installed this product and now feel confident that if a power surge should occur I will be protected. Well worth the money

I wired into my motor home so when we travel I don't have to worry about miss wired electric posts or voltage drops causing problems with my electronics.

Purchased the SSP-XL model hoping it would cover surges as well because of its name. Short answer, no. Many people think it would (check amazon answers) but they are wrong. It only checks the pedestal / wiring but it never shuts off the power in the case of a surge. Here is the answer I received from the manufacturer: "Voltages between 132v-300v is considered Hi voltage and any voltage below 104v is low voltage the SSP DOES NOT protect from either one. The SSP only indicates that there is an issue with the pedestal or the power by a light and never shuts power off."

I have been a seasonnal at the same campground for 4 years and occasionally i go to other campground for my vacations .Last year I was away and the compressor on my AC stop working on my 3 years old travel trailer.I had to change the entire unit ,this year I've decided to install this fixed surge protector on my RV,it took me more time to decide where to put the display screen than the device it self.Once installed everything worked fine I could see the voltage, amps and Hertz. In the peak demand of electricity during a heatwave the voltage went under 104 volts on a supposedly 120volt 30 amps circuit. The device did exactly what it is supposed to do and turned off my RV power. Two minutes later the electricity went on and went down to 100 volts the device shut down the power again.I called my campground manager and told her that they had and issue with their electricity, so they called a professional electrician and he made a lot of tests on the lines and came to the conclusion that the wires on my section were too small and needed to be changed.I believe that's what broke my AC initially, the campground owners will change the power lines as per the electrician recommendations.During one of my trips most of the campgrounds had sufficient power only one during the night went over 130 volts and the device shut down the power on my RV.Yes I Recommend this device it is a good investments for protecting all the electrical devices. I'ved experience low voltage to high voltage,Yes this device Works.

This was one of the first things that I installed in the trailer. I liked it because it was inside, without the risk of theft. We installed it in our Rockwood Roo 183 and it has saved us at bad campsites more times than I can count. We have had neighbors complain about bad electricity and even had one camper tell us that some of their appliances wouldn't work anymore, after this threw an error due to low voltage and protected us. I wouldn't want to plug in without one after seeing what a mess the electricity is like at campgrounds. The only downside is that since you have to install it in the trailer, it may be a difficult place to install it.

Decided to get some protection for my travel trailer after my daughter had the misfortune of having to replace her 30 amp power cable and her converter due to a faulty power pedestal in a campground. Liked the features of the hardwired unit. Looked at a few videos on You Tube and Progressive Industries website and found the installation very easy. Instructions were very clear and easy to follow. Plugged the trailer into shore power and the display worked as expected.Unit arrived in a couple of days and was packaged very well.
