Product Description Ian McEwan s spare and unsettling first novel has become a remarkably sensitive and eerily beautiful film. In a situation reminiscent of Cocteau s Les Enfants Terribles, four recently orphaned children live in a house in the middle of nowhere and create their own alternative lifestyle, hoping that the authorities won t find their mother s concrete-buried corpse and split them up by taking them into care. The youngest withdraw into their own private worlds of diary-scribbling and cross-dressing, while teenagers Jack and Julie begin a hesitant sexual relationship, driven by curiosity but hindered by immaturity. Stanley Kubrick s former assistant Andrew Birkin specialised in adapting complex novels: he also wrote the screenplays for The Name of the Rose and Perfume. His only feature won Best Director at Berlin, and he added an incestuous frisson of his own by casting his son and niece (his sister Jane s daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg) as two of the siblings. Special Features: Director and star feature commentary and introduction, additional footage, screen tests, poster designs and Bernd Lepel s shooting album Review A positive triumph --The Guardian

The Cement Garden.
Overall I found the film rather depressing. Not only the lethargy of the family involved, but the squalid condition in which they seemed to be comfortable, inside and outside of that extremely ugly house. All the actors were very good in their roles, which could well be down to the director as well, and the sexual content was handled and filmed with sensitivity.

Arrow Films release of THE CEMENT GARDEN
I already have the previous DVD by VCI which is framed at 4.3 aspect ratio. I have just watched the Arrow Films DVD (2008) release Which is framed at something like 1.78 (IMDB states 1.66)and contains some interesting extras. However the picture quality falls short of the VCI release in terms of definition of fine detail'. A shame really. An excellent film - if only the Criterion people could get hold of it ! !

Disappointing
This film in the main is four youngsters with very average acting ability talking to each other. It tries to be controversial but it's amateurish, and the whole thing would have benefitted from a good dose of surrealism. Nothing justifies the 18 classification and I don't recommend it.
