Original Doan, works great lasts a lifetime
I received the Doan Original as shown, via "ACME Approved". It arrived in a padded shipping envelope, in a Ziploc baggie without retail packaging. I mention this since it appears others have received the wrong item. Mine is 3" Long x 1" Tall x 3/8" Thick. It weighs 1.5 oz. on my digital scale, with the small chain attached, 1.4 oz. without the chain. It comes with a small sheet of instructions. This fire starter is a very long lasting piece of equipment you'll be able to count on for the rest of your life. The magnesium portion of this starter will make thousands of fires. The sparker works well and generates sparks that easily light the Magnesium. I've used mine to light several fires, the sparks quickly light the magnesium pile. It burns very hot and easily lights your kindling. I strongly recommend building a small "birds nest" of kindling and then placing your Magnesium shavings inside of that nest. This is easiest to do by scrapping your magnesium filings onto a piece of paper which can then be manipulated to get them into the birds nest kindling pile. Surround your kindling by larger wood and your fire will quickly grow. Using this with my pocket knife quickly dulls the blade, so consider either keeping an older knife around for this purpose, or attaching a piece of old hack saw or similar piece of metal to use as a scraper. To get the shavings off the bar easiest, hold your knife/tool at a 90 degree angle to the metal and draw it down slowly. You're not trying to carve it but use an edge to scrape off small shavings. They blow around easily so do your best to get out of the wind while gathering your shavings. Since I plan to have this for a lifetime, and IF I ever actually need it in a survival situation, I want to know I can count on it. I felt it was worth the few extra dollars to get the US made brand name version of known quality. 5 stars, it's a great tool, great to keep in a grab and go kit.

Excellent Fire Starter
Ordered mine through Trail Explorers. It is a genuine Doans Machinery Starter. I've carried one for over 20 years & have never had it fail when you follow the directions. It starts fires...period. Doesn't kill zombies or mix you a banana daiquiri. One can make a scraping/striker tool from a broken hacksaw blade, small bastard file or cheap "pen" knife. Comes with a short key chain. Only thing I add to mine is a small plastic business card pouch to keep it clean when stored in vehicle tool boxes. Great little item when your "Bic" has leaked out of fuel. Recommend it and the vendor highly.

Back Up Fire Starter
This is old reliable. If you are looking for this item you know how to start a fire without matches. The shaving for the magnesium on this is easy. You do not have to struggle like some other cheap knockoff. Let's face it, when you need to start a fire you do not need to be fumbling with some sharp instrument in the dark. Well made. I have several around the house and one is my bugout bag.

Genuine Doan Mach. Magnesium Firestarter
The item sold by Trail Explorers is indeed a genuine Doan Machinery Inc magnesium firestarter. The item came packed just like the military ones - heavier gauge plastic baggie with an illustrated instruction sheet. Having owned and used genuine military Doan firestarters for years, I can verify this item is the real deal just minus the military NSN number and patent data. The US military now issues the "Spark-Lite" firestarter and a packet of wetfire tinder since it can be used more easily one-handed - an important consideration for aircrew in particular who do often suffer injury bailing out or ejecting from a damaged aircraft. With practice, the magnesium firestarter can be used one handed (well, one hand plus a knee or a foot) but it's not easy. Despite the requirement for a sharp knife and a second hand, the Doan firestarter is an excellent choice - a ferro rod with a built-in source of waterproof and wind resistant tinder. Magnesium shavings are an effective means of starting a fire in poor conditions, but in windy areas, the shavings must be protected and sheltered lest they blow away. The same conditions will make any traditional tinder more difficult to light, so personal skill, experience at fire making and common-sense comes into play. There are reviews from other purchasers who are having trouble with the Doan firestarters. For them, here are the rules for using a Doan magnesium firestarter. Follow them and it will work every time: 1. You need a quarter-sized pile of shavings. This will almost guarantee that your other tinder and your kindling will burn. 2. To ignite the shavings you need to hold the "sparking insert" at a 45 degree angle to the surface you're resting it on. 3. The bottom of the insert must be within about 1 inch of the pile of shavings. 4. Your knife must be sharp. 5. Drag the blade down the WHOLE length of the sparking insert. This will be necessary to get a good shower of sparks onto your magnesium shavings in poor conditions. A note on the use of knives with these tools - These firestarters are a military item designed to be used with the EDGE of the blade of an Ontario "Jet Pilot" USAF survival knife. Most modern ferro-rod firesteels are designed to spark from the back of the blade, but this item is an exception to that rule. It may work with the back of the blade, but probably not first-time. This may be a little controversial, but in an emergency and you're under stress, use the lower portion of the sharp edge of your blade - not the back. If your $300 bushcraft or combat knife's edge is worth more to you than fire in a survival situation, then for you it may be a good idea to prepare a piece of carbon steel hacksaw blade and attach it to the firestarter with the included length of beaded chain or some gutted 550 cord. Or alternately, you can take a grinder or Dremel tool to the spine of said overpriced knife to create a decent sparking surface. For the record, I use my Doan firestarter with my Leatherman Sidekick since the back edge of the saw blade is kind of sharp and unfinished. It can be used to shave the magnesium as well as strike the sparking insert and do it all while the Leatherman is closed up. In conclusion, it's a great item, but it can take some prior practice for it to be used effectively. The one sold by Trail Explorers is a genuine Doan firestarter - just without military markings since they aren't manufactured for the US military anymore. Five stars from me.

Doan Magnesium Bar
It is important to carry several different ways to start a fire and a magnesium bar is part of my kit for a couple of reasons. They are very simple in construction with the ferro rod and the magnesium block making up the unit. There is very little that can go wrong with this set up...you can drop it in water, step on it, sit on it or smash it against a rock and it is still going to work. They provide an ignition source and tinder in one package and that is hard to beat. Attach a cheap hacksaw blade and you have a striker to throw sparks at natural tinder to start a fire and when the conditions are not optimal you can scrape off some magnesium and ignite it at 5400 degrees to give marginal tinder a much needed boost. This tool, however, doesn't replace basic knowledge and skill. You still need to gather good tinder and have the abilty to build a proper fire. Practice in your backyard on a summer day when you have a cold beer next to you and good food on the grill. For God sake, don't wait until you are 5 miles from camp, lost, with 30 minutes of daylight left and snow starting to fall before you take it out of the package and try to figure out how the thing works. As with anything, the more you practice the better off you'll be. I have purchased other brands in the past and have started fires with them just fine but the quality of the Doan's bar is far above the other brands. For virtualy the same price of the competitors, there is a big difference in performance. The magnesium is a much higher concentration and is easier to scrape and the ferro rod offers a much greater surface area for striking. I highly recommend you purchase the Doan's bar. Good luck to you and happy trails!

Correction, I still love them after 20+ years
Bought a bunch of them over 20+ years ago, before they were purchased by the Big Bunch by the military, and a lot cheaper. Work where the Chinese imports don't. Scraping with a knife works OK. I've tried the piece of hacksaw blade and a el cheapo 6 in file. I like the file best because it lets you keep the block even and not wind up with a gouge in the center of the block. The second best is the hack saw blade. Because the ends of the blade almost never get used, you can break off 2-3 inches and have two scrapers with sharp teeth and a hole to attach it to the magnesium block with some string, etc.

High quality product. Not as good as MagSlab though.
I recently bought a Emergency Fire Starter which arrived and I was shocked to find out was a knockoff Chinese product that was basically fireproof aluminum. That's right fireproof. I found a video comparing that product and the original DOAN magnesium starter, and I was shocked ... even lighting the other stuff with I lighter wouldn't work. I checked the item on Amazon that I bought and the comments and discovered that the ones that shipped from SE (seller) were DOAN, and the ones that shipped from Amazon were knockoffs that didn't work (thus very mixed reviews). So I replaced those defective starters with 1 DOAN MACHINERY Magnesium Fire Starter And 1 MagSlab Magnesium Fire Starter They are both genuine and produce magnesium shavings that burn white hot for a good length of time. The only thing I could say different about them is that the MagSlab is a little bit softer and thus easier to shave quickly.

knock off. NOT genuine issue from Doan. [Updated]
I ordered the "Doan Machine and Equip..." mag bar from Trail Explorers Outpost and it appears to be a knock off. It has Doan impressed on one face as listed but DOES NOT have the patent # or the NSN for military ordering. Additionally, it weighs a bit lighter than the genuine issue ones. I would recommend avoiding this one. Will cost too much to return. Going to relegate to a drawer and experiment with it. [Update] I have experimented with it and the one I have in my hand is NOT a legit mag bar. While it has the Doan stamp on it I would not purchase one until I saw pics of both sides which have writing on them. I shaved off a good pile and had sparks land all in it and around it with very poor results. The size of the pile should have blazed and it did not. Blowing on it just put it out. There is no doubt that the bar has magnesium in it but it seems to be a poor mix. It was hard to shave in good sized chunks (using the blade perpendicular to the bar and scraping) as compared to my known good bar. Don't try to shave chunks off like whittling. I am not sure the seller is even aware that this is probably a knock off so I wouldn't send a scathing e-mail or call if I were you. Just let them know. Mine came in a plastic bag and not in the packaging shown in the pics. Not a big deal just including for full disclosure. I hope this helps. Buyer beware. Lndcrsn
