Hi, thank you for contacting CRAFTSMAN. the level is not something that will work differently as long as the surface is horizontal and flat, if the surface has different characteristics, it will be imprecise.

Does it find studs through tile? For example in a shower?

I could not make mine work at all. The man remodeling my house, also could not detect studs. I do not recommend.
