first tried for a 3/4" dia hole in pressure treat pine. my 18 volt drill with a relatively new battery, full charge, could not product enough torque. the drill was enough for 1/2" hole in pressure treated and 5/8" hole in regular wood. i chucked the 1" bit into my drill press and it was the preverbal "hot knife through butter". if i need a more portable solution for larger holes i will be digging out my old corded drill. if you have them in right drill they can't be beat. Update - after using the smaller bits in my handheld drill and larger ones in my drill press, i have to go looking for a new set. many of my applications are for holes partially through the material. once these bit bite, they take off and i found it impossible to control depth.

Ok, spade bits generally work pretty well. These are in a whole different category! The way the tip is made makes the bit pull into the wood and do the work for you. The only issue I had is they pull so well and I was just making a counter sunk hole of about 1/4" in and they wanted to keep going. I had a hard time getting the bit back out instead of drilling the whole way through. Wow, they went through a 1 1/4" piece of IPE in seconds. These are great and highly recommended and only a few dollars more than the cheap bits.
