Nice thermometer. Works well if used properly. The wire attached to the unit needs as much of it as possible outside in order to registerr properly. It is best to have the thermometer sitting on the inside window sill and most of the wire with the temperature probe outside. If too much wire is inside, the temperature will register higher or lower than it actually is, dependington on the seasons.. Set the unit to F for the American unit of measure. It register outside temperature, and with e a push of a button inside too. Good value for a durable device. We had one for years until a storm ripped the siding off the house and cut the cord. This purchase is a replacement.

Although advertised and marketed for home use, I re-engineered this as an inside-outside car thermometer. The installation didn't require cutting into the dash, or a funky looking 12v cigarette lighter hook-up (although, one can tap into the fuse-box). The readout size is good for old eyes. How to mount? Some of the others use velcro, so I stuck two small strips on the back, leaving it clear for the AAA battery changes. You should also leave a few extra inches of wire play for battery changes, too. Anyways, voila with the velcro stick. No, it's not uber-solid, but under normal street driving conditions it's not going to fall off the dash. I also lengthened the wire for the outside temp sensor (another 15" to reach an area in front of the radiator--add more if you want the option of experimenting with the sensor location). It's very fine strand wire, so be careful in stripping the insulation off. (I'd have to guess at the gauge.) Twist and solder wires for best connection, insulate with shrink tube and then seal with silicon or silicon grease. (You can figure this out, right?) Installation time was roughly an hour, because I'm old and particular about things. Add another hour for the soldering and relocating of the outside sensor (for the same reason). I'm sure others could whip through this job more quickly. [Note: Handle the sensor with care. Enough said.] This may sound like a lot of work, but again, nothing compared to cutting out your dashboard and leaving a gaping hole if you're not happy with it. Sensor reading for inside the car and outside is great. Accuracy of the two sensors was tested inside the house and both were within a .1-.2* of each other. Close enough for me. Although brand B*ll was smaller, and almost the same price depending on the unit, I'm happier with my AcuRite conversion. This thermometer design may not work for every car interior, but it looks great on my wife's gray dashboard (2004 Ford Focus). It's rounded on the edges and goes well with the vent shapes. I don't expect it to last forever, but if I get a few years out of it, good enough for $12.

I was disappointed. The probes for indoor/outdoor thermometers I'd bought in the past were in waterproof capsules about 5mm in diameter. This one had its probe in a rubber case 10mm wide, designed to be nailed to a surface. The extra mass would mean a slower response. The width would require a bigger hole in the wall. Fastening it to a surface (instead of using a standoff as supplied with other thermometers) would mean it wasn't reliably measuring the air temperature. Worse, the rubber case wasn't watertight. Moisture can raise the reading of a digital probe several degrees. I removed the case and coated the sensor with epoxy cement. Both the indoor and outdoor readings were about a degree high from freezing to body temperature. That's closer than some thermometers. I put the outdoor probe a couple of feet below the eaves. In three years, I've had moisture trouble only once. On a rainy day with lots of blowing mist, it read 4 degrees high. When it dried, it returned to normal. Some digital thermometers become very inaccurate. After 3 years, this one still reads a degree high, inside and out, and it's still on the original battery. I was pleased enough to buy another. The new one is correct within a degree, inside or out. I'll try some shoe-repair glue to see if it gives me a better seal than epoxy. Update: For years, I've used my second AcuRite primarily to monitor the output temperatures of my central heating/AC. It sits on a table with the probe in a vent. My first AcuRite had been in service seven years as my indoor/outdoor thermometer when it began reading about 4 degrees high, both indoors and out. I looked at what Amazon had. I considered getting a dual-display model, but in this application it could be confusing. I bought a third AcuRite 0088A3. When it arrived, I put the thermometer and probe on the table beside the AcuRite I use to monitor HVAC temperature. I gave it time to settle at room temperature. When I checked, the indoor/outdoor readings of the new one were the same, to a tenth of a degree. They were also the same, to a tenth of a degree, as the AcuRite that had been on the table. It looks as if AcuRite has great quality control. After replacing the old indoor/outdoor thermometer, I took it apart and cleaned it with contact cleaner. Now the readings are about a degree high, as when it was new, seven years ago. I guess a microscopic film had accumulated on the circuit board. I guess that could happen with any brand.

This stays on the bowl of my artisan bread dough, whether it's the leaven, the bulk rise dough, the final rise, etc...It seems like a cheap little number but here is what happened the 1st day I used it. I use my oven as a proofer. So I put the dough in the oven, lay the thermometer on the rack next to it, turned on the oven (I turn it off after a couple minutes - I just want a little warmth as my house is freezing). This particular time, I made the mistake of walking away, briefly I thought, just to do one quick thing. Yeah that's what you always think... Well, I got distracted as I KNOW I am prone to do, and of all things, ended up at my piano where I played at least TWO pieces before I began to smell something funny. What an idiot!!! I realized I'd forgotten to turn off the oven, so I raced into the kitchen, and to my dismay, found that it had gotten so hot the grey plastic casing had begun to melt. I had to take it out w/ a hotpad, and the way the screen looked and the dented melted plastic, I almost threw it right into the trash. I was so pissed. Not to mention the dough I had painstakingly caressed through the many turns of bulk fermentation. Next day, I went to throw the thermometer in the trash, and lo! the thing worked again! Temp seems accurate - both indoor and outdoor features are fine, and that was over a month ago and the little guy is kickin' along just fine. A little mishapen perhaps, but that's okay with me. After that kind of initiation, it just has to get five stars...

Works well in my truck. Contrast between the numbers and screen background as well as the size of the numbers makes the thermometer easy to read during the day without its supplemental light feature. Perhaps the light will make the thermometer readable at nite. I found the thermometer varied 1 to 1.5 degrees higher from an indoor - outdoor thermometer I’ve used for a long time and compared the Acurite against prior to installing it in the truck.

This feels cheap. The light is pathetic, it really doesn't help you much at all. The LCD display is ok when viewed straight on, and from the top and sides (clearest from the top). If u view it from below, it losses clarity. Just tested this against the temperature readings from a high end digital multimeter with an attached temperature probe, and it was about 0.5 degrees out, mostly over, sometimes under. Which isn't too bad. I placed the device and the probe together, and the 'outside' temp varied by about 0.2 -0.3 degrees from the 'inside' reading. Which shouldn't happen as they are in the same place, but can be because each thermocouple if housed differently, plus the probe is on the end of a long wire (resistance affecting the reading? not sure). The function buttons are not good: it takes some serious pressing to rotate between functions. There's a hole in the back hanging it up on walls. I got this really for the long probe length, and wasn't looking for anything fancy. For the price though I would have expected a bit better, especially from Acurite. Can't comment on durability or longevity, though given the build quality I wouldn't bet on it. I'll try to update this review in the future to comment on how it has worked out. I wouldn't recommend this product. *****UPDATE**** 1.5 years later and its dead. It hasn't been in any harsh environment whatsoever and yet after just 1.5 years its dead. Also the light is pathetic. Will say that it was more or less accurate for the time it lived. But I'm sure there are much better products that also measure properly.

This one replaced the exact same brand and model that we had for over 20 years and that I dropped on the floor. It is easy to use, read and so far, the battery life is great. It comes with a long cord to the outdoor sensor, and we run that cord under the window and hang the sensor on the wall of the house outside. The push button light is adequate for reading the display but some might want a brighter light. We are very pleased with it.

This little gadget seems to be accurate. It is about the size of a deck of cards and the cord that attaches the outdoor sensor to the display is very long and thin, so running the cord through the side of a screen and a window is no problem. I have vertical sliding windows and the cord does not impair the tight fit -- although repeated opening and closing the window might eventually wear out the cord. (I'm using a window that is seldom opened.) My only issue is that the light which is supposed to illuminate the display is very dim, but it does the job when the room is dark (assuming you can navigate your way in the dark in the first place without turning on a light or using a flashlight). This is a non-issue as far as I am concerned but might be important to someone else. I suppose the unit could be used as a dim nightlight. I have no idea how long the single AA battery lasts. Mine has been going for 6+ months.

My previous different indoor / outdoor gadget failed me twice. I like a simple machine. This one is proving easy to set up and operate with minimal fuss. Its wire doesn't mind windows and screens.

Over two (2) years ago I purchased this AcuRite Chaney Instruments Indoor/Outdoor digital thermometer on Amazon. It has been used to monitor the temperature in a hard-to-reach crawl space underneath our home. It has operated accurately and flawlessly since its date of purchase - without the need to change its original (single AAA) battery. The lengthy (10-foot) wire connecting the temperature probe to the monitor is a great feature which allows tremendous flexibility regarding its possible applications. Would I buy this product again? Yes - absolutely! If you go to the manufacturer's website, you can easily search the model number of this product and access a PDF copy of the User's Manual.

The description/images seems to imply that the sensor probe can be used in aquarium, and my need was for pool temperature and after short period of time, the sensor no longer provided accurate readings. After reading the actual instructions, it does say that sensor is "water-resistant" should be only immersed for max 30 seconds as prolonged use will cause sensor to malfunction.
