Singer HD0500S Serger Overlocker
I just purchased a Singer HD 0500S Serger Overlocker Sewing Machine. I love the fact that it has an all metal frame, can sew 1,300 stitches per minute & has 6 different stitch types. After taking it out of the box it shipped in, I began searching for the online manual. The manual wasn't much help in the way of setting the tension dials. I am somewhat mechanically inclined, so I began to follow the colored thread diagram inside the cover of the machine. The far left needle was the most difficult to thread. It took at least 30 minutes just to get the thread to go thru the needle eye. Next, I began to set the tension dials to the type of fabric I wanted to test. That was a little frustrating, but didn't take too long. Once the tension was perfect, I loved how nice & even the stitches looked. SO FAR, SO GOOD: The serger works very nicely. I haven't been sewing much since purchasing this item. But it's a great machine I would recommend to anyone.

Excited to use
Looking forward to use this! I got this to match the black HD500 machine. They look amazing together. This was tricky to get threaded, but they color coded the threading to help. When I went to register the machine, the website couldn't find it. I have set it up and it runs like a dream with the 4 thread set up. It has suction cups on the bottom, so it sticks to to the table and doesn't "walk" when serging. ONE Thing that would have made this the "chef's kiss"? To have included a long set of bent needle nose tweezers to help with threading.

Great value for price.
Great serger. Easy to thread. A little loud.

Could be better
Threading: it does not come pre-threaded but the color coding made it easy to thread all the spools. The first guide was a little confusing using the instructions but using common sense it all became clear. The provided tweezer is not the correct shape and type to assist with threading so you need to get the one with the angled tip. The housing: the plastic feels cheap and not sturdy. Time will tell as to how well it holds up. This contributes to the lighter weight. I have a serger from 30 years ago and it works just like on day one but I bought this as an option based on "heavy duty" in order to sew thicker fabrics. The presser foot: it barely lifts up. I don't know if that's how it is meant to be or if my unit is mal-assembled. The only way to know is to check the presser foot lever and that has a low profile so it is also barely "visible" when you feel for it. I haven't sewn a heavy duty project so cannot speak to how well or how thick it handles thick fabrics. Noise: it is comparable to machines this size but it could be dampened a bit if the housing was made differently. It is noticeably louder compared to my older serger, has a sharper metallic turn instead of a smooth oiled turn. Size and weight: looks small for a heavy duty but then I put it side by side with my old serger to compare and it is bigger by about 10% - 15%. It is comparable in weight so again time will tell if the motor will perform as advertised as a metal heavy duty motor ought to be heavier purely by size. Overall, I am satisfied with the unit, just wish I could be excitedly happy.

So far very happy
Have been using it for about two weeks every chance I have after work and in weekends. The instructions can be downloaded and they are easy to follow, I still followed a youtube video to make sure, because I have never used a serger, I just recently started to sew as a hobby. It has been working wonderfull, I'm very happy with this purchase. About the noise I don't think it makes much noise, but I have only the regular sewing machine to compare it with and I think they both make about as much noise, seems normal to me. I've bought multipurpose maxi lock thread and so far I have only had to thread it once. I figure so far I have had about 8 hours of efective sewing use so I will be oiling it next time I use it since I have read sergers need more maintenance than regular sewing machines.

Too hard to set up the stitches for different fabrics.
I grew up around Singer, but when started sewing bought Brother because it is cheaper, still own 2. But replacing my last Serger was an ordeal, had to return 2, one the thread from the needles tangled and the front cover broke. The second, one month after fighting to make a good loop and sew I read reviews that was a current problem for everyone, plus had an awful inside noise, so... returned as well. Will not try a Chinese Brother again. Decided to spend a little more and bought this Singer. Was amazed that it didn't come threaded and no instructions booklet, no additional pressing foots, and just a brush as accessory. Printed the instructions from internet, and checked videos for the threading. No user friendly like Brother. But this is sturdy, doesn't dance all around the table. Sits well and I can even use the lint bag. So far is sewing wonderfully and less noisy. You can tell it's "the" brand. Hope it continues all good. Just a few days so far, will update my review if something goes wrong, for now happy with my purchase. This is made in Vietnam. Update, September 30, very frustrating can't "guess" the settings, because the booklet doesn't help, is vague and doesn't sew as expected, unfortunately the return window finished. I'm losing so much time trying to make it work. 😪 June 2026. Can't work with this no more. The guessing on the stitching size and adjusts of the stitching width makes me lose too much time. I wasn't able to have a clean seam ever. Too sad, I had great expectations for singer. Even traveled 200 miles to a service shop for them to explain the adjustment settings, because the instructions manual is too poor. But after a few days changing fabrics I had to readjust and there it is, awful stitching again. I'll had to return to my previous old brand, hope they are better now.

Quieter than the Brother it replaced.
Bought to replace a Brother serger that constantly jammed and required retiming of the loopers. This Singer has a smaller footprint, is quieter, and includes a carrying handle. So far it's worked wonderfully. The only issue that we've had is that it doesn't come with a manual. You can buy a 160 something page manual in three languages for about $20, or you can download a PDF version for free and save it to your computer or phone. Additionally, you can print off whole copy or just the pages you need. If you're printing a copy you only need to print about 61 pages as the rest is in Spanish and French.

Works great but no manual
It took me just over an hour to figure out how to thread the machine. I had to use YouTube because the instructions with the machine are very limited. But it works great and I’m very happy I bought this serger.
