Do yourself a favor and avoid the cheap crap. Get these!!!
One use of these while servicing my Kubota's front axle and my old Craftsman set with removable tips went immediately in the trash. Supposedly the Craftsmen set could do ext. rings on shafts up to 2" (~51mm). Ha, right! This shaft was ~1 5/8" (~41mm) and there was no way though matter how many times I tried, no matter what tips I used or how I had them installed. I decided on this set of Knipex after reading many reviews here and elsewhere saying fixed tipped pliers are the only way to go. You know what, they're absolutely right. I enjoy mechanical work when I have the right tools, but I always felt that "snap" had more to do with how they'd fly away (assuming you even got that far) than it did to do with their springy composition. These Knipex pliers made these retainer rings trivial to remove and reinstall. I even took others out to *play* with 'em and to go a bit further with my cleanup and repair work. One of those was external on a 70mm shaft and tho this plier set has a stated upper range of 60mm, the retainer was removed easily. What may not be obvious to a casual observer who's not seen these up close is how the working bits at the tip are canted outwards for the ext. rings and inwards for the int. rings. The removable tips I had prior always canted inwards and for ext. rings this caused the ring to slide off the tips before you could open the ring up at all. I just wish I had purchased these 30 years ago. So many headaches I could have avoided. Though I would never have giggled as I'll likely do every time I use these in the future now -- 'cause I know.

Why would anyone buy such expensive pliers?
Because they work. These pliers have "precision" in the name to distinguish them from the standard product which has external springs, box joints, and turned tips. These pliers have adjustable joints, internal springs, and spring wire tips. The tips are not changeable, they are crimped in. When you wear out a pair of tips (hasn't happened to me yet), you have got your $25 worth of use, go buy another pair. The tips are canted outward on external ring pliers and inward on internal ring pliers. This is a great feature as the clip will work it's way toward the pliers when under tension and tend to stay on the pliers until tension is released. Great feature. This set will handle 3/8" (10mm) to 2 3/8" (60mm). If you are an R/C car enthusiast or a gun or airgun or paintball gunsmith, you will need a separate pair of external pliers that will handle 1/8" (3mm) to 3/8" (10mm). Thank the engineer in the sky they don't particularly make 1/8 to 3/8 Internal snap rings, but if they did, Knipex would probably make them. You may want straights Knipex 4911A0 External Straight Precision Retaining Ring Pliers 5.5-Inch or the angled ones Knipex 4921A01 External Angled Precision Retaining Ring Pliers 5.2-Inch sometimes they go out of stock, but don't hurry, buy them from Amazon as they are about $10 less expensive. Knipex also makes bigger pliers for those of us who fool with big tractors and earth movers. These are very good tools, they are drop forged steel and should last a long time doing what they were designed to do.

Wow - What a difference!!!!
I only occasionally have the need to use snap ring pliers. I bought an inexpensive system with interchangeable pliers. For the life of me I couldn't get them to work. They would squeeze the ring, but as soon as I tried to pull it out - the ring slipped off the pliers. I thought the problem was with me, or the ring. After an hour I gave up with no success. Unbelievably frustrating! I then did some research and realized it wasn't operator error, but tool quality. I read a review about these Knipex pliers - they were definitely more expensive. On my first try, they worked! Total time 2 minutes vs 60 minutes. What a difference and well worth the extra cost. I would strongly recommend them.

Work Well
Funny how the simple things can make or break a tool. I've had a few snap ring pliers with changeable jaws that are a waste of time. Jaws are way too flimsy to work. I've had the more solid pliers that you change how the handles are assembled to change from inner to outer snap rind. Those work better but the pins are not optimized for how they need to engage the snap ring, so also have issues. These Knipex pliers are made right and work well. I tried them on an item that I was having trouble with and they held and manipulated the snap ring just fine. They are pricey, but the lack of frustration makes them well worth the cost. The outside pliers are spring loaded to be open, the inside pliers are not spring loaded. It might be nice if they were loaded to close, but not a big deal. These pliers work and work well.

The best snap ring pliers set
Bar none the best snap ring pliers set for the money. Only caveat is that the tips aren't replaceable.

definitely a good buy
I own many Knipex tools, and they all make my job easier. I use them every single day. I only gave these a 4 star rating because I think there is room for improvement. If I were going to produce this tool, I would make the shoulder that the pins set into much more tapered. The extra bulk by the tips makes it extremely difficult to grab micro snap rings. (If I worked on bigger things like tractors or cars, it wouldn't be an issue.) I however work on Swiss tooling for CNC Lathes, and they are usually very small and I need tools that are built to that scale. I work in a realm of tolerances that are <.0001" and the tools are about the size of a big man's fist. When I say I need precision, I mean it. These are VERY GOOD. Very few of these snap ring pliers work for what I use them for. So, my gripes would not necessarily be yours. You can't go wrong with the quality of Knipex. My favorite pliers company for sure! Buy them! They'll pay for themselves easily and won't frustrate you using them!

Bite the Bullet, Spend the Money, and Get to Work!
This plier set is what I should have bought before buying the junk sets in the past. I'm not in a professional field of repair but do need a reliable set of pliers primarily for snowmobile bogey wheel bearing replacement and these worked GREAT! Most guys hate to spend money on tools especially when they only use them once in a while. The problem I found is I've probably spent this much ($150-ish) over the last few years trying to find a nice match between reliability and affordability for a snap ring plier. This set has it all, the shorter and the taller pliers, the straight and 90 degree ends with no switching out ends for this or that project... just grab the select pair and know that they will work... typical German engineering. I'm not saying that they will never break, but I'm certain it will take a BIG project to find out. I broke 2 sets of China made pliers on 8 bearings this season... sigh. I should have these for a LONG TIME to come. Guys... bite the bullet, spend the money, and get to work... you will be very pleased and have a peaceful conscience knowing it is money well spent.

If you want to stop fussing with circlips and just take them on and off, then buy these.
These are expensive - but they work. Experience tells me that snap rings come off one of two ways: easily or miserably. I've struggled mightily over the years using K&D replaceable-tip circlip pliers - they've always worked, eventually. Recently I had a large circlip that fought me for days. The K&Ds didn't go big enough so I bought a purportedly better pair - were better, but they didn't do the job either. At the edge of my rope I opened my wallet to Knipex; they arrived and all at once it was over - they just worked. Now, what had I been doing when this obstacle reared it's head? Oh yeah... Life is too short to fight with things you really don't need to - if you want to put the snap ring wars to rest forever just get out your wallet and buy these. You'll smile every time you use them. I sure do.
