Tekpower 8-Function 19-Range Analog Multimeter, YX360-TRE-B

I knew this was bigger than the ones from the auto parts stores, but it was a little bigger than I expected. This is fine, because my eyes are getting old and this is very easy to read. It is accurate according to my digital meters measuring the same circuits. It's a classic, albeit big, analog multi-meter. It's great for its niche, and cheap to boot. And yes, I do own dial calipers as well as a digital.

I used this to retrieve diagnostic codes off of a 1992 F150 5.0l. Truck was running rough/power issues. Pre-OBD2 system so couldn't use regular vehicle scan tool on it. Check engine light was not working so couldn't just count flashes of bulb for codes. By connecting jumper wire in test port and this analog multimeter between test port and battery, I successfully retrieved a code for throttle position sensor. Replacing the sensor and connectors fixed the problem.

If I had one of these when I was younger I would have been a very happy electronic hobbyist. We all know that there are times when a digital meter just won't do the job & you need an analog meter. In fact I have found 'that I should always double check most all measurements with an analog multimeter. All too often, the analog meter will provide me with a hint of a nagging problem that the digital one will just ignore. Anyway, for $16, this meter will give you a heads up to conditions you need to know. My first Radio Shack multimeter set me back just over a hundred dollars with tax. Now I can be very picky, and would point out that this meter is constructed very cheaply (what else should I expect?). And if dropped, just sweep it up and place in the rubbish can. So this one is worth the effort to protect and be careful with. Also note that it requires 3 batteries, one 9V and 2 AA cells which requires that the back be opened and carefully closed to install/replace. The batteries will likely last most people years and years, so make sure to label when to change batteries on the outside of the case to avoid the dreaded leakage issues down the road. The most often negative remark of mine on cheap meters is the rotary switch condition. This one has a nice feel with definite detents. The meter itself is large, with a mirrored scale that is easy to read and the supplied test leads are OK (w/right angle plugs) for everyday use. If you don't appreciate the mirror behind the needle (many people don't these days), try carefully reading the meter while moving your head from side to side. I would also comment that the dampening of the meter movement seems to be just about right. There is a stand tab in the back which supports the meter at a good angle for use. It's also worth mentioning that the continuity buzzer is quickly responsive with no real delay. So the remaining issue for any type of meter is ACCURACY. This one is no better or worse than most others. But after careful zero adjustment (the screw at the center bottom of most analog meters needs to be adjusted at the angle you most often use it at/in. Careful use should result in accuracy around 1-2% of scale, about all one can really expect with this type of multimeter. If you need better, also invest in a good digital meter. But I spent most of my life with this type of meter, I used them daily, and did just fine. Finally, I purchased this meter just to see what one gets for $16, and fully intended to return it. But I'm impressed and decided to keep it as a spare analog meter (and to loan out when needed). Remember NEVER, N-E-V-E-R E-V-E-R loan your good (expensive) meter out to ANYONE for any reason.

You always need and analog meter in your tool kit. Digital meters are great but are not fast enough to see quick changes. The meter works great and is very accurate for the price.

This was a replacement for a previous returned item. So happy the first meter was not made correctly. This meter was twice as large as first one. Easier TO READ. Better battery installation process. Works fantastically.

I wanted an analog tester because I'm working with an antique radio and I needed to get exact readings that the digital ones didn't provide. This one was awesome. I would highly recommend this to anybody. Is it a professional model? Absolutely not, but it is more than enough for the average person.

It will take a while before I can really say how well it works. So far my only complaint is OFF should be at top. So turning the unit off is not intuitive and requires a looksee. If the meter was used daily this would probably not be a problem, but for seldom use this will take getting use to.

I much prefer these older ‘dial’ display over the digital. Just seem more reliable and ‘real’, but that’s just me! Unit works well, but be careful when measuring amperage - a misstep can blow the 0.5 amp fuse inside.

Decent Volt-Ohm-Multimeters are getting hard to find. This Tekpower VOM is good value for the price. My only complaint with it is that when in the OFF position, the meter movement isn't shorted - which would restrict the needle's movement and ensuring no damage while shipping.
