Will a Nalgene bottle fit in one of the side pockets?

Yes the side pockets are for water bottles. GO TO THEIR WEBSITE it says so.There's even a picture right there of one in it. Hell, when you search for products (backpacks) on the site there's a checkbox for water bottles. This one comes up. DO your research people, this is getting pathetic now. You can fit a standard 16 fl oz water bottle. This is even the newer version of the one I have, and mine fits one. Maybe if you guys tried other bottles and went somewhere besides two blocks from your house or car you would know.

Can it fit a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 in the tablet compartment?

Yes the Surface pro should fit. However, it may be a bit small. My opinion would be to have a sleave over it inside the bag.
