How big of a water bottle can it hold?

The pocket is 6 inches deep I have put the tall smart water bottles in it without them falling out while responding to this I decided to see if a yeti 32 oz tumbler tipped upside down would fit (bigger side in first just to see) it fit no problem and was plenty secure.

Will this fit under the seat in front of me on an airplane?

Absolutely! I travel all the time with this backpack and fits nicely under the seat in front of me.

How sturdy is handle? Can it be suspended from hook without tear?

The handle has a aluminum cable like.. Wrapped with a thick clear plastic.. To add the handle is also wapped with cushion two handle in one it also has metal in caps that tacked down and sowed down really well.. That the first thing I looked at.. It also has a hook on the back that could be used for hanging.. I'm quite sure it will meet your needs😃
